REVIEW 'Love Letters' is real life By BERNA CLAIRE For Journal When a hard-boiled theater reviewer goes through three Kleenexes after a show, then continues to be misty-eyed for the next two hours, you can be certain she saw a tremendously powerful production.

What activated this writer's water works was Mendocino Theater Company's "Love Letters," currently in repertory with "Independence." Don't get me wrong. "Love Letters" isn't sentimental slop. It's simply the life stories of Andrew Makepeace Ladd and Melissa Gardner, as revealed through their correspondence. They begin writing each other notes when they're in second grade, and they continue sorry, you'll have to see the production to find out when the letters stop. We leave "Love Letters" with a deep sense of beauty, understanding of the human condition, and intimate knowledge of Andy and Melissa.

Their lifetime of opening to each other has broken down our own ego defenses and walls. As we watched actors Susan Maeder and Doug Warner (the first of a rotating groups of actors) grow from childhood to late middle age, we weren't aware of any acting. Parts of A.R. Gurney's script may have been autobiographical, because he included details about Connecticut and New York which would have been unknown to anyone who hadn't actually lived there. Director Ayn Ruymen is doing something bold and innovative.

She has chosen four separate casts for "Love Letters." She explained that changing casts not only gives more people an opportunity to perform, but also gives various acting partners a chance to discover how they connect and the nature of their individual powers. Lyn Honzel and Ron Atwood will be Melissa and Andy Aug. 16, 17, 18; Ruby Bell and Jim Hay Aug. Monica Landry and Lee Edmundson Aug. 30 and 31.

Performances are held at the Schoeni Theater of the Mendocino Art Center at 8 p.m. Tickets are $9. For more information call (707) 937.4477. Brewery sees in 10 with auction, dancers, fun The Mendocino Brewing Company will be celebrating 10 years of brewing in Hopland this weekend. Among the activities will be a performance by the famed Morris Dancers, whose traditional barley fertility dance and ale blessing is a thing of beauty.

The dancers will perform from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the brewery on Highway 101. An auction is scheduled for 3 p.m. to raise funds for local charities. Items to be auctioned include 12 framed posters by the painter William Wiley, each signed by the artist; several collector's items including a rare wooden beer case from the defunct New Albion Brewery; two 9-liter bottles of the Eye of the Hawk Select Ale; a "history of Red Tail Ale," professionally matted and framed; and two cases of commemorative Red Tail Ale magnums.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Hopland Volunteer Fire Department and the Ukiah chapter of the American Red Cross. The Morris Dancers will be performing at the Mendocino Brewing Company Saturday. Elvis featured in radio show Well known airwave personality Chuck Savage will team up with KUKI Radio to bring local listeners four solid hours of rock 'n' roll music by Elvis Aaron Presley. The 7th Annual Tribute to the King will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sunday with Savage at the controls. "This time around we're going to have more music and fewer interviews," said Savage, who also promised to honor song requests submitted in time for him to find the desired recording. "If someone makes a legitimate request for a song that's out there and I don't find it, I'll eat their hat," Savage said. The Elvis tribute will feature songs from throughout his three-decade career and will include some rare and unreleased material including a never-released recording of "One Night of Sin," recorded in the early 60s. The radio broadcast can be heard on 103.3 FM in Mendocino County, 97.1 FM in Lake County, and on 1400 AM.

Requests can be made by calling 463-5868 or 463-KUKI.
