Plant Plans Expansion In 1950; Near $1,000,000 Sales '49 The photo above shows the Algona plant of Sargent & Co., on east State street adjoining the Northwestern tracks. A new large storage wing will be constructed this year to the south of the plant, or at the left in photo- above. This storage wing will be 38x78 feet in size. Steel for the structure is already on the site. A smalt plane landed at Algona's municipal airport last Thursday afternoon. The pilot was the Mankato dfstributor for Sargent & Co., and being in need of 200 pounds of Calf Meal for a Minnesota customer, he had simply jumped into his plane, and flown down to fetch back the two sacks of feed. .Such happenings are somewhat com- fnonlptace,; however, to the Sargent & Co. plant here. Just a few weeks ago, Homer Anderson, local manager received a letter from a South Dakota rancher, asking for a certain type of sheep pellet that would lay on top of the snow and not crumble. In this case. Homer jumped into his car, drove to the South Dakota ranch, listened to the rancher's story— and in a couple of weeks two freight cars loaded with a special sheep pellet were dispatched to the rancher. This Sargent pellet is now being fed to 5,000 ewes on the 22,000 South Dakota ranch. Homer tells one interesting side-light in this connection, pertaining to the Indian sheep-herders who tend the flocks. They appear to like the pellets as much as the sheep, for they fill their pockets with them to munch on like candy. But the day in and day out business of this Algona plant is mainly taken up with production of forty different supplement feeds manufactured by Sargent & Co. The plant here had nearly $1,000,000 in sales last year, and has topped a million on several occasions. The Algona mill was established in 1939. J. R. Woodmansee was its first manager. Homer Anderson, present manager, has held that post for six years. Dick Johannsen is assistant manager. A crew of eight men is employed. At the present time, Sargent & Co., here is turning out about a carload of feeds a day. This output is made possi- ble-through the efficient use of modern equipment, which includes a $30,000 California pellet mill installed last year, a earn cracker and a large hammer mill. All the auxiliary equipment necessary for testing and processing is on hand at 'the local plant. ; To explain the processes of supplement-mixing and manufacturing, Mr. Miderson has in the course of time prepared elaborate charts which have found .wide use throughout the middle West. 'One of his charts is being used at a South Dakota vocational Ag school, another was used at the South Dakota State Fair, and one hangs on the wall of the home offices of the company in Des Moines. Sargent & Co., of Algona, is a branch plant of the parent company located in Des Moines. Other branch mills are located at Monmouth, III., Fremont, Nebr., and Waverly, Mo. The Algona plant, ^rnallest in floor area, turns out about !14% of all the feed produced by the company. The parent company was founded 62 years ago by E. I. Sargent, Sr. Today, three of his sons, E. I., A, E., and W. L. Sargent are in active charge of the affairs of the company. The comparative smallness of the local plant will, however, be changed this year with the erection of a 38x78 foot storage wing on the present plant. It is hoped that this new wing will help to care for most of the needs of the plant, but it is thought that further construction may be necessary. The feeds turned out at the Algona plant are distributed over a wide area, reaching through the Dakotas, into Minnesota and of course, Iowa. No stones are left unturned in the line of research to make Sargent Feeds the best that can be produced.
