NEWS PITLOCHR THEATRE'S TOP AWARD PITLOCHRY Festival Theatre has been honoured by the Arts Council for Great Britain in recognition of the theatre's success in achieving the objectives of its three-year artistic and financial plan. the concerted efforts of theatre staff, together with sponsorship from the Bank of Scotland worth £17,000, Pitlochry Festival Theatre has succeeded in raising more than four times the award funding. "We're absolutely delighted that our achievements have been recognised," said Paul McLennan, administrator of Pitlochry Festival Theatre. "Thanks to the Arts Council funding and Bank of Scotland's sponsorship, we have been able to achieve our aim of making the theatre a visitor attraction as well as a place to see A commemorative certificate was presented to theatre representatives by the Rt. Hon.

Tim Renton, Minister for the Arts, at a ceremony in London recently. The original aim was to raise 2 for every I of funding received from the Art Council's Incentive Funding Scheme. However, thanks to Scotland, and Paul McLennan, quality plays. "We've extended and improved our daytime facilities for visitors and have been able to stage a wide variety of popular productions. Pttlocttry Fistlva! Theatre, THAT famous fragment of local history, the Batik of the Clans, Is to be re-enacted on the North Inch this Sunday. It may not be as bloody as the original but the promise is that it will appear just as real. It was in 1396 that Clan Chattan lined up against their old rivals Clan Kay to settle their differences, with Robert 11l an onlooker. Thirty men fought on either side and apparently only 12 survived. Sir Waiter Scott may have romanticised the story in Ms book The Fair Maid of Perth and involved a local blacksmith, Hal o' the Wynd, who came from his dose off Methven Street to make the sides even.

There is even a suggestion that one combatant escaped death by dashing from the field and swimming the River Tay to safety. MI this is set to be repeated on Sunday afternoon when members of the well-known White Cockade Society bring their version al old events back to life. The society was founded to re-enact famous battles, mainly involving the Jacobites and their Hanovarian opposition. But the North Inch event will be a strictly one-off, with the society moving to an early age. Since it was founded, the society has been involved in filming when battle scenes were required.

It figures in an audio display exhibition on Rob Roy in Callendar and only last Sunday was again filmed at Killiecrankk for a future television production. Sunday's event is being sponsored by the Perth Partnership and the contestants will assemble in front of the City Hall at 2 p.m. They will then march behind Perth and District Pipe Band to the North Inch for the 2.30 p.m. start. End of road for Fife bus bid A TEAM of managers and workers yesterday failed to persuade a judge that it should be allowed to re-open attempts to buy the Fife Scottish bus company. Last month, Scottish Secretary lan Lang announced that he was approving Stagecoach, the Perth-based private firm as the preferred bidder.

A bid by the consortium, under the name Henjac 171, was rejected. Henjac went to the Court of Session to challenge Mr Lang's decision in favour of Stagecoach, arguing that its offer was at least equal to Stagecoach's and should have been preferred. Henjac claimed that Mr Lang did not give proper consideration to its bid. However, Lord Coulsfield said Henjac had no established any grounds to justify him in granting its petition for judicial review of Mr Lang's decision. He will issue his reasons in writing later.

Mr Brian Souter, chairman of Stagecoach Holdings, said his company would 'maintain a comprehensive network of quality services at an affordable Concessionary schemes for senior citizens and the disabled would be honoured. 'Risk' driver was over limit ABERFELDY forestry worker Stuart Hogg took a chance and drove home after being out drinking.
