NEWS 150 mph SIERRAS FOR A 9 POLICE PATROL Grame GMes TAYSIDE Police is to put more muscle into its Perth and Kinross traffic patrols. The force luis ordered two 150 mph Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Coswonhs which will be stationed at Perth and introduced to the Western Division 'beat' early in the New Year. The high-profile German-built Fords are the first of their kind acquired by Tayside. And yesterday, Chief Inspector David Taylor, the area's top traffic officer, predicted they would enhance their "vigorous enforcement of the law." Replacing two Vauxhall Senators at Perth, the four-wheel drive Fords will join an existing patrol car stable consisting of a Jaguar XJ6, two Range Rovers, a Granada and an unmarked Cavalier 4x4. Scotland's three-time world motor racing champion Jackie Stewart played a key role in honing the Sierra Convoith which was developed by Ford's specialist Rallye Sport department.

The car is powered by a 2-litre turbocharged engine developing 220 hhp and, in addition to the enhanced traction and road-holding provided by its 4x4 system, also features standard anti-lock brakes. Northumbria with eight was the first force to put this potent Ford in 'uniform and since them they have been supplied to South Yorks (1), Avon (2), Hertfordshire (1) and Essex 1). Greater Manchester has 16on order, Bedfordshire two, South Yorks I and the Isle of Man 2. Tayside, which will introduce a third Cosworth later in 1992, opted to introduce the car after evaltiating a companysupplied demonstrator on its patch. "Mechanically, the police specification cars are identical to the normal production model," explained a spokesman for Ford which supplies over 52 per cent.

of the country's police can However, they arc fitted with heavy duty batteries and wiring and an extra fuse box to handle the increased electrical demands. They also have a crash-tested radic mounting platform in the boot. Some models have suspension modifications but these are not needed in the Cosworth. So, apart from the extra electrics, the car is standard except for deletion of the sunroof." The Cosworths will be striped up in Tayside Police livery and will have radios and roof strobes fitted after their arrival Ford's Slorra Cosworth out on patrol. Nuclear waste off twinning agenda PERTH and Kinross District Council have decided to keep the transportation of spent nuclear fuel controversy off the twin-town agenda.

The council was asked by Nuclear Free Zones Scotland to write to twin towns in France and Germany seeking their support for moves designed to see spent fuel reprocessed on site rather than see it transported to Dounreay. But Councillor Jean McCormack, with backing from Provost Alex Murray, noted that politics had not been allowed to Interfere with twinning relationships in the past. It was agreed that was the way it should continue.
