Leonard "Lenny" Willis has been named as running backs coach at the University of Illinois, it was announced Thursday by head football coach Lou Tepper. Willis has served since August of 1991 as assistant to the director of the Illinois Office of Minority Student Affairs.

"We talked to Lenny early in the interview process," Tepper said, "and kept comparing him to the other candidates, but he always remained at the top of the list." Willis, 38, has served on two different staffs for Coach Earle Bruce, first at Ohio State from 1985-87, than again at Colorado State from Dec. 1990 to August 1991. Both times he was Bruce's running backs coach. In between those two positions was a three-year stint at Boston College as running backs coach, from 1988-90. Prior to becoming a coach, Willis was a prep star at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C..

He first played football at Fairbury (Nebraska) Junior College (1972-73), where he earned junior college All-America acclaim as one of the nation's leading re turn specialists. From there, he went to Bruce's Ohio State team, where he was two-year starter at wide receiver (1974-75) and played in two Rose Bowl games. Willis also participated with th Ohio State track squad, earning All-Big Ten honors as a sprinter. Willis was then drafted by the NFL's Minnesota Vikings as a wide reciever and returr specialist, playing in 1976 and it the 1977 Super Bowl. He also played for Buffalo from 1977-81, and later with the USFL's Chicago and Arizona teams.
