obtaining by false pretences the sum of £2 14s 2d the moneys of HM Treasury She pleaded guilty Gladys Ada Webster registration clerk in the Department at the Burslem Labour Exchange said that on November 28th the defendant applied for out-of-work donation She represented that she )9 and in consequence witness gave her an adult policy Witness saw her again on January 8th spoke to her about her age and asked ner to bring her birth certificate She brought it and witness noticed that a nine in the figures 1399 was in a different coloured ink to the rest of the writing As far as she could judge it had been altered She showed the certificate to Miss Cheetham and she gave instructions that defendant must procure another birth certificate On January 9tli she brought another one and examining it very carefully witness found that this too had been altered The alteration was unmistakable Pay was suspended and when defendant was asked seriously if she had made the alteration she commenced to cry and eventually admitted it Muriel Agnes Cheetham clerk in charge of the department at the Exchange gave corroborative evidence and stated that defendant drew £5 8s 4d which was £2 14 2d in excess of the sum to which she was entitled Annie Wood clerk in the same department gave evidence of payments to the defendant Pamela Elsie Turner clerk at the Poor Law Offices Burslem said defendant came on the 9tli January for the birth certificate produced It had been altered from 1901 to 1899 Defendant stated that she altered the first birth certificate so that she might go munition making ftjie was under age at the time She altered the second certificate because she was afraid of the consequences The magistrates wished to know what precautions were taken against the presentation of false certificates Miss Cheetham said they were minutely examined and if there was the slightest doubt they communicated with the Registrar The Deputy Chief Constable (Mr Williams) said he had been directed by the Public Prosecutor to ask the Court to deal adequately with the defendant as frauds of tills character were becoming very prevalent throughout the country The authorities asked for assistance in endeavouring to stamp them out The magistrates said the offence was one which justified heavy punishment and yet they were reluctant to send the defendant to gaol Still they would have to impose a penalty that would be a warning to ot' ers because if such frauds were carried on restrictions and regulations would be brought into force which would entail great hardship upon those who were honest and straigh'for-ward in their application There would be a fine of £5 10s in default of payment two imprisonment jsociation message from Brussels vt i special train from Berlin arrived 'Nridav morning was held at the Grand Hotel Hanley on Friday evening to further consider the proposal to amalgamate the unions into one large society A great number of meetings with constant discussion hare been held during the past twenty years and at length amalgamation appears to be on the point of consummation The societies represented at last conference were the Natioral Society' of Pottery AVorkers the United Society and the United Society Twenty years ago there were over a dozen trade unions in the potting trade with only a limited membership but now there are forty thousanl trade unionists and there is every prospect of one tremendously strong union being formed as long desired by the employers who have themselves set an example by uniting their own organisations into a Federation Employers and employed have long recognised that union is strength and that both sides ought to be fully organised for the promotion of their common interests and the development and prosperity of the trade generally: and under the auspices of the National Council of the Pottery Industry the manufacturers have given the trade union leaders feciliti -s for drawing the attention to tfin advantages of organisation Mr A Appleton Secretary of the General Federation of Trade Unions who has for many years taken an active interest in the potting trade and in this trade union amalgamation scheme presided and the delegates present included the three secretaries Mr Clowes JP National Society of Pottery Workers Mr Callear Society and Mr Martin Society The amalgamation scheme was unanimously approved and it was agreed that the amalgamated society sh uld take all special contributions for sickness and funeral benefits and assume liability for the payment of such benefits as they fall due It was also unanimously agreed that the amalgamation should not in any way prejudice the standing or financial positioi of any permanent official of any section joining the amalgamation As a matter of fact the growth of the trade union movement in the potting trade has been so considerable that the services of the existing officials of the various societies can be utilised The scheme will be submitted to a ballot of the member Mr Clowes was appointed Secretary to the Joint Committee It is pointed out that the object in view is not destructive hut constructive and aims at protecting the best interests of the workers by a powerful and comprehensive organisation which will also be able to join with the manufacturers in protecting and developing the trade i pon which work and wages depend The local public and leaders of progress have watched the course of events with sympathetic ii terest and the best wishes of the public wait upon the new amalgamation which in promoting the interests of those engaged in the industry will also safeguard and stimulate the welfare of North Staffordshire generally Total (for six wkts) 46 Shelton Welfare Busknnll by the aid rif singles 35 minutes producing 30 according to length of their actual service and not as heretofore on an age basic This scheme which it is hoped will shortly be in force is the result of a suggestion by Lord Derby that the Derby men serving with the Colours should be replaced by men previously exempt from military service because they were employed in the manufacture of munitions a suggestion which it was found would be impracticable without again enforcing the Military Service Act THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP GLOUCESTERSHIRE SUSSEX GLOUCESTER Saturday This game was in an interesting position when resumed at Gloucester gallant attempt to fly the Atlantic in their Sopwith Rolls-Royce biplane The wireless operator reports that while in mid-Atlantic on Monday morning he intercepted the following message which was being sent out broadcast by the cable-repairing steamer Faraday: Red light of aeroplane sighted at 4 1 am (GMT) on 19th inst in position 50deg 23min north latitude and 30deg 2nrin west This means that at five (British summer time) on Monday morning Mr Hawker after nine flying was approximately in mid-Atlantic 900 miles on a direct course between St Johns (Newfoundland) and Galway (Ireland) and 100 miles north of the main steamer Exceptionally rtormy weather in the Atlantic during Sunday night and Monday is reported by ships arriving at Liverpool and it is thought that no aeroplane could live in
