In three other attempts the Yankee star rapped feebly into two double plays and struck out, each time with runners on base. A crowd of 34,379 saw a tight, well-played game, the second in a row in a series which had threatened to go into the books as possibly the worst ever. Barney, 22-year-old surprise starter for the Dodgers, gave up both Yankee scores before he had to be lifted Mn after DiMagio's blow, but he did well, considering everything. In the four and two-thirds innings he worked the young fire- bailer irsued nine walks, within one of the new World Series record set only yesterday by the ill-starred Bill Bevens of the Yanks, yet only one of them figured in the scoring against him. While the officials were calling out the chains to see if it was a first down, everybody seemed to get confused. The public address announced spieled off tht it was fourth down with six inches to go.

What the down box said, no one seems to know; in fact, no one could see it in the dim light and with the sidelines crowded to capacity as usual. Umpire Bus Bigham said after the game he thought it was third down, so did the press box scribblers. Coach Harold Hauk thought at first it was fourth down and sent in Instructions for a field goal try since there were but 25 seconds left. Before the kids could get the kick off, however, they were penalized five yards for taking too much time. By this time Hauk had discovered that it was third down, decided to try a couple of passes, and sent in the players to do it However, the Vikings had made up their minds to kick, and evidently afraid of another penalty, went right ahepd with their boot while the subs were running on to the field.

In the utter confusion that followed, Albany recovered the ball and held on to it until the end, the final tie resulting. Albany had all the better of it in yardage, making 256 yards and 15 first downs from rushing, to a total of 146 for Salem from passes and rushing and six first downs. However, the Bulldogs fumbled away two chances in the first half and when Salem, took quick advantage of a break and scored their seven it looked like the ball game until late in the final stanza. Jim Rock set up the score, intercepting a pass on the Albany 45 and running it back to the 35. Houck made 9 over right guard and then passed to Rock for 20 to the six yard line.

On the third crack at the line Houck scored and then booted the extra point. Albany kept' hammering away in the third and fourth stanzas until they finally lost the ball on the Salem 10. Houck kicked out to the 45 and Cliff Smith ran it back to the 35. Smith, 200-pound fullback.1 Dick Grabner, and Charles Keller, alternated in packing the ball until Grabner bulled over from the one on the ninth play. Lefty Bob Heins booted sure for the seventh and tieing point It was then that Salem made their spirited comeback that came so near to putting the game on the victory side of the ledger.
