jolification in Salt Lake City on last Saturday night which by the way was generally spoken of as the brightest and most readable report published the prominent Republicans or in other words some of our most prominent citizens determined something of the kind should also happen in Provoand when such men make up their minds to do a thing they generally do it as the celebration on Thursday night proves conclusively At about 6 3D pm the Silver Bind met in front of Smoot Richards Cos drug store and while they played one tUle over fifty Republicans gathered I at that point then a large bonfire was lit a half block west in the middle of CentFe Street which was at once surrounded by a large crowd of bOJ and girls too as soon as the torches were Ht and all ready a procession wato ned on the sidewalk leading west Then Marshal Sutherland gave the order and the procession marched west on the sidewalk six blocks and returned to Hines corner and from there to the Theatre The night was dark and cloudy and the procession though rot large made a brilliant display with over forty torches and a fine show of Roman candles as they marched along 10 the tune of Shermans March to the Sea As the procession returned the bonfire went out in a blaze of red light with 465 boys around yelling liKe ConfeJerate veterans The Theatre was beautifully decorated with flags and pictures A lifesize portrait of the Preside ateUct was in front of the speakers table I and over the stage some mottoes i too Another was Protection for LaborHarrison and Morton The house was pretty well tilled and quite a large number were seated on the stage Georee Sutherland called the house to order at 7 3J and after a short humorous speech introduced as the principal speaker the HON A SAXEY late of Kansas Mr Saxey said I A short time after the Chicago convention I stated here we had come out to ratify the nomination of the men who after the 3d of March next will be the President and VicePresident of the united States I am proud of the fact that when a young man the first vote I ever cast was for Abraham Lincoln and since that time I have voted for every Republican President that has been elected heretofore I am proud to be a Republican and prouder still to be an American citizen and I am proud for another reason which it may be the people of Utah know little about and may not understand the situation in all its departments The Republican Party propose not to oppress any religion or sect but to protect all in their rights and I am glad I do not stand on the Democratic platform The young Democrats of Utah have had a good deal to say about the bloody shirt issue The Democrats ought not to say anything about the bloody shirt Then Mr Saxey told a story of a Democrat who had at one time said Jeff Davis and not Abraham Lincoln shall yet rank as President and his everlasting praise be sung while time shall last or immortality endure Mr Baxey also told of another Democrat who was commissary of Libby Prison and starved Union soldiers to death Then the speaker became eloquent and said Such men should be relegated to the rear and by the grace of God in future they will be The Young Demoorats of Utah have been fighting at long range Then Mr Casady was criticised as also was President Cleveland In one case it seems the President vetoed a pension to an old lady on the ground that the old ladyahusband had not died from the effects of wounds received in the war After reading the papers in the case which showed there was no law to justify a pension in her case Mr gaxey argued there should be a law to pension an old woman who had given her sons her husband and all for the country The people will now take care of the soldiers and their dependent relatives and the mother who has given her sons to the country may be given a small pension of 14 a month in her old age In conclusion I want to say that while I criticise some I do not condemn all Democrats It is the birthright of an American citizen to criticise others as they criticise us and have a right to To the young men of Utah I say come forth take a position and abide by it The darkness which seems to surround you will vanish and Utah will then become what she should and what I believe she soon will beone of the brightest stars iu the galaxy of States REED SMOOT said he was a Republican because he thought protection against foreign labor bestfor the country The Democrats have claimed the tariff was a tax but the people of the United States have said by their votes the tariff is not a tax He advised young men to study the question and thought when they understood it they would all be Republicans The chair then introduced CLINTON of Nephi as a wool man who knew more about growing wool than the sheep knew themselves Mr Clinton read from manuscript as he said he had written his speech so he could hereafter tell what he said DOCTOR SIMMONS was not prepared to speak and had not the inspiration but as was customary he would bear his testimony He felt like congratulating the people that we have protection in the United States and can now snap our fingers at England He thought the bloody shirt tally as honorable as the red bandana and that it would be many years before the Democrats again came into power THE REV JEFFREYS of the Church said he believed at the end of another four years the Democrats themselves will ratify the actions of General Harrison He felt not to exult over the Democrats but did feel to exult over the great principle established Within the last four years his heart had ached for the soldiers The rev stamp orator made a very sensational address of ten minutes and concluded by again declaring he felt glad on account of this great Republican victory Tne chairman announced there would be a grand Republican rally ar Jjpbf fareratds on Tuesday next with half fare rat by railroad A call was made for all Republicans to arise and give three cheers for Harrison and Morton About one quarter of the audience arose and cheered At 9 oclock the meeting adjournedB I AMOSEMICNTS As You LIKE Shakespeares immortal comedy has received some notable presentations in Salt Lake Mod jeska and Mary Anderson being among the most notable of our later Rosalinds The large audience which came out last night to see the JamesWainwright company essay the comely found in the charming lady star a Rosalind that startled and challenged their attention from the cDmmence ment and left them at tae close pronouncing the judgment thitshe came np her rendition to either of her distinguished sisters and in some respects threw both just a little way into the shade She was most charming in her love scene with Orlando and her attempt to brace up under the news of his wounding brought a thunderous recall her recitation of the epilogue was perfect and here too she was rewarded with salvos of applause Wall knew Miss Wainwright was a sweet and sympathetic
