Norwich City have seenred the services of Lirinxstono, the Brighton and Hove half-back. Up to last night fourteen catchea had bees in the march between Notts. and Sceeex. At Brighton yesterday a ball from HaQam hit Cox's leg stomp hard, without removing the bails. E.

J. Diver, the ok! Surrey and Warwickshire player, is now acting as coach to the Newport (Mon.J Club. Stockport County have signed Crump, the Sfcalybridge Rovers' ccntre. Crump was formerly with Glossoo. McLuckie, the ex-Aston Villa centre-forward, and lately of Plymouth Argyle, has just aigned for Dundee.

E. Wheatley rode 33rd winner of the season when he scored on Wintcrfold in the Masham Plate at Ripon yesterday. Three races fell to Ekey's stable at Ripon yesterday, bringing the total number of successes for the season up to 37. Luton have secured the services of Sandy Brown, tlie Middlesbrough-Tottenham Hotspur and Scottish International centre forward. Authorities aro claiming that Butt created a new record in first-class cricket when he shared in the dismissal of tho firs: five Notts, batsmen.

John Campbell, of Partirk Thistle, Blackburn Rovers. Glasgow Rangors, and West Ham fame, has again signed for Edinburgh Hibernians. Blackburn Rovers last night signed James Robertson, tho well-known inside forward of the Valo of Leven, for wiicm several league clubs had been angling. Mr. H.

J. Newbould, the secretary of Derby County F.C.. has tho transfer of D. S. who has played for tho Worktop Town club, at a substantial figure.

Suscx rejoice in tho possession of two bowlers (Cox and John Seymour) who are right-hand batsmen, and one pec i men (KilLiek) of the inexplicable type, a loft-hand bat and right-arm bowler. Burglars entered the Sussex County pavilion at Brighton, during Thursday but all tho money having been removed, nothing was apparently stolon except a pair of boots belonging to one of the Notts, an-a tours. It is officially announced a Boston, U.S.A. telegram) that Msssrs. U.

Ward, W. A. Larned, W. J. Clothier, and B.

C. Wright will represent the National Lawn Tennis Association in oontesfc for the Davis trophy. C. J. Kortright reappears in the Essex team against Lancashire at Manchester on Monday next.

Four years have elapsed since Board made a hundred, his last three-figure innings prior to yesterday being 161 against Essex at Leyton in 1901. Yesterday Damson played splendidly against Weiss at Newcastle-on-Tvne. Tho Yorksh ireman made breaks of 144. 184, 229, 212. 224, and 114, while Weiss accounted for efforts of 176, 126.

103, 70, 72, and 7L Dawson, 14,635. In addition to the transfer of Peter Machin to Lincoln, Wallsend Park Villa, one of the best of the Tyneside miner clubs, has also transferred. Joseph Jameson, right full-back, to Sheffield Wednesday, and William Hickleton, centre-half, to Portsmouth. Small Heath yesterday transferred Alfred Chaplin, their reserve half-back, to Woolwich Arsenal. Chaplin was signed bv Small Heath three seasons ago after a creditable display wrth the Birmingham team in the junior international.

He is a native of Colcshill, near Coventry. Tho Bolton Wanderers' directors have decided to erect a new stand at an estimated cost of £3.000, and a special meeting of the shareholders is to be held to give effect to the proposal. The old Bolton Wanderers' haif-baek. Archie Freebairn, has come to terms with the directorate for another season. New Brompton F.C.

have this week sccured the signatures of William Marriott (outside left), late of Northampton, and W. B. Floyd (back), late of Gainsborough Trinity, for next season. Three of tho best players in the Chatham Club have also joined New W. Snelgrove (centTeforward), A.

Webb (back), and A. J. Burns (outride left). The prolonged stand which saw George Gtznn and Harritfaff at their best yesterday was the more remarkable because it. was made in a match which up to thai hud been characterised by comparatiTely moderate scoring.

