IT SHELTERS THE SHELTERLESS The Good Work Done at the Florence Home. The First Anniversary of That Institution Yesterday. The Report of the Manager. Mr. A.

M. Armour, Outlines the Splendid Results That Have Rewarded Faithful --orts. The first anniversary of the Florence Home for Erring Girls was held yesterday. A large attendance of those interested in the work being noted. Mr.

A. M. Armour, the manager, made the following report: In reviewing the work of the Florence home for the past year, being the first year of its existence, we are filled with unfeigned gratitude to God for Ills great blessing upon our labors, and His evident approbation upon what has been done in bis name. Beginning, as we did, in much weakness and ignorance of the work, it was only as we leaned hard upon His mighty arm and depended upon the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance, that we could take a single step, but we found tlie promises unfailing and changeless. In the midst of many a trying experience, wherein ground for discouragement might have been found, it wbb most blessed and heart-inspiring to receive from God himself come assurance, such as "certainly I will be with thee." (Ex.

312) "Be strong and of a good courage, be not afraid neither be thou dismayed, for tbe Lord thy God is with whithersoever thou goeat." As the months went by and onr numbers inoreased, we established a weekly meeting in tbe home, held for and with the girls. These meetings have been graciously owned and blessed by God. All of the girls in tbe home since tbe commencement of tbe meetings have given their hearts to God and professed conversion. This was the Lord's doings, and it is marvelous in our eyes. At Christmas each of tbe girls received a beautiful Bible, and several other presents which were greatly appreciated by them.

The work of the home is done by the girls. Their clothes are made and kept in proper order by themselves, and the clothes of the infants born in the home ate largely made by the girls. We aim to keep them employed judiciously. The efficient and assidioue services of Dr. Elizabeth Follansbee cannot be too highly appreciated by the board.

Many time she has been called to tbe home in the night, but neither darkness or distance ever deterred her from the most faithful and prompt attendance. The excellent sanitary condition of our home and family is sufficient comment upon the success of her skill and experience. The great burden of responsibility and labor that has rested upon our beloved matron, Mrs. Mary Hilbisb, has been borne in a most self-sacrificing and pains-taking manner. From her tender, motherly welcome to tbe girls when they first enter tbe home, to her prayer at tbe bedside of some sufferer in nature's supreme hour of pain, and the ever to be remembered family devotions, all have had a powerful effect in leading tbe girls to Jesus.

Her Christian life, we believe, has stamped the characters of those who have been under influence and teaching. During the year there have been 20 girls admitted to the borne, accounted for as follows: At work. sent borne, gone astray, Wbittier reform school, remaining at tbe home at this date, 9. Receipts and diebnrsements, $2300. To all who have aided us in the work either by money or goods, we return our grateful thanks, and we are persuaded they will find these gifts to be "treasurers laid up on high." Dr.

Bresee, the president of the board of directors, followed in an earnest address setting forth the aims of the institution, and Mrs. Mary Hilbisb, the matron, gave a vivid picture of the good, accomplished dnring tbe year. Rev. J. M.

Hervey and Rev. J. W. Ellsworth also gave testimony to tbe worth of the efforts of the officers of the home, and with tbe singing and other services the afternoon was profitably and pleasantly passed. An earnest appeal was made for donations of clothes and supplies of all kinds for the use of those sheltered in the home, which will doubtless meet with the generous response it deserves.

Thanks were extended to all helpers, especially to Dr. Elizabeth Follansbee, who has been particularly devoted to the care of the inmates of the home. How Ia This? Something unique even in these days ot mammoth premium offers, is the latest efforts of Stafford's Magazine, a New York, monthly of home and general reading. The proposition ia to send the Magazine one year for one dollar, the regular subscription price, and in addition to send eaoh subscriber fifty-two oomplete novels daring the twelve months, one eaoh week. Think of it.

