There has just leaked out a i-tory to the effect thai the late democratic convention Leavenworth gave the trades unions a snub at which thej feel very indignant. It claimed that previous to the nveution Judge encouraged, if he did not actually suggest it, that the trades unions prepare resolutions such as they would like to see in the democratic platform, and atsured their representatives that they would be passed without opposition. A 6et of resolutions, emanaticg origmallv, it said, from the Typograpnical union, was fixed up aud passed upon by the trades unions of Topeka, Wichita and Kansas City, Kan. A com mittee consisting of one democrat, one republican and one trades union wan, was appointed to take the resolutions to Leavenworth and see that they were properly brought before the convention. The committee, thinking it unnecessary for all to go, placed the papers in the hands of one member, he of democratic proclivities, who proceeded iu due time ou his mission.

Ar riving at Leavenworth, however, he failed to obtain a hearing fronTthe committee on but was rerj nested to leaye his paper9, and was promised that they should be brought before the convention. Relying upon this promise, he came home and reported, but when the platform was published it did not contain a single line to indicate that the trades unions had ever existed, much less been heard from. It is claimed by prominent members that this snub will cost the democratic ticket in this state at least 5,000 votes next fall. Yet the demands of the working men ere exceedingly modest, being as follows: ''Nine hours to constitute a day's work. Weekly payment of wages by corporations.

The many friends of Charles Shumway, an ex-conductor on the St. Joseph Grand Island railway, will learn with regret of his death which tccurred on his farm in southern Kans-a He had the mislortune about a year ago to fall under a car at Hiawatha and was badly cut up and for quite a while it was thought he would die, but a good constitution and the good nursing of his faithful wife pulled him through. The injuries received left him so disabled that he had to retire from railroading. He moved frcuj this city to southern Kansas where he owned a farm, but he found himself in-capal le of doing the work required. This worried him so that he killed himself.

Pouring oil over the household goods, he et fire to them and then shot himself. The house and contents were entirely consumed. Mr. Shu in way's wife is at Axtell, Kansas, with her people, where Mr. Shninway's folks also reside.

Life at the Point. Atchison Glohe. The cadets at West Point feed largely on bread and molasses. They like the New Orleans article of molasses, which they call "Sammy," except freshmen, who are required to refer to it as "Mr. Samsel." A vain lad is taken down' the moment he enters the institution.

A otory is told on a young man named Smith (not our Harry Smith, of Atchison), who went from Kansas some years ago. His appointment was of course chronicled in the local county paper giving the lad's pedigree in most flattering language, and the fond mother marked it and sent it to her dear boy. The other cadets got hold of it, and after a brief trial young Smith was ordered to commit the "piece" to memory, and recite it on the parade grounds four times a day for a month. They told him that vanity was one of the sins of humanity and they wanted to purge him of it. He was thoroughly purged.
