But once they were under way the thriH and glory erf being under his own wheel at last made him impatient He began to crowd Jerry, riding close, almost blinded by dus- and riding into a shower of atones that flew back through 4he dust to rattle against bis Jhood and windshield. **You crazy or something?' Perry yelled furiously. Ricky •couldnt hear, and didnt look over to see how Jerry was taking being passed. He took Chub next, and then eherm. They let him clatter by .(puzzled by the fierceness at his (driving, wary of his recklessness He was showing them. He closed in on Link Alter** car (which was leading the pack. ILink had always led, from the ;days when they were little kids. No matter what it was, he'd always been the first to try something new and succeed at it, from riding a two-wheel bike to having a car. Ricky drew up alongside Link, looked over, and received • crooked, sardonic grin in return. Ht pressed the accelerator against the floor with all his strength, intending to spurt past Link, but for some reason he didn't pull ahead. The ride was getting too wild lor Ricky. Bumps threw him in the air, he landed heavily, his car fought to run off the side of the road. He was scared, afraid a bad hole would toss him off the road or into Link's or. Ht risked another look to se< how Link was taking his break- nock race and was shocked to •M ttot Mty, mocking «ri» rtill on Link's mouth, and the relaxes one-handed driving. A car approached. Ricky focused his eyes on it, sighting over the wheel as though aiming ; gun. The road wasnt wid enough for three. Somebody would have to give, else. Somebody Ricky glanced at Link again Link's grin was tighter. Link could yield or pull ahead to let Ricky in behind him. Bu Link responded to Ricky's determination not to yield by matching Ricky's speed. The] stayed abreast Ricky knew Link was forcing him to the limit and keeping him there, testing him, sure that Ricky would give at the last moment, break, and pufl in behind the convertible, • * • r THE car ahead loomed larger The driver slowed as he saw ;he two cars bear down on him at top speed. Ricky saw the car slow down and waver as the driver .tried to make up his mind. Bat he wouldn't give. He wouldn't! Not o Link. Not any more. He straightened his arms and braced himself. There was going to be a crash. They'd both hit the op- coming car. There was always he ditch. . . . The driver of tbe approaching car made the needed move to ivert disaster. He pulled oft the oad and went into the ditch, a fraction of a second before the wo racing cars roared past, howering him with dust and gravel. As he flashed by, Ricky aught a glimpse of the man's taring face, and saw the lips moving. He didn't hear tbe man gun with which to kill the rivtrs of the can that had driven him from tht/road. And then Link lifted Mr hand n a farewell gesture, and with- fight the blinding dust and spray of pebbles and stones that flew up from under the tires. It was with a mixed feeling of frustra-;;j tion and relief that,Ricky gave up, eased off the gas pedal and was kind to his tortured machine. M town again, he pulled up alongside Link's yellow convertible where it was parked in front of the drugstore. Link and Sharon were already in the store. Ricky pushed through the door as the other boys drove into the square and nosed into place beside his car. Link and Sharon were sitting side by side in a booth. Link looked amused as Ricky came in, Sharon angry. "What happened to you?" Link asked. "When I shifted into high, you were gone." "You just wait," Ricky said. Anybody can beat that old heap now, but you just watt." "You fools!" Sharon burst out She wanted to say more, but she was too angry to speak. "By the time I've fot high- compression heads . . .* Ricky >egan seriously, looking at Link,, and dual springing ignition, and ..." "You fool, you," Link said in a high voic«. "You kuh-razy duh-river." (AHARON moved away from Link. Richy looked at her with a reckless smile on his lips; )ut when she did look at him for a moment, there was nothing but disgust on her pretty face. "Man, man, man," Sherm Lucas kept repeating as he clumped into the drugstore. "Ricky, you'rt wild hare if I ever saw one." "Nuts," Chub said, sitting down >eside Ricky. "Just plain, ordi- ary nuts! That's what you at*, loy, if you're gonna be driving, 'm gonna taking flying lessons, don't want no part of no road ou're on." Ricky smiled sarcastically, leased with himself. "1 scar* ou out?"
