B4 THE CHILLIWACK PROGRESS, Wednesday, April 28, 1993 Ottawa adopts Aging Together The Minister of State for Seniors, Monique Vezina, announced recently that the federal government will provide $170 million over the next five years to continue the Seniors Strategy. Combined with funds already allocated to New Horizons and the National Advisory Council on Again, a total of $234 million will now be available through this strategy to enhance the independence and the quality of life for seniors. "Seniors are of growing importance to our society," stated Vezina. "This strategy is intended, not only to recognize the role of seniors, but also to remove barriers that prevent them from remaining active and independent members of our society." Highlights of the renewed strategy include $149 million in community funding for the following initiatives: New Horizons Program to provide community-based services to the more isolated, at-risk seniors; Seniors Independence Program to support the development of innovative models of community service, program delivery, seniors leadership and skill-building programs and training of professionals; and the newly created Ventures in Independence element which will link seniors in new partnerships with business, labor and other levels of government through joint ventures to address aging-related issues. In recognition of these changes, the Seniors Strategy will also developo a comprehensive agenda for action on issues of importance to seniors and an aging society in the 1990s and beyond.

"We must not only address the issues facing seniors today, but also prepare for the challenges and opportunities which will be faced by tomorrow's seniors," continued Vezina. "That is why I am pleased to announce that under "Aging Together" we will develop a plan to deal with these issues as part of a new Federal Policy. on Aging." IP HENDERSON'S FUNERAL HOMES LTD. I "People Helping People" 45901 VICTORIA CHILLIWACK 792-1344 HOPE AGASSIZ ZENITH 7255 in 1990, becomes the 11th bridge player in Chilliwack to hold the rank of ACBL Life Master. Three other Chilliwack players achieved success at the Vancouver Island tournament. Jim Groves and Jim Sache, playing with Gary Skoropada of Maple Ridge and Brad Fletcher of Mission, reached the quarter-finals of the Flight Knockout Teams, while David Schmidt, playing with Marian Zarychta of Garibaldi Highlands, Alan Harrop of Vancouver and Nancy Bass of Seattle tied for fourth in the Flight Swiss Teams. All four players are members of the Chilliwack Duplicate Bridge Club, which meets in the Senior Recreation Centre at College and Victoria at 7:30 p.m.

each Monday night. The club has grown substantially over the past year, as many new players discover the joys of duplicate bridge. New players are always welcome, with our without a partner. For further information on the local club, call Schmidt at 795-5141 or club director Bob Percher at 792-4389. Lois Mazuren of Sardis took advantage of the 1993 Vancouver Island Tournament, held in Victoria April 13-18, to become this area's newest bridge Life Master.

To achieve the ranking, a player must consistently place well in local and tournament bridge games sponsored by the American Contract Bridge League. Mazuren earned the final points she needed by placing first and second overall in two successive side games at the tournament. In both cases, she was partnered by Flora Tereposky of Maple Ridge. Mazuren, a gerontological nurse practitioner, is the director of care at Valleyhaven Guest Home. Although she learned bridge from her parents as a teenager, she only began playing duplicate bridge about eight years ago.

Hers was an auspicious debut, as she won the first duplicate contest she entered, and has steadily progressed through the bridge ranks ever since. Prayer Service If you have trouble swallowing tablets, crushing them isn't always the answer. Some tablets are specially designed to release medication slowly over 8-10 hours. If these "timed-release" tablets are crushed, too much medication is released all at once which could cause side effects. Women who enjoy sitting in hot-tubs and saunas should avoid these activities early in pregnancy. High heat exposure very early in pregnancy is associated with nervous system birth defects.

People on low salt diets often choose flavored peppers to spice up their food. Watch those labels, though, because often salt is listed in the top four ingredients of these products. Stopping medication because you're feeling better, can be a bad decision. For example, stopping antibiotics too early could result in the infection returning. Stopping a blood pressure medication can result in high blood pressure.
