Although reporters left by helicopter before the evacuation was complete, Joe Edwards of the Bahamas News Bureau in Nassau said, "I'm sure they will make sure that there are no Haitians left on the island, then proceed directly for Haiti." It was the second attempt to remove the Haitians, who have been on the island for 40 days. Bahamian authorities tried to convince the weakened Haitians to leave peacefully, but the castaways replied that they would rather die than return to Haiti. A dinghy then arrived carrying nine police officers who were armed with semi-automatic weapons. The Haitians were sitting in a circle with arms linked, refusing to budge. The police officers donned gas masks and chased reporters away.

The reporters watched from three chartered helicopters as the officers herded the Haitians onto a 130-foot government buoy tender, the Lady Moore. Two officers fell upon one Haitian man who refused to move, beating him on the head and shoulders with their nightsticks. "There was some initial resistance, some protests from the Haitians insisting that they be taken to Miami," Edwards said. "There were no injuries, and there were no shots fired." Eight Haitians ran for the ocean and reporters heard "cracks that sounded like rifle shots," according to Keay Davidson of the Orlando Sentinel Star. A Bahamian police officer pointed his rifle at the helicopters, 'and the pilots flew away before the evacuation was over.

Reporters agreed that no one among them saw shots fired or anyone injured other than the man who was beaten with nightsticks.
