BLAZING HOUSE DRAMA Uncle Throws Nephew To Safety A two-year-old boy was saved from a blazing house in Carrickfergus, co. Antrim, last night, by a man who climbed a spouting and threw him out of a window into the arms of another man. The boy, Robert Clawson, of Ellis-street, was in bed in the house alone, and he was rescued by his uncle, Harry Clawson. Well-road, which opens to-morrow, has a very pleasing appearance both in its exterior and interior. The interior, especially, compels admiration. The walls are finished in a warm colour and the decorative features have been carried out in graceful curves spreading from the proscenium opening. The ornamental grills flanking the small stage are very artistic. The whole of the lighting is concealed, and is but one of instances in which careful consideration has been given to the comfort of patrons.

The seating, carried out in terra-cotta crushed velvet, is practically of one quality throughout. The accommodation is 1,666, the stalls seating 1,122 and the balcony 544. A novel feature is the treatment of the walls to prevent reverberation. The rear wall of the balcony is fluted, and, together with the side walls in front of the balcony, is faced with acoustic with the object of securing perfect sound reproduction. CAVENDISH CINEMA ST.

ANN'S WELL ROAD, NOTTINGHAM TWO FEATURES. Careful attention has been given to the heating and ventilation. The extractor grills in the ceiling blend harmoniously with the decoration, and warm air vents have been fitted to the front of the stage. The heating apparatus is automatically controlled by thermostats placed in the auditorium and entrance hall, ensuring an even temperature throughout. A secondary electric lighting system from batteries has been provided, so that, in the event of a power failure, there is ample illumination.

Designed by Messrs. Browning and Hayes, architects, of Derby, and erected by Mr. A. Hodgkinson, of Derby, the cinema is constructed of steel, brick, and concrete, and is absolutely fireproof. The Burton Constructional Engineering of Burton-on- Trent, were responsible for the steelwork, and Mr.

L. V. Pannell, of 95, Talbot-street, Nottingham, executed the Neon installation. The front elevation is of sandstock bricks, with a central feature of stone which carries the name sign in Neon lighting. The entrance foyer provides comfortable waiting accommodation, whilst the balcony lounge is a particularly spacious apartment.

Western Electric microphonic sound system and Kalee projectors have been installed. The opening fiJm is the Will Hay comedy, Convict and two artists appearing in the film, Garry Marsh and Googie Withers, will be present at the opening ceremony, which will be performed by the Deputy Lady Mayoress, Miss Sylvia Hooley. Mr. A. H.

L. Shapeero and Mr. A. Hodgkinson. The manager is Mr.

MOVES IN HOSIERY TRADE DISPUTE. NOTTINGHAM CONFERENCE. MINISTRY OFFICIAL AND UNION SECRETARIES. There was a talk which lasted for 2g hours in Nottingham yesterday, between hosiery trade union officials and Air. George Ryder, chief conciliation officer of the Ministry of Labour for the Midlands.

It concerned the demand by the federation for cuts by commencing with a penny reduction on January Ist, in the existing bonus of 6d. in the shilling. The secretaries of seven unions were present. The trade union officials stated what they thought was wrong with existing conditions, made suggestions for avoiding a strike in the New Year, and gave their views concerning the future of the hosiery industry. Mr.

Ryder promised to get into touch with the federation as soon as possible, and put before that organisation the views expressed that afternoon. He hopes to be able to arrange for a joint meeting between the federation and officials of the unions. QUESTION OF OVERTIME. Operatives employed by the Nottingham Hosiery Manufacturing Company, at Loughborough, it was stated yesterday, have handed in their notices. About 300 are affected, and the notices will take effect at the end of this week.

The action the employees is stated to be connected with the decision of the company to discontinue payment for overtime. Mr J. Newbould, secretary of the Loughborourrh Hosiery Union, declined to make any statement. A lightning strike occurred at the factory last week following the dismissal of a girl employee. We must not forget that had not these old age pensioners worked so hard we should not have had the conditions in the factories and workshops we have to-day. It was through their efforts that things changed, and we should try and get them some sort of compensation in return for their labours. I am willing to give two nights in the week for this cause, and if there is anyone else who would like to come along they will find me ready to get some sort of an association into being. If there are means of getting better conditions for these old persons we would benefit in the end as none of us is getting younger. May I say that since my last letter had quite thirty letters from different parts of the city.

Some of these are living under very great hardships, an dit is a pity when we are known as the richest country in the world. I. B. RODGERS. 50 Gregory-street, Lenton.

Nottm. Forest F.C. As one who suffered at Barnsley last May, and who definitely does not desire a similar experience, may I appeal to the Forest committee to bring back immediately to the first team Trim and Hindley. Weakness in the right-back and centre-forward positions, particularly the latter, cost Forest a point last Saturday. Hindley is one of the most promising young players I have seen for years.

Any lack of ball control which he may at the moment possess is more than made up for by his amazing speed and enthusiasm. His goal scoring record in the Midland League should be an eloquent enough testimony of his shooting powers. Speed and drive are badly needed by the Reds this position. Give this young man an extended just one I prophesy he will be a money spinner before many weeks are past In conclusion congratulations to the team as a whole, and Surtees and Clarke in particular, for the great entertainment they gave us last Saturday. PLAY HINDLEY.
