LOS ANGELES HERALD: TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST 6, 1895. LOCAL FIELD OF COMMERCE Private Reports From Sales of Fruit at London POOR FRUIT, GOOD PRICfcS Prospect of a Satisfactory Market for California Products For That Will Bear Shipment Well Ootid Pricts May He Obtai -cJ -Ci-aoss Walnuts A letter was received vestarday by Superintendent Wiggins of tlie Chamber of Commerce from H. M. Russell, the wellknown mining man, now in liurope. Mr.

Russell writes from London, under (Into of July 24th, saying thut he was in that city on the day ot tlie sale of ''what was called" the first California fruit to the London market. This is the sale of whish glowing reports were sent out by telegraph, the report bsing that the fruit was regarded as of unusually line quality, and that buyers fell over one another in tbeir anxiety to bid. Mr. Russell says tbe consignment consisted of pears and plums, and tbat it was small, poor and arrived in bad order. Nevertheless it was bought, and at good prices.

A little observarion of the English market strongly impressed Mr. Russell with the opinion tbat a good outlet for California fruit might be found in London, provided always tbat the fruit could be got there in good condition. Tbe on ly giapes in tne London market are hothouse product, and sell at 4s. or $1.02 a pound, at which figure California growers could pay freight two or three times around the world and still make a protit such as they have never yet realized. There a few California apples on the London market, which stll ut nigb figures; plums at the time of Mr.

Russell's visit sold at 62' a cents a pound and pears at 4 cents each; California English walnuts brought 25 cents a pound. As regards this latter product, there is a practioa Uy unlimited market in England, and tbe prices are sufficient to warrant extensive shipments. On the whole, Mr. Russell regards the English market as affording a promising opening for such California fruits as bear shipment best, for it must be remembered tnat while the prices to be obtained are good, there is demand only for fruit of good quality. tr The consumption of tobacco in its various forms shows a steady increase.

Last month, according to government reports, there were manufactured in this country 865,726,647 cigars, cigarettes, 22,057,443 pounds of tobacco and more than a million pounds of snuff. This was an increase over the production during the same period last ysar of nearly two million cigars, half a million cigarettes and one and a half million pounds ot tobacco. Grocery scarcity of California fruit in Philadelphia is now the problem confronting the local trade. As a result of the discrimination which has apparently been against the Philadelphia market, the fruit here has sold for $300 per car higher than last year, and this has naturally affected the demand. The California growers' reason for this action, which is certainly against tbeir own interests, is not known.

They seem strangely indifferent to tbe preservation of the market they have secured in this section. LOCAL PRODUCE Wholesale and Retail Quotations Corrected Dally LOS ANGELES, Aug. 5, The week opens with all the conditions favorable for good trade. The opening of wheat revealed the existenco of a considerable quantity of bullish explosives in the pit. Tho rise, although nut very high, suftioed to alarm a few shorts, which kept the advance going for about an hour. The foreigners had buying orders in New York for December wheat, and the New Yorkers had their orders in this market at the start for botb December and September. The bull feeling was kept iv check by the news regarding spring wheat in tbe northwest. Compared with Saturday's closing September rested cents higher.

Conn was Weak under the favorable crop prospects and for the greater part of the session the traders did not appear to care which delivery they sold short. September closed below Saturday's' final quotations; May closed at compared with oh Saturday. Oats declined again and displayed a very weak feeling throughout. Septemler dropped off to which breaks the record again for tbe lowest point of the season, and closed at c.
