20 YEARS AGO the File* Of The Upper Des Moines-Hepublican Much 12, 1930 Algona was to have a new high school building! The vote was two to one in favor of the project, with 1253 ballots being cast. The building site was still in doubt, but the Athletic park, Bryant school grounds, and Central school grounds were favored lo- v cations. * * * A. E. Michel and Mrs. George St. John were reelected to the school boafd^at the same election. George Godfrey, one of Algona's master farmers, spoke to the Huron, S. D., Chamber of Commerce, telling them of farm problems. f Mr. and MM. J. P. Frakes celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary at Swea City. * « * Work had just started on a new bridge north of town on Highway 18. * * * , Mrs. G. W. Stillman won a permanent wave for offering the best name for the Marigold Beauty Shoppe II, run by Mrs. Edyth L. Dailey. * * * Wana Patterson, daughter of of Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Patterson, Algona, took first place in the county calf club contest by writing a story about the personal feelings of a young calf. * .* * Mrs. T. P. Harrington was elec- ed new president of P. E. O. Others elected were Mrs. S. j E. McMahon, vice-president; Miss Ella Thompson, recording secretary; and Mrs.'M. G. Norton, corresponding secretary. « * » A new car belonging to A. L. Daggy, LuVerne, was destroyed by fire when a can of gasoline overturned in the back seat and caught fire from the exhaust. * * * The tournament jinx, which had plagued the high school basketball team since 1916, showed up again when the local team lost to Britt in their first tournament came. Cliff and Hargreaves were forwards; Moore, center; Samp and Runchey, guards; and Mangan, Barr, Blossom, and D. Cowan, subs. Occupants of F. J. Weisbrod's car were cut on splinter6d glass when a pheasant, blinded by the car lights, crashed through the glass windshield, near Featon. • • » Mr. and Mrs. George W. Dale, Algona, celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. » • * Dennis Myers, Algona, received nearly a column in the Chicago Tribune in review of a speech he made on amateurism in college athletics. His car stalled, and when he cranked it, the car started forward, knocking him down, dragging him, and finally pinning him under it when it ran off the shoulder. * * • The 40 miles an hour speed limit for cars was abolished by the state legislature. Trucks still had speed limits depending on road limit and on whether they had pneumatic or solid rubber tires. * * * Hugh Haney and John Fraser. both candidate? for the republican nomination for supervisor in the first district, flipped a coin to see who should step out of the supervisor fight. Hugh lost and consequently withdrew his name. * * * Receiving gold A's for speech work at the high school were Donald Hutchins, Eleanor Backus, Frances Hough, Helen Morrow, Irrna Dee Roupe, Dorothy Sellstrom, Mary Adams, Burnetta Bonstetter, Christina Gould, Lor- ttta Howie, Eleanor Keen, Virginia Schnepf, Florence Dehnert, Lucille Black, Dorothy Simpson, Madonna Quinn, Harley Troutman, Dolores DeMott, Alberta Grosenbach, Wm. Cliff, Bob Cliff, and Agnes Brown. * 9 # Donald Bania, Tilonku, shot a fox that had climbed 30 feet up in a tree. Local hunters claimed it was a cross between a red and gray fox. * • • Walter Fraser was made life puard of the swimming pool for the coming summer. He was then a member of the Iowa Statt College swimming team. W. B. Poole was re-appointed attendant, and Hilda Ostrum, matron. * * * Emmetsburg Rotary members entertained the Algona Rotary club here. President A. L. Peterson, turned the meeting over to the visiting members for a program on France. * » • Mrs. Michael Koppen, 30. of Whittemore, died suddenly from pneumonia. * * # August Bremer. old-time Algona barber, bought the old Model Building occupied by Zender and Caldwell. He didn't state the price, but said it took a lot of dimes and quarters to pay for it. * • » The Algoaa Building and Loan reelected A. L. Peterson, president; Mrs. Susan Barry, vice- president; E. J. The Board of Supervisors of Kossuth County, Iowa, met pursuant to adjournment in regular ppsslon. There was present Supervisor H. S. Schepp- mann. Chairman in the Chair, and Supervisors S. D. McDonald. W. S. Cosgrove and A. M. Kollasch. Absent: Supervisor J. F. Qulnn. On motion Board adjourned to Court Room for Joint Drainage meeting with Emmtft County and Palo Alto County Boards of Supervisors. Motion made bv Koliasch and seconded by McDonald that the Board of Supervisors of Kossuth County, Iowa, adopt Resolution confirming r»-assess- mrnts on the following Joint Drainage Districts as acted on by the Joint Boards of Emmet County and Kossuth County and Emmet County. Palo Alto Countv and Kossuth County on January 0. 1950, and that said re-assessments be spread on the drainage tax lists and be collected with the 1943 taxes payable in 1950. Ayes: All. Nays: None.
