Others want to help with paper planning, development, and organization. A few come in with 'B' or 'A' papers and ask how they can improve their writing even further. Waiting to help them are the two Writing Centre program assistants, Diane Griffiths and Faye Hyndman, who both work at both campuses, as well as faculty with release time to work in the centre, and faculty volunteer from a wide variety of teaching areas. Writing Centre tutors emphasize to students that staff and volunteers aren't there to edit or proofread papers for mistakes they try not to write on the student's paper at all. Rather, they coach students to recognize general flaws and strengths in their writing, as well as grammar mistakes, and encourage them to think about the writing process.

"We try not to build student dependency," says Griffiths. "It's a self -weaning process we encourage them to take what they need from us and then go out on their own." 'Ji's been over two years since hallway laments about the state of student writing were converted into action through the creation of the Fraser Valley College Writing Centre. Now the centre is thriving on both college campuses, with more than 2,100 student visits recorded this year. Writing Centre grew out of, and reports to, the Writing Across the Curriculum committee, which started as a way for FVC faculty to share ideas about using writing in courses and encouraging students to improve their writing. "Faculty in all disciplines shared a concern about student writing," says Virginia Cooke, coordinator of the Writing Centre, and one of its founders.

"It ranged from, 'Gee, these students can't write a grammatical sentence' to concern that students' writing habits are based on not believing that their writing had a real purpose or audience." The Writing Centre addresses both those problems and a range of others. It's not a remedial centre it's aimed at students who are working at all levels in the college.
