Victress the Running Race As anticipated the race on Thursday drew a large crowd The day Rain was a most unpromising one fell about 4 oclock in the morning and clouds kept lowering long until noon when quite a heavy hail storm lasting a few minutes occurred The effect was to make the track very bad in places and the appearances were that it might storm at any moment Nothwithstanding this however a crowd began to assemble and by 230 oclock there was a very large attendance Attempts to sell pools found very little response there being no apparent disposition to bet In some pools I Bickford sold as first choice and in others Ewing took the lead About 230 Bickford was brought on the track and warmed up but there being no appearance of Ewing he was allowed to cool down The time for the commencement of the race had long past aDd still Ewing did not come up The crowd grew restless and it was reported that the backers of Ewing were endeavoring to have the race put off However at 32C oclock he came on the track and after being warmed up the horses were called to the score Bickford1 was given the inside track and when a start after several attempts was secured Bickford shot ahead Ewing broke on the out turn paced and had to be whipped into a run and then brought into a trot It was almost a foregone conclusion that Bickford would win but he broke and the bay came in ahead in 235 In the second heat Bickford had the outside but on the out turn darted in and took the pole away from Ewing lIe kept the lead for a half mile but when passing the stand ort the half mile broke i He was brought down to a square I gait and againmade it warm for the bay but getting off his feat once more Ewing took the lead passing under the wire In 24H94 The third heat it was generally assumed would be taken by Ewing without any difficulty but Bick ford again came to the front took away the pole and took the heat also Ewing breaking just before he reached the wire and the yellow stepped in ahead Time 2374 It was now thought that Bcjj ford might go in and take two straight heats He got a good sendoff and took the lead maintaining it the whole way until the homestretch was reached when Ewing crowded him gaining on him until within about two rods of the wire Ewing was then almost if not even when Bickford went off his feet and passed tinder the wire ahead on the jump The greatest anxiety was manifested by all as to what the decision would be Many of the crowd believed that heat would be declared a dead one or else given to the yellow horse The judges discussed the matter for sometime and it was finally decided that Ewing was entitled to the heat and declared winner of the race and money A few shouted with approval but many looked disappointed and some expressed the utmost dissatisfaction and disgust As the day wore on became quite pleasant and the track improving in condition The horses entered in the running race were called up to go between the keats of the trotting race The animals entered were Victress Sagebrush Tough and another Victress was the favorite and won the race in two straight heats By mistake of the orders the animals went around one heat after they had been called back making in reality three heats in each of which Victress came in considerably ahead Those who had made bets on fast time on the trotting race were sadly left and not a little set back Every effort had been made to get the track in good condition and it was rolled and harrowed and but for a couple of wet places was in moderate condition Last night there was a great deal of talk in all sporting circles over the event the delay in bringing Ewing on the track coming in for a share of criticism It is said that the race was to be trotted under the rules of the association here while those nterested in the winning horse cMm that they could trot at 12 at night but were not under the rules of the association The latter can hardly be the case as there must have been some rules and those of the association here undoubtedly be applied unless otherwise provided because the trotting was done on the track and the A managed the advertising took in the gate money and fixed the track This being the case the race should have commenced at 2 pm as the rules state that unless another time be set all races shall begin at 2 oclock pm and no racmgfcan take place when it is so dark the judges cannot tell the gait of the animals The decision which gave the race to Ewing is severely condemned Those who won on the bay of course are satisfied but some claiming to be disinterested hold that the giving of the fourth heat to Ewing was at least a most unfortunate error There is no question that Bick ford was ahead some say half a length and others a neck and more that Lewis was doing all he could to bring the horse to his feet and that tie had hardly passed under the wire before he struck his feet again The rule is that the horse has the same rights when he breaks under the wire as he has anywhere else and he could only be set back as much as he gained In view of the fact that he eame under the wire first it is held that Bickford should have been given the heator itshoU have been called a dead heat Mr Car rington one of the judges held this way but Dr Williamson and Mr Roberts held the reverse alid it was so decided The decision may have been perfectly correct The HERALD is no sporting authority and merely gives the sentiments of others expressed on the street last night and this because the interest in the race seems to be so general Those who backed the proper horse are satisfied and have little to say whether the decision was right or wrong Lady Beautifiers Ladies you cannot make fair skin rosy cheeks and sparkling eyes with all
