THURSDAY MORNING, MAY 27, 1920. THE NEWS AND OBSERVER 7 SORRY ROLE TAKEN BY UNITED STATES With China, Haiti and a Few Other Backward Lands Washes Hands of Treaty To the Editor: Does it not amuse the patriotic, progressive citizen to read this list of nations and states that have not ratified the League of Nations and Ecuador, Greece, Serb CroatSlovene State, Honduras, Nicaragua, Portugal, Rumania, Haiti, China and the United States! Glance over the list again and note particularly last three. Does that not give the American citizen a thrill? Now look at those countries and states that have ratified: Bolivia, Brazil, Belgium, Guatemala, Liberia, Panama, Peru, Poland, Siam, Uruguay, Czecho-Slovakia, France, Italy, Japan and Great Britain. Please observe that all five America's best chiefest Allies have ratified the League. Then, lastly, read the thirteen neu-1 trals that were invited to join the League, and that have done 80 already: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Venezuela, Paraguay, Persia, Salvador, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

And the following four states, not mentioned in the covenant, have asked admitted: San Marino, Georgia, Iceland and Luxembourg. Thirty-two countries and states already in the League! Eleven countries and states have refused to ratify it! The United States of America is in the minority. The model plank in the Republican national platform would unsex the covenant in order to save "the and the sovereignty and the future of this country." It would discount the opinion of exPresident Taft, Senator McCumber, hundreds of leading educators and university professors, Innumerable Americans possessed of wide experience capabilities, and all the Democratic supporters of the League everywhere. Behold their leader, the Honorable Hairsplitter Caption. Lodge, defiant, indifferent before the judgment of over two-score nations of the earth! What is worse, to be dragged in through force of circumstances, or join bravely, velcoming duty, aspiring heroically, serving divinely? Have not events in Europe proved already that they were right, those who actively supported the League as a structural and necessary part of the Treaty? What does the call of a million men mean in the ear of an enlightened nation like this? The dreadful story of raging epidemics--typhus, tubereulosis, smallpox and cholera--comes to us like the wise king's warning that "whoso stoppeth his cars at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

Appalling misery and dire need stalk up and down Central Europe, while in this country the pettifoggers and demagogues go forth gather their harvest of undeserved ballots cast by the unthinking' populace that allows the blatant pardireet its prejudices and passions. And America joins hands with the backwardness of China over the Not A Blemish mars the perfect appearance of her complexion. Permanent and temporary skin troubles are effectively concealed. We withdrew ourselves from the business of peace settlement and crawled away with our isolated position like a snail with its shell after it, commit suicide at home murder abroad. We have mocked God if we persist in this much longer and waste our substance in indecision and refuse to give in truth with all our hearts to alleviate the suffering peoples. What has America done towards ting the League into effect and planning its success! Has she helped as 3 member of the council! Is she a part of the assembly? Is she felt in the court of international justice? Would we be an influence through the international labor office, or not? Do we want to speak our sentiments through the international health office, or arrange for the reduction and regulation of armaments, and adjust the freedom of communicatic and transit, or protect minorities, participate In mandates, give voice on the Saar Valley question, the Danzig government, act in authority at international financial conferences, inspect the conditions of Russia, and bear our part of the budget of the League? What shall America do, wash her hands of the sordid world's misfortunes and calamities, Ir roll up her sleeves, turn under her collar and go to i in the fight for restoration and relief, just as she sent her sons to do?
