services were opened by the choir singing the hymn beginning 0 God thou great thou goed thou wise Eternal is thy name I Tney power bath reared the lefty ekies And built creations frame I Prayer by rresiuent A 11 cannon The choir sang the hymn commencing dow dark and gloomy was tbe night When a tan did bis powers array Agnintt the Prince of life and light And Judas did biB Lord betray ELDER TB LEWI addressed the congregation He said the congregation was made up of people who camesome to worship God others out of curiosity and still others from force of habit and bethought it was possible for all to be bene fitted no matter for what purpose they were here The house had been built by the servants of God for his worship and was a sacred place hence a good place to be in phI great majority of those present were here to worship God in sin cciiiy He had often found some of that class weary of the meetings complaining that there was monotony and sameness in the preaching and exercises In a majority of instances those who complain most of the food were dyspeptics The man with a good appetite did not find fault with the food no matter if it were of the same kind set before him daily for months lie realized that it was good for his system So is it with the spiritual nature If one came here with a desire or thought lor something that would stimulate the soul he would be satisfied with what he heard no matter how often the same thing had been said to him If it is not possible to satisfy the craving for spiritual knowledge by the gospel the elder did not know where satisfaction could be found for in that gospel was every principle of truth and righteousness The gospel had been established for the redemption solution and exhal tation of man for his development in everything The saints were peculiar in their religion They were not longfated or sanctimonious Their religion is mutual and practical Jesus Christ had offered his life as an atonement for the sins of ru ankindmaking it possible for man to go back into the presence of the Father He brought the authority to act with him but after his crucifixion the authority had been taken from the earth and then occurred a long period of spiritual darkness In this age the power and authority had been returned to the I earth This is the belief of the Saints and there is nothing unnatural in it They believe that God is the supreme being having control of both the spIritual and material worlds and that he had commissioned Joseph Smith to act herein the flesh and establish on the earth pridciples of eternal life There seemed nothing unnatural in this belief They believe God is the father of mankind that He is all powerful in heaven and on earth and that He can and has delegated some of his power to those in this world In believing as they did concerning these things consisted the Saints peculiarity With them the question is what shall they do to be saved Anciently it was necessary to repent and be baptized by one living authority to perform the ceremony and so it is today Next came the Holy Ghost which could only ba conferred by the laying on of hands by one commissioned to do so The saints had been baptized for the remission of sin and had hands laid upon them for the reception of the Holy Ghost which latter was a testimony to each receiving it of the divinity and truthfulness i of the gospel They had gathered for the purpose of building up the kingdom of God and the establishment of his will upon the earth The progress of the kingdom did not depend upon individuals The matter was in the hand3 of God and beyond the power of man to retard its growth It was a matter for individual concern whether a man obeyed Gods commands and carried out his will but his refusal to do so could not affect Gods kingdomwhich had been established upon the earth for the last time and nothing can prevail against it If one were faithful and earnest in furthering Gods purposes he would be lewarded but it not he would have to take the consequences The gospel teaches its adherents all good and leads them to avoid all evil of whatever nature 1 he Holy Ghost is a constant light to the best of all those who possess it guiding them into the right paths Elder Lewis bore testimony to his knowledge of the divinity of the gospel and earnestly exhorted the saints to be I faithful in obeying it and carrying out its purposes The choir sang an anthem and Elder John Nicholson pronounced I the benediction In a Decline Dr PIERCE Sec Sir Last fall my daughter was in a decline and everybody thought