Tho young batsmen showed tho brightest It was finite a revival of what used to happen when Notts, went to Brighton in days of yore. An exclusive meeting of the provincial clubs of the Southern League, convened by the Reading F.C., was held in London last night when, with closed doors, the views of the clubs represented as to which of the applicants for admission to the First Division should be supported were invited. It was decided that Luton should receive the unanimous support of the meeting, and it was gathered that the only vacancy will fall to either Norwich City or the Crystal Palace. In the match Leicestershire Warwickshire at Birmingham, commencing next Monday, the following teams will represent C. E.

Whittle, C. S. Baker, sad E. Field. Last night the Warrington people made merry over the victory of the local club in the final of the Northern Union Cup Competition.

For four hours the streets were crowded to witness the procession organised by the Mayor, in which brilliantly illuminated tramcars, containing the Warrington players and three bands, took part, and were welcomed at the Town Hall by the Mayor and Mayoress and Corporation. Champagne was served, and the Mayor wired the Mayor of Hull, saying they were drinking the health oi the Rovers, the runners-up, and wishing tbem every success next time. The Australians were entertained to last evening in the Pavilion at the Oval by the Surrev Club, all the players being present except Victor Trumper. Lord Alveistone presided, and proposed the toast of the evening. The Australian Team." Mr.

J. Darling and Mr. Frank Laver responded, the former in the course of his speech expressing a wish that all the Test matches could be played out to a finish, irrespective of time. In responding to the toast of his own health. Lord Alverstone said this could not be done owing- to the pressure of county cricket.

Lord Dalmeny and the members of the Surrey eleven were among the company. The visit of the Prince of Wales and his two sons, Prinoe Edward and Prince Albert, to the Oval jesterday was an action of princely courtesy that was warmly appreciated by the Australian cricketers. Since his tour in the Antipodes, his Royal Highness has evinced a lively interest in all things concerning Australia. The Prince and his sons shook hands warmly with each member of the side and expressed his pleasure at being able to give them a personal welcome to this country. The young Princes also greeted the Colonials with a true English grip, and asked them many eager questions about the game.

and Australian game was given in these notes at die beginning of the week. With the least bit of hick O. Jones and his merry men would have inflicted a defeat upon our (mm over the seas. Bat as it was, the honours of the game were gained by Notts. In his present form A.

O. Jbnss has a rare chance of being picked for mora than one, if not all, of the Test games, and John Gonn will not unlikely bo there with him. will be a Nottingham revival if yoa like! At one time of the day the names of Khoda and Hirst, toe prido of tho Rose combination, signified the high-water mark of bowling skill. These two left-handers were very deadly to batsmen. and always their names were found up in the leading division of the bowling averages as highest wickct-takera.

Then they bicesmned out into right-hand bats of most exceptional lahbre. set Wllfred a shining example in tSts respect, and the younger man set himself to rrval his comrade's deeds. By the way the two are illtreating other bowlers this season, the old adage of "A fellow-feeling makes us wondrous kind" is evidently not written in their own particular dictionaries. It is just as it should be that the misunderstanding between that fine fast bowler. W.

Brearley, and the Lancashire Committee had at last been amicably settled. He turned out against Warwickshire, and may tie depended upon to do further service for the Red Rose. Wait till he gets a wicket that helps him, and then his servioes will, perhaps, be better appreciated than they seem to have been. Frank Iredale, who was a member of the 1899 Australian team, is following the present combina- tion in the capacity of an expert critic. He is to be seen in the various Press boxes casting a wary eye on the doings of his compatriots.

Taking into consideration that they were meeting a m'ich stronger and more experienced team than wfcon they loet by five to to University College on the previous Monday, Hyson Green did remarkably well to escape 90 easily. The formation of the section of t.he Notting-1 ham dub now an accomplished fact, i the formal inauguration having taken place a meeting hekl in the Exchange Hall.

Nottingham, on Thursday night. Mr. A. J. Hoult presided, and there was a numerous attendance, including prominent members and officials of the Chairman, after expressing regret at tho inability of Dr.

