THE CHILLIWACK PROGRESS, Wednesday, May 2, 1984 5A tients they could at least make it edible. To the man who wrote this article I say. "Count your lucky stars you aren't in a place where, after a Caesarean, you are let out next day Marina Kostyshin Chilliwack the past by the prophets" (The Early Church, Pelican Edition). As our friend has pointed out, Christianity today bears the stamp of paganism. Yet history proves beyond a shade of a doubt that this was not always so.

Raymond Fulford Chilliwack This space belongs to readers. Letters submitted are not altered, except for spelling, punctuation and paragraphing where necessary. Letter writers are urged to make their point in about 250 words and comment within the bounds of good taste. Letters which are clearly libelous will not be published. Their authors will be notified in writing of the reason for refusal.

Many volumes could be written on the subject of Easter observance.

Its celebration has become so entwined with the heart and soul of Christianity that even a casual reference to its pagan origins evokes feelings of righteous indignation on the part of even nominal Christians. Yet, strangely enough, early Christians knew nothing of Easter. In its place they celebrated the Christian Passover after sunset on the day preceding the Jewish Passover, which occured each year on the 14th day of the month of Nisan. Yes, indeed. First and second century Christians would have had considerable difficulty recognizing modern Christianity in its present guise.

Professor Henry Chadwick, one of the world's leading church historians and head of the School of Divinity at Oxford University, has made this amazing statement: "The first Christians were Jews, differentiated from their fellow countrymen by their faith that in Jesus of Nazareth the Messiah of the nation's expectation had now come. If something new had happened, it was the action of one and the same God, creator of history, the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the 12 patriarchs. His new word to his people must be consistent with that spoken in cidentally, it should be pointed out that the Easter festival predates the Christian era by several millennia, and that this celebration was second in importance only to the Dec. 25 Saturnalia festival marking the birthday of the Sun God, known to the Romans as Sol Invictus and to other Middle Eastern people as Balder, Mythra and Baal respectively. Unfortunately, Mr.

Jones does not take into account the fact that both of these pagan holidays did not become thoroughly disguised in their "Christian" trappings until many centuries after the birth of Christ. The early church, as one would expect, considered them anathema to its teachings. The first recorded Christmas celebration in the Chris the world does not matter to us. Fred Jones Chilliwack Seeks help Editor, The Progress: I am looking for a descendant of an Andy Wilson MD who is supposed to have practised in your community. He had numerous brothers and one sister who was the first woman to graduate from the University of Edmonton, a Margaret "Doc" Wilson Goodwin.

Their parents were James Wilson and Margaret Weir. Mr. Wilson is buried somewhere in Ontario and we believe that Mrs. Wilson went to Edmonton in 1937. I am researching the family histroy and I would really appreciate any contact from Free advice Editor The Progress: As a visitor to your fair city with its spring beauty and controversy I Ideas for the Next Generation A veteran chemical engineer is passing on his ideas for coal-fueled engines to younger researchers whom he hopes will make his dreams a reality.

One plan is a design for a coal engine with no sliding parts that could take a car from Texas to the East coast on $7 worth of coal. But the engine has never been built and that is what Dr. William Harris hopes his students will do. Who to Blame? Editor, The Progress: I am used to seeing a manager being blamed for mistakes made in his store, but, for some reason, that was not done in the case of the drug mix-up at Shoppers Drug Mart. Rather, members of the general public are being left to decide for themselves whether it is wise to have prescriptions filled there.

Certain aspects of the mix-up are unfortunate: Chilliwack has such a reputation for drug abuse that the pharmacists' mistake may lack impact on some people. After all, they may say, those of us who live in Chilliwack hurt our minds so much by bad habits that little difference was made by dispensing the wrong drug and causing brain 1 rodUn Radlo-MOTtskm and Tatacommunlcaftm ComMMton tian church took place in Responding Editor, The Progress: Concerning "Post Natal Stay" from last week I wish to make a few comments. On April 5, I had a Caesarean section. My second in five years, I also was let out four days later. But I was ready for it.

In fact I felt 100 per cent better once I got home. I could eat and sleep again. Evidently this woman had these problems before she ever left. A doctor should have been conslted on this and on the fact that the husband didn't consider her ready to go home. My husband felt the same way but once he saw my progress he changed his mind.

The only complaint I have is the food. You would think that with the money they get from pa- tion in comparison is one of the most important tools of the propagandist. Fact is subtly altered by suggesting that a person or action is like some historical detestable individual or event and when they are continually presented togehter the public begins to pronounce guilt simply by the association of those two unrelated thoughts. The ability to lie by suggestion and hyperbole is indispensable to any group who would incite a population against a legitimate cause. Those who would gladly have British Columbians believe such foolishness in order to damage a responsible government should be more careful with their words for someday a man truly like Hitler could arise.

And by then they may have cried "wolf" once too often. Laurie Throness members of your com- tne city of Rome in the Con la ndtodMutlon dM munity who wish to help. VANCOUVER, B.C. The problem seems to be the Five Corners and its environs whether to have two-way streets one-way streets or noway streets. But let us forget the street matter and give our attention to the real Five Corners was placed in its present location by the pioneers, and such were notoriously ignorant of paved streets and motor cars. They had merit, we all agree, for they cut down the trees and planted potatoes among the tree stumps, and they took salmon from the river and ploughed them under to enrich the soil.

However, some one of our forefathers must have said, "Let us put the Five Corners at the Junction of Young Street North, Young Street year 336 A.u. (Encyclopedia Britannica, 1974 edition). My daughter sent me a letter with her children's school pictures. She had transposed two of the numbers (5 and 7) in the address. The letter was returned to her even though she had the correct postal code on the envelope. In the postal directory they showed this code for 22 numbers.

On our street the number seven that she transposed does not even exist. Why was it too much trouble for the post office to check the area code? With the high cost of postage today it would have only taken the postman a few seconds to realue that the area code was on the envelope and it could have been put in that areas box as I have lived at the same address (or 12 years.