Yon receive a new and complete novel, by mail, post paid, every week for 62 weeks and in addition you get the Magazine once month, for twelve months all for one dollar. It ia an offer which the publishers can only afford to make in the confident expectation of getting a hundred thousand new subscribers. Among tbe authors in the coming series are Wilkie Collins, Walter Beaant, Mrs. Oliphant, Mary Cecil Hay, Florence Marryat, Anthony Trollope, A. Conan Doyle, Miss Braddon, Captain Marryat, Miss Thackery and Jules Verne.

If you wish to take advantage of this unusual opportunity send one dollar for Stafford's Magazine, one year. Your first copy of the Magazine and your first number of the fiftytwo (one each week) which you are to receive during the year will be sent you by return mail. Remit by P. O. order, registered letter or express.

Tbe subject under discussion was a coatinnntiou of tho one at last week's meeting, to wit: What course most woman pursue to get her political rights After a lively ami interesting exchange of thought, in which Dr.

The ladies constituting these meetings are not cranks or enthusiasts, but clearheaded, thinking ifomen, who propose to know t.bey are right before they go ahead. Hence tho meetings are educational. Tbe object and purpose of their initial society as explained in their circular letter in: "To awaken a more general interest among women in wave and means to support themselvea, to foster self reliance, to become educated in matters pertaining to civil and politioal government, to secure woman's enfranchisement, and to obtain concert of bction among themselvea in movements for the amelioration of their condition." The discussions are conducted according to strict parliamentary rnles, and are constantly increasing in interest.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. PROCBKDINOS OF THE BOARD AT TKSTSiROAY'S MKKTINQ. A Number of Complaints Against Members or the of Alarm Boxes Wanted. The meeting of the fire commissioners yesterday morning was attended by all members. The most important business transacted was the selection of tbe crew for the new engine house, and tbe suspension of Engineer Lynch of Engine Mo.

3, and Fireman Joe Sepulveda. Nothing of any great importance was transacted, the meeting consisting of routine business. Superintendent Akin of the Pacific railway presented a communication elating that a fireman wearing badge No. 11 had refused to show hia badge to the conductor, and created much annoyance. Hie behavior wae very obnoxious.

Three witnesses corroborated the superintendent'!) statement. Joe Sepulveda was the fireman wearing the badge, and he waa called in to testify in bia behalf. He denied the charges, bnt the commissioners didn't see it that way. He waa fined $10 and suspended for 15 days, the suspension to remain in effect until the fine waa paid. The hearing of Engineer Lynch then came up.

It was charged that he had been neglectful of hia duties. He acknowledged to having been drunk but denied that he had neglected bis duties. He made an open confession, pleaded for leniency and then waa suspended until September 11th. A motion was carried to notify the council that tbe furnishing of sponges ia not satisfactory to the department, the contract calling for 50 cent sponges, and the kind needed being $3 sponges. J.

D. Eegau, et presented a petition for a tire alarm box at the corner of Ninth street end Grand avenue, but the matter was laid over until the improvement of the fire alarm system ia taken up for consideration. The new engine house, corner Main and Adams streets, was put in charge of the following orew: Martin Wetzel, engineer; John Strobm, driver of hose cart; Bort Kizer, C. Barringer, J. Noonan, callmen.

It was decided that the new engine shall be placed instead of engine No. 4, and the latter shall be placed at the Main and Adams street engine bouse. Mr. Neseler was transferred from No. 2 to No.

4, and Mr. Stoermer from No. 4 to No. 2. The fire alarm box corner Union avenue and Temple street was ordered moved to Belmont avenne and Temple street.

Bart Smith was transferred from chemical No. 1 to the new engine house corner Main and Adams streets, and Mr. Jenkins waa selected to fill hia old place as driver of No. 1. C.

Fnsilear waa promoted to captain of chemical No. 2, and J. F. Connell was elected a permanent fireman in Fusilear'a place. Mr.

McLain was appointed a committee to look into the sanitary condition of engine bouse No. 3. SANTA MONICA'S HIGHWAYMEN Brady Held to Answer and Carter Dismissed. The examination in the case of tbe people against Brady and Joe Carter, for highway robbery in holding np the brakeman Carter, was held at Justice Willis's court room, Santa Monica, yesterday, when Brady waa held to await trial at tbe superior court and Carter was dismissed.
