Pensacolas first daily paper Volk and to this friendship he attributes the position he has achieved In the world of art The extra heroic figure on which Mr Yolk Is now engaged represents the Senator just on the brink of addressing an open air audience His light overcoat Is thrown open his right hand rests easily and gracefully in the lappel of the undercoat and in the left is a scroll The head Is firmly poised The right foot is thrown forward a little and he stands facing his constituents apparently waiting until the applause with which he has been received shall subside Firmness Immovable the dignity of a man who thoroughly knows his position and what is expected of him and a wealth of reserved force are expressed in the clear unflinching eyes slightly compressed lips and solid outside The features are cleuricut and the face barren of hirsute appendage finds a bold relief in contrast with a luxurious head of hair Judged from a purely artistic standpoint there Is a rigidity about the the drapery which Is however inherent in the modern style of dress There are no graceful folds such as are seen In the statues of the antique and indeed in tho nature of things such would be completely out of place Stephen Av Douglas in the garb of a Roman Senator I would be an anachronism Those who knew the Little Giant would not recognize him in the toga of eighteen centuries ago Mr Volk has done his best to overcome this inartistic feeling in the drapery and where he fails to completely please the fault should not bo laid at his door The modern tailor Is the deadly foe of art Chicago Tribune It is with gratification that the Southern people find that the memory of Douglas Is to be perpetuated in enduring marble and speaking bronze Years ago the people of the great Northwest irrespective of politics resolved to rear to the memories of the ablest statesman of this century Lincoln and Douglas monuments commemorative of their characters patriotism and public worth That of Lincoln rears Its magnificent columns oer his last resting place at his old home at Springfield where the president rests from the longdrawn agony of his official career covered with honor and glory at the hands both of those with whom he was at peace and those from whom he differed With malice towards none and with charity for all arc fell asleep to have that perfect repose In the grave that he never enjoyed in official life That of Douglas rears its pedestal abovo the waters qf Lake Michigan like a gigantic sentinel or mighty watchtower As the gazer views It he is taken hack almost a score of years to the deathbed of tho statesman and his dying words are vividly recalled Tell my children to stand by the Union The Union must and shall be maintained at all hazards Years ago the nation In sorrow laid him down DAILY ECHO 1 Published Every Evening Except Sunday TERMS 10 PER ANNUM JOHN McALEESE City Editor PENSACOLA FEBRUARY 1878 to rest For years turmoil and trouble fell to the lot of that country to which he was devoted The Great Lake tossed and murmured as its billows lapped the shore where he unmindful of nil but peace lay In his glory Now as then his prophetic words ring In our ears and we request that I should represent the port of Pensacola at the Export Convention which convenes at Washington on tho 19th inst has received my careful attention It would afford me great pleasure to comply with your very complimentary and gratifying call but the press of business renders it Impossible for me to be absent at this time and I lose no time after reaching this conclusion In advising you of the fact that you may have sufficient time to name another representative My faith in Pensacolas future is very great and 1 think It very important that our citys unequalled advantages should be placed before this meeting Pensacolas exports for the current year already cleared and now loading excluding timber Is over 33 per cent in value of the entire exports of the last fiscal year I believe it is only necessary to let our facilities be known to increase our export trade steadily and rapidly With thanks for your kind expressions I remain Yours very truly VD CHIPLEY We regret to learn that Capt Chipley Is forced to decline the proffered honor through force of business as we felt assured that Pensacolas interests would have been well cared for by him We trust however that Pensacola will not be unrepresented at the convention Careless Use of Firearms Last evening between the hours of eight and nine oclock quite a large number of boys had congregated in front of the drug store of Dr Clark on Palafox I street and one of their number a young boy Francis Castello by name had in his posses Ion a pistol and while in the actor examining it it fell from his hands to the sidewalk nd went off the contents being lodged In the leg of the young son of Deputy Marshal Joseph Commyns The unfortunate boy was taken to his home and medical aid summoned The wound is not serious the I ball having entered the fleshy part of the leg below the knee This is the second accident of tho kind that has resulted from the careless use of firearms in the I hands of young boys In a very short space of time and while neither have resulted fatally these frequent accidents I the result of carrying concealed weapons should remind our police authorities that active steps should bo taken in this matter and this dangerous practice be done away with The carrying of concealed weopans is contrary to the letter and spirit of the statute and with our cosmopolitan population it behoves our police to be vigilant and our magistrates should mingle but little mercy in he justice meted out to those coming before them charged with carrying concealed weapons 9tPWmr 1 2 ro joot I OI tho tA a
