CHRISTOPHER LEHMANN-HAUPT NY Times News Service So after looking into the JonBenet Ramsey case for two years and conducting with his researcher Charles Brennan some 571 interviews with nearly 200 people does Lawrence Schiller about the 0 Simpson case) have any idea who killed the 6-year-old daughter of John and Patsy Ramsey? No Like the rest of us he a clue Or rather like the Boulder Colo police he has 1038 clues They point him to the conclusion that I know now with hard-earned certainty is that since I was not present when JonBenet was killed I have to question my right to offer an explanation a best guess or a likely scenario of the events of Dec 25-26 He continues: I find myself getting angry when I hear someone say did it because or did it you see Every time I hear yet another theory I understand all over again why I wrote this book I came to learn that I saw it as my job to find out as much as I could and therefore create the most accurate record available for Why then rush to print while the Boulder grand jury is still in session with a book so riddled with misprints that even an errata slip correcting about a third of them includes an erratum? Schiller did so for several reasons presumably: to fill the vacuum created by the ending of the impeachment trial To exploit the already intense public fascination with the case To feed the reader fresh information about the murder To clarify why the case has created so much turmoil in Boulder pitting the police against the district attorney and both against the press laying waste certain prominent careers and prompting suspicion that the wealthy Ramseys were being given privileged treatment All of which Murder Perfect assuredly accomplishes It reveals for instance that in the view of Linda -Hofftnann-Pugh the housekeeper the white blanket found wrapped around -body would have been available only to someone with detailed knowledge of the household It tells you that the police have established that four fibers found attached to the duct tape sealing the mouth of corpse matched those on a red-and-black checkerboard-design jacket that Patsy Ramsey had been wearing both the night before and in the morning (although Schiller quickly adds that in the opinion of one forensics expert fibers are not unique like fingerprints and that they could have been transferred from the coat to the tape indirectly) At the same time Schiller mdkes more understandable why the Ramseys were reluctant to cooperate with the investigation: he writes that the police after foiling to question John and Patsy formally during the first three days then tried to bully them by withholding their body from burial He laces in a broader context the ostility between the Boulder Police Department and Alex Hunter the Boulder County District Attorney: the police were -institutionally trained to press for convictions while Hunter attuned Ireland: Fact and Fiction Readers are blessed with remarkable books for this St Patrick's Day Irish Blessings A Photographic Courage Books $1998) By KEN MOORE Staff Writer If been looking all your life for a four-leaf clover you may have to settle instead for one or more Irish books that have been published just in time for St Day an assortment of titles to fit almost any taste The outstanding book however is Blessings: A Photographic a wonderfol high-quality 11- by 11-inch coffee table book with some 60 exquisite full-page color photographs each of which is described by accompanying Irish verse poetry and folk sayings Thus a foil-page photograph of a village pub is described on its facing page you always have a clean shirt a clear conscience and a guinea in your Another photo this one of a thatched-roof cottage is accompanied by the text you live as long as you want and never want as long as you difficult to imagine that more beautifol photographs of the Emerald Isle are possible than the ones pictured here Each page conveys blessings from the land of Eire Irish blessings capture the spirit and spirituality of Ireland through quotations of saints poets playwrights sages and songwriters This and other tomes from the'Philadelphia-based Courage Books are available in book stores or directly from the publisher by telephoning (800) 345-5359 I THE STREET LAWYER by John Grisham MandDeft $7 Aft (8) ft MOIOIRS OF A GEISHA by Arthur Goldan Vintage $14 (6) ft MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE by Nicholas Sparks Warner Vision (8) A BLACK AND BLUE by Arms QuMan Dell $750 (3) ft JEWE1 by Bret Lott Washington SquarePocket $14 (6) ft CHARMING BftLY by Alice McDermott Delta $1291 (7) 7 WHERE THE HEARTS by Billie Letts Warner $12 (12) ft THE READER by Bernhard Schlfnk Vintage $11(1) ft DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YAStSTOHOOD by Rebecca Weds Harper Perennial $1150 (56) 10 STORM OF THE CENTURY by Stephen King Pocket $11 (4) II THE NOTEBOOK by Nicholas Sparks Warner Vision (54) 1ft THE CAT WHO SANG FOR THE BIRDS by Lilian Jackson Braun Jove $699 (1) 1ft TOM NET FORCE created by Tom Clancy and Steve Pleczenik Berkeley $799 (8) 14 DEAD EVEN by Brad Meltzer Warner Vision $750 (3) 11 MIOWIVEft by Chris Botyatian Vintage $13(18) PAPERBACKS: NONFICTION 1 BITTER HARVEST by Am Rule Pocket $7Aft (4) ft TALNNG TO HEAVEN by James Van Praagh Signet $199 (2) ft THE PERFECT STORM by Sebastian Junger Harper Paperback $199(39) 4 ARE YOU SOMEBODY? by NuNa OTbotoki OwVHott $11 (7) ft OCTOBER SKY by Homer Htokam Jr MandDeft $199 (2) ft MTO THIN AIR by Jon Krakauer AnchorDoubleday $7 Aft (47) 7 UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN by France!
