and trees BY NATASHA JAKSICH THE OLYMPIAN Five young men from Boy Scout Hoop 266 in Olympia have organized and led community projects for their Eagle Scout awards Together their projects totaled volunteers from his troop and com- COMMUNITY NEWS SOUTH SOUND Fire departments get federal grants Fire departments in Mason County and Aberdeen received awards from the federal Assistance to Firefighter Grant program Mason County Fire Protections Dist 5 received $255299 and Aberdeen Fire Department received $56700 The grants will help purchase equipment fund health and safety programs enhance emergency medical services and pay for fire prevention programs THURSTON COUNTY Waste center to stop sales of compost The county will stop selling and distributing compost at the Waste and Recovery Center after the last remaining pile of compost is sold out probably in mid-August Yard waste brought to the center is now being trucked elsewhere to be used for compost or fuel The center will continue to accept yard waste after the on-site compost operation is shut down Upgrades finished at Amtrak depot Nearly $500000 in improvements have been completed at Thurston Centennial Amtrak Station Federal state Amtrak and local funds were used to lengthen and raise the passenger loading platform allowing for easier boarding and meeting the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines An hand-deliver my banner This was definitely going out of his way since I live in Rochester I just wanted to say that the support from Jim Monk the Elks and the numerous people that donated money and time to make this program possible is heartwarming to the families of the service people I am proud to carry on the tradition that dates back to 1917 of displaying a banner My andmofoer I have been toll had one in window during World War IL I am writing to express my appreciation for Jim Monk and the BPOE 186 from Olympia Monk chaired the Blue Star Banner Committee that distributed blue star
