'MMM DAItTNfWS, ttlfi Year Mawday, Jan. CALL ME Couples write own marriage contract By AUDREY GELLIS Copley News Service Are feminists riage? Quite the contrary. Feminists oppose the type of marriage where the wife is an extension of her husband's identity, but are working to develop new marriage styles based on mutual sharing and caring. To this latter end, many couples are writing their own marriage vows and-or contracts. A marriage contract is not legally valid if its provisions run counter to state marriage laws, but working out the contract helps to crystallize what the marriage means to the two parties.

Here is the beautiful and sensible marriage contract between Lois Galgay Reckitt and David Alan Silverbrand as printed in Pennsylvania NOW (Vol. 2, No. 5) and my thanks to the St. Louis, Mo, chapter of NOW for reprinting it in their newsletter and bringing it to my attention. The contract reads as follows: "Because we believe that marriage is a private decision between participants and not the definition of either of our existences, we agree to retain the names Lois Galgay Reckitt and David Alan Silverbrand and to use the titles Ms.

and Mr. respectively. "But because to use the terms 'husband' and 'wife' connote not ownership but mutual love and fidelity, we wish to use those terms to describe our relationship. "Because we feel that with the passage of time our attitudes towards bearing or rearing of children may change, we will rediscuss this area of our lives at such time as we may decide to enlarge our family. If by chance rather than choice, Lois should become pregnant, whether to terminate that pregnancy shall be a 'decision reached by her after careful discussion with David.

And because David believes in the absolute right of a woman to choose whether to bear a child, David agrees to abide by Lois' decision. "Because we feel that neither interior or exterior tasks are inherently the responsibility of either of us, we agree to share those responsi- bilites in a loosely defined fashion. We do, however, reserve the right to make this provision specific should the need arise at any future time. "Because we feel it is important that each of us feel she-he is contributing his-her fair financial share we commit to a 50-50 sharing of household expenses. "But, because we recognize that women are frequently shortchanged financially in wages, if David should at any time earn a disproportionately high income in relation to that of Lois (or vice versa) we commit to a sharing of expenses based proportionately on income.

"Because we feel that 'a room of one's own' is a basic psychological need, we will, insofar as is possible, provide this for both of us." And here are Lois' and David's marriage vows: David; Lois and I love and respect each other very much. In a very real sense, we have been married to each other for a long time, married to the same hopes and ideals and fears. We both believe in each other as a human being with personal wants and needs that should never be diminished unnecessarily for the sake of the other. Lois: Because we believe that marriage is a private decision between us and not the definition of our existences, we agree to retain the names Lois Galgay Reckitt and David Alan Silverbrand. But because we believe we are infinitely happier together than we would be apart and because we feel that they con- NIWHQMfS Houses With Everything Top 0' Texas Builders, Inc.

Office Jehn R. Conlin 669-3542 665-5879 note not owfiefship but mutual love and fidelity we wish to be mown as husband and wife. David: We believe that what we have is greater than the material things that round us. Ours is a partnership born in love, not in social demand nor in quest for terial gain. Our children, should we decide to bear or rear them, will be extensions of our love.

Lois: Our love is strong enough to weather the things which can divide. I will care for David and he for me no matter what may happen, David: I know you and I love you and I commit myself to you and I will try to do you no harm. (From "Liberated Lois: I know you and I love you and I commit myself to you and I will try to do you no harm. DEFINE VALUES UNIVERSITY PARK. Pa.iUPIi John W.

Oswald, president of Penn State University, says American universities have not defined strong stands on values, morals and ethical judgments. "Tn these recent days of national anguish, we in education need to reexamine the aloftness we sometimes maintained toward explicit reference to values and morality," Oswald said. "We are sorrowfully aware that men of great influence and rsponsibility have confessed to varying degrees of crimes and misdemeanors, and we are deeply chagrined that each has been trained at an American institution of higher education." Tourists whd take the sightseeing cruise of Biscayne Bay would do well to heed that advice. Some of the young water skiefs delibefately cut in close to the boat, sending an avalanche of water through the large open windows. Unsuspecting passengers are caught off guard and drenched. Camera buffs and those with binoculars should be especially alert. According to Capt.

M. V. Rogers of the Island Queen, the incidents are frequent, but the Coast Guard can be notified only if the number of the speed boat towing the skier is noted.
