St Church Shaftesbury for the funeral of Miss Mary Lavinia Young a former mayor of Shaftesbury who died at Salisbury Infirmary aged 74 The mourners included six former mayors of Shaftesbury representatives of many local organisations Canon and Mrs Douglas Caiger the Vicar of Shaftesbury who has recently retired and representatives of the nursing profession The service was conducted by the Rev John Morris the lesson was read by a cousin the Rev Ronald Churchill and prayers were said by Canon Caiger Miss Young was bom in Bimport Shaftesbury in 1911 the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Bennett Young for many years ironmongers in the High Street Nursing Following her education at Shaftesbury High School she left the town to begin her nursing career at the Glebrave Hospital for Children in London She devoted her life to caring for the sick serving at Kings College Hospital as assistant matron at Richmond and afterwards in a position of great responsibility as matron of Westminster Hospital London from 1951 to 1966 She was honoured by the Queen in 1967 receiving the OBE She also appeared on Roy Desert Island Discs programme on radio and her choice ui records spoke of her care for the sick and her deep Christian faith She retired from Westminster and returned to Shaftesbury to care for her father who was ill He died at the time of her retirement in 1966 She and Miss Kay Atkins Mr A CREMATION took place at Yeovil of Mr Albert Edward Pidgley aged 72 of 6 Castleton Terrace Sherborne who retired last year as stud groom of Sandley Stud Gillingham Born in Ringwood Mr Pidgley served in the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in India and Burma (14th Army) during the Second World War He had worked for Mr Simon Wingfield Digby at Sandley for many years The funeral service at the crematorium was conducted by Deaconess Diana Cherrett Family mourners were Mrs Nancy Pidgley wife: Miss Jean Pidgley daughter: Mr and Mrs Wheeler step-brother and sister-in-law