Roberts (the president) to attend, explained that the Nottingham Ladies' Hockey Club formed a swimming section some time ago, awl it was hoped now to amalgamate that with the branch in oonneefcion with the premier swimming club in the city. formal resolution approving of the establishment of a branch, was carried, and the meeting then proceeded with the adoption of rules and the election of officers for the vear. Her Grace the Duchess of Portland wae unanimously appointed the first president of the new ctnb; Mis. J. B.

Roberts. Mm; Clarke, Dr. Daboll, and Mr. Hazzledine were elected vice-presidents; Miss F. Farmer was chosen as Miss G.

Roberts was appointed vicecaptain; Miss A. Stevenson was selected to act as nonorary secretary; and the following ladies were elected to serve on the committee: F. Bloor, Mms M. Burrows, Churley, Goodall. Miss Greenhalge.

Miss A. Emmett, Pieroe, and Pullman. Our attention has again bren drawn to the unpleasant state of affairs existing at Lcmghborough between the N.M.C.S.C. and the Baths Committee of the Corporation of that town. 13.

with the exception of the virtually the only active swimming club in Lough borough, and baa done a very great deal, and capable of doing a very great deal more, to popularise and propagate the knowledge of swimming, but it has been quite unable to induce the authorities to grant the club such facilities and privileges as are customary in practically every rowu where the usefulness of such organisations is appreciated We quoted at some length last week from the very well reasoned and cogent speeches of Mr. 8. R. Frost, the president of the the bon. secretary of the Midland Counties the former speaking as an enlightened man of public affairs, and the latter as one of the highest experts in the country upon swimming and adjustment of terms between public bath authorities and swimming dubs.

Both gentlemen, though speaking strongly under the sense of a real grievance, said no more than was compatible with the facta of a case, and one felt justified in the hope that such a straightforward statement of the position and so reasonable a reference to the conditions prevailing elsewhere would have produced some sort of promise of conoeaiion from the authorities. The only development, however, that has come to our notice is contained in an apparently inspired" article in a contemporary. Elasticity in the presentation of facts and licence in the to be drawn from them is not, perhaps, unusual in special pleading, bat the author of the notes which nave been sent to us shows such an ignorance or disregard of the aotoal drum, of the esse almost every line he writes that if his were not so annoying to these concerned it would be amusing. To deal with these nasstetements in Che order in which they are made, Mr. Frost is firet alleged to have complained that the Loughborough Baths do not pay.

Mr. Frost did nothing of the kmd; he pointed oat wfcv the baths do not pay, and it haa always been the position taken up by the complainants in this controversy that it is not tho primary purpose of public baths that they should pay. but that they should exist for tile promotion of the health and recreation of the community. The writer next reters to the multifaziotv; pLiima for preferential treatment by swimming olufcs in the town. really funny, for at the present moment the N.M.C.

and the Ladies' aro ttie only active I swimming dubs in Loughborough, the town dub having been choked to death principally by HEomi discouragement. It is alleged, moreover. tbst wants to piay polo every night, and monopolize the bath to die exclusion of the general public. Thin ia a arras exaggeration and a ciear travesty of fact. At present Che club ore of the club for one hour, not a whole evening, as has been stated, ocoe a week from eight to nine o'otcck.

To enable it to extract more advantage from tie baths than this scroll concession affords, tho club has asked tho oommittee to allow the special use of the baths on another night in the week for half on boor alter die tKual time for cloang. For this privilege Mr. Frost offered to pay the attendant for his over-tine and trouble, and also for gas and other extras, bat tbe hm not so far been acceded to. Great unction is laid to the soul of the Corporation for granting privilejes to school children who are learning to swim. These "special privileges" consist in allowing tbe children on fonr days a week to use tbe baths for a penny instead of twopence, but they have to provide their own towels, whiti alrnrwt nullifies die The likening bv Mr.
