Page 14, CLOVIS NEWS-JOURNAL, Sepl 20, 1974 Youngman book is a good bet By DON FREEMAN Copley News Service HOLLYWOOD "You are sitting at a bar and you'd really love to strike up a conversation with that beautiful blonde! You are trying to get that stone-faced buyer to smile at a business meeting! You are sitting at a dull party i at your own house, no less!) and you want everyone to know each other better! Or you are with the boys at the corner pub and you want to win a few free drinks. OK, Step in a bit closer. You came to the right place!" Thus writes Henny Youngman in the introduction to a book of his that has just landed in the shelves. It's called "Henny Youngman's Bar Bets, Bar Jokes, Bar Tricks" and if it doesn't fill a need then, in the words of George Gobel, an accordion player doesn't wear a ring. (Have you ever seen an accordion player who didn't wear the flashiest ring in town? It goes with a fast rendering of "Lady in When I last set eyes on Henny Youngman, about five months ago in New York, he was reveling in his new role as author and demonstrating some of the bar-bet tricks that would be in his book.

As everyone knows, a barbet is what brings you a free drink. A bar-bet is when you say, casually, "Reno is farther west than San Diego." After the bet is made, a map is consulted and the loser, suddenly all the wiser in his geography, is compelled to shell out. "Listen," says Henny, "I've been working in joints all over the country for over 40 years. I've heard every bar-bet there is. I've won some and I've lost some but I've remembered them all." Indeed he has, and as many as he can recall are included in this little volume.

Here's one Bet that you can make an egg float on water. When all bets are covered, put the egg in a glass of water and add plenty of salt until the egg rises naturally to the top. This one Henny calls the Strong Thumb, as follows: Have someone sit In a chair with his face looking up at the ceiling. Press your thumb hard on the center of his forehead above the bridge of the nose. Challenge him to rise out of the chair without using his hands.

It is quite difficult, if not impossible. "Some of them get rather tricky," Henny admits. "For instance, tell everyone to lay quarters heads down on a table. State that you are willing to pay a dime for every quarter whose date you can't name, sight unseen. "The more dates you fail to guess, the better you are.

Because at the end, you pick up the quarters one by one and hand each owner a dime instead. "If they should protest, you remind them that you said, "I will pay a dime for every quarter whose date I couldn't name. I'm paying dimes for I call this one the Money Maker." Another Youngman favorite he calls Fire and Water. "This is a can't-misser," he insists, i "Bet that you can make water run up hill. You pour water Into a plate.

Drop a burning piece of paper into a glass, and Immediately invert the glass with the burning paper, and put it mouth down into the water-filled plate. "As the flame goes out, a vacuum forms and pulls the water up into the glass!" The foregoing is, of course, just a sampling of the many wonders included, along with a liberal supply of typical Henny Youngman jokes. What's a typical Henny Youngman joke? This one is very typical: "A doctor gave a guy six months to live, and he didn't pay his bill. So the doctor gave him six more months." And: "Americans are getting stronger. Twenty years ago it took two people to carry $10 worth of groceries.

Today a 5-year-old does it." When I talked with Henny, the other day, he was in great spirits. He had come out to the Coast to do a Merv Griffin Show and he was still beaming over the success of the New York Telephone Dial-A-Joke service, which he inaugurated. "It was a big success," says Henny. "It started as a one- month experiment and it's still going strong, with other comics." An ingenious bit of gimmickry, this phone company recorded an endless number of jokes related by Youngman. Callers would dial a special number and receive three minutes of Youngman one- liners.

"I even did phone jokes," Henny says. "Man calls his broker on the phone. He says, 'What's the latest dope on Wall Street?" The broker says, 'My What's Known 9 rii Travels Tola AboutCancer? By KLEANOR B. KODGEKSON, M.D. Copley News Service What do we know about cancer of the uterus? A.

We do not know the cause, or causes, but we do know that: Promiscuous sexual relations are a factor. Early age and increased frequency of sexual relations have some significance. Early age for pregnancy may be important. Irregular bleeding and discharge may be signs of cancer. Women of all ages are susceptible to cancer of different types.

An early diagnosis usually means a cure. Cancer of the cervix the part of the uterus that extends into the vagina I is the most common pelvic cancer. The Pap smear helps rule out cancer of the cervix. The endometrial biopsy i a scraping of tissue from the lining of the uterus), or a curettage, helps rule out cancer of the body of the uterus. Cancer of the cervix occurs most often in women of the child-bearing years.

Cancer of the endometri- iini occurs most often near ami after the menopause. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity are often associated with cancer of the endometrium. Cancer is cured, or controlled, by surgery, irradiation, and chemical means. The number of children a woman has seems to make no difference in the development of cancer. Estrogens have not been shown to cause uterine cancer.

Are IQ's affected by birth-control pills? 1 mean, are babies born of mothers who took birth-control pills before their pregnancies just as intelligent as those who did not? A. A recent report from Puerto Rico where the birth control pills were first used, from 1961 on, tells of examinations of children born to mothers who took the first pills. These 5-8 year olds had the same test results as similar children born to mothers who took no birth-control pills. Therefore, it would seem that the eggs in the ovaries were unaffected, in an intelligence-measuring way, by the artificial hormones in the pills. Q.

Will an alcoholic mother have a normal baby? A. It appears to be definite that there is an increase in congenital anomalies like growth deficiencies, small heads, heart defects, joint problems in alcoholic mothers as compared with nonalcoholic mothers. Alcohol is, after all, a drug and one which can pass through the placenta (the attachment between mother and baby) and affect the baby. An additional difficulty in the raising of these children is that those brought up by alcoholic mothers do not do as well as those brought up by nonalcoholic. One could get into the question of why mothers are alcoholic in the first place.

Do they have more deficiencies, congenital anomalies, and are less able to cope with the world? They turn to alcohol for escape? Or what? We can at least say that the child, if born normal, is more likely lo be neglected if the mother is alcoholic. WASHINGTON (UPI) Henry A. Kissinger has flown an average of nearly 540 mile: a day on diplomatic missions since be became secretary state 12 months ago, according to figures released today by the State Deparlment. The department said Kissing er has logged a total of 196,555 miles in the air, only 23,435 them in domestic travel. Kissinger's travels as secre tary of state began last Octobe with a trip to Moscow, Tel and London and eventually too' him to a total of 28 countries.

D.C. The Indian desk, with an Indian director and Indian personnel would oversee programs designed to aid Indian veterans in the United States. Sid E. Cloquet, health administrator for Small Tribes Organization of Western Washington, defended creation of an Indian spite of the fact none exists for other minority groups. He said blacks, Chicanos and other minority groups are well integrated into the mainstream of society.

On the other hand, he said, "alcoholism is the worst thing that has come about in the Indian communities Indians are not they are rural, where they lack the ser- vices So we are in need of special solutions." The Indian desk resolution was one of six passed which carried the most emphasis. Others provided for establishment ol an affirmative action Indian hiring program, care and prevention programs for Indian alcoholics, more flexible eligibility procedures and detoxification programs near Indian communities. A sixth resolution urged the Veterans Administration "to seek urgently immediate legislative remedies from Congress.
