-THE STATE REPUBLICAN- i JE FERSON CITY, MISSOURI. Subaarlptlon, $1.00 Pop Year, F. Q. Fulkeiiso.n, Business Manager, TuurstlBy, January 28, 1802. The victory won by Jefferson City in securing the Democratic Delegate convention that meets May 11th, means that Jefferson City can secure the nominating convention also if it goes after it.

Push the good work. CitiCAuo is a daisy. seems to get there with both feet every time. We wonder if Main street woiild kick a second time against street improvements? Kansas City did not got the democratic convention but it got some pretty good advertising. SrniNit time will llnd us in need of a park and the only one in sight should not be permitted to get away.

work to bo done will require much more time, than is generally believed, and it will likely require from fifty to sixty days In which to complete the work. The readjustment of the judicial circuits and the fixing of the salaries of the judges will require considerable lime and the congrcs sional redisricting is not such an easy matter considering the fact that the democrats want to make the ills tricts all safely democratic. There is nothing so consoling to the human heart, as a fat olllee, it fact poetically and democratically expressed. Sedama still thinks that her mud creek water would make wholesome food for the University students and it would be cheaper than board. Tut; republicans who have an eye on congressional districts to be made for them by the special session would do well to remember: Blessed is the man who expects nothing for he will get it.

CHILI. I'hd message of President Han I son to congress on tlio Chilian ques tion met with our highest expectation in point of patriotism and true Americanism. The prompt offers of tho southern boys coming as they did from Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and Georgia, extreme southern states, to fight for the flag, was gratifying. In limes of trouble we are one people and one party. It is clear to every one that the sons of the o.d confederate soldiers, will bo in tho front of tho fray whenever trouble over takes us.

The late intelligence that Chill had stir rendered will save us the trouble of bringing "about that result by force, We congratulate the president and Mr. Blaine on the splendid tormina- tion of tho affair. I ho excitement did the country good. Ox with the march to our glorious destiny. A railroad to the south would make Jefferson City the great commercial and manufacturing city of the Oaage Valley.

The river route is again exhibiting signs of life: "Handle It tenderly rashioncilso tleuderly" it might go and die again. The people of Jefferson are united on one thing and that is the desire for the future prosperity of this growing and beautiful city. All hands to the wheel and give her a push. If we don't go to war with Chili wo have gained knowledge of an important fact, to 'Jci. n.t.- do not consider our navy strong enough to fight even one, of the smallest nations of the earth.

Where would we be if Germany, France or England should get after us? The democratic rice for governor this year is confined to scrub oaks, up to this writing. One of the lessons that the democracy must learn is that just so long as a "ycllar" dog can be elected to a state olllcc if placed on the democratic ticket, just so long will the scrubs monopolize the high places. We don't expect tlic olllee-seeker to agree with us in this, but wo do thiuk that the honest democrat who cares nothing for olllee ought to sec the evil and help correct it. Wi: note that the Dtille Milling company intend to eicct an elevator lor the storage of gram. I Ins is a move in the right direction and tills a long felt want.

Jefferson City keeps moving to tho front ami it won ue long before will be occupying complimentary re served scats with all the other great cities in the country, while Sedalia will continue in her attempt to embezzle state institutions from other cities in the hope of securing recognition. EL EE T1X FOR TUXES. Leaves have their time to fall and so have cither things. The fickleness of fortune is only surpassed by the surprises that it leaves behind. Nothing tells the tail of sorrow like the sheriff's hammer.

We see the world bow to the rising son to speed the departing brother. We hear the soft voice of the fair one bidding a cold adieu that she may extend a warmer welcome to tha new. But the world moves on relentless and oblivious of it all. A few years ago Dr. Morrison Mumford, of the Kansas City Times, was one of the rising stars in this western city.

Popular, worthy, and enterprising, lie had built up a name and a fortune that seemed anchored to the rock of ages. But it Hew like a meteor and the sequel is told by his retirement from the Time. His fortune was swept away by the boom and to-day he is a financial wicck. It leaves a lesson, but none will profit by it. We profit only by our own experiences, so the lesson is lost.

But it impresses one thing that there arc other things worth striving for besides money. We hope that the city council will devote its attention to the question of a creek sewer. The whole people will rise up and call them blessed if they will just do that one tiling this year. Tho fact is that a creek sewer solves tho whole sewer.igc question for this city and the whole, city can be united on making this cicck sewer the general newer for the city and the sewer lax can be paid say in three or four annual payments. The Oild Fellows and Muions are both having trouble with the insur- aucc societies, that have so long and creditably prospered in those orders The membership is not large enougl and the assessments so high that both lodges have about decided to let Hie insurance feature be discontinued While tint will be a great disappoint.

ruer.t to those iyho have for twenty ytors contributed maintain their insurance, yet, if tUe higii standard of credit heretofore enjoyed an fiol he maintained, it will no loubtbe to ttiu interest of the lodges to tinuc the insurance feature. JOXliRESSKlX.iL llEAPl'OItTIOX-31 EXT. The special session of the legislature will have an opportunity to distinguish itself by doing the fair thing for the republican voters in the state. The anomalous condition of affairs to-day in that line is such that these republican voters in Missouri, have not a single republican representative to represent them in congress, while the 280,000 democrats have or one congressman for every 13,000 voters. It can not be possible that the good of the whole can be subserved by any such legerdemain and jugglery as that.

Think of it that republicans in tliii stale have not even one congressman while democrats have l.i. And all of this injustice is due to the unfair and intentional meaiiucits of the men whom the republicans icstored to the right of citizenship abiut the year 1870. It leininds one of Scdalla. That's about the way we would exptct to bo treated if we did her favor. But this legislature may redeem itself and if it docs we will forget the vil lainy of the past and rejoice that usticc has come nt last.

It docs look as if one congressman for every 18,000 democrats and none tor 250, 000 republicans is over doing the tiling and they may see it. If they don't It will be because they are still wedded to their idol of injustice that is for eveimoro waived at Hie topmost pinnacle of tlipir banner. To be candid, wc ixpect liltj.e, anJ ittic should bo expected from gimb-i lelhole statesmen. But it will only he another nail, and mnny are being driven into the dunccratic carcass. Francis was a minority governor, and there is r.o certainty that the next one will do a well as lie.

Those that listen not must fuel and if liier can feel nothing else they will the meat ax when it falls on their necks. While there is no reason to believe that the legislature will continue In -Session for seventy dsys, yet the abiding place, than in organizations where older men dominate and uso it for selfish and political ends. In other words, the work of trying to do tho party good is usurped hy those who desire to promote their own selfish cuds. A club in order to be useful and a benefit to a party must be club for principles and not for spoils. As soon as it is used to promote the selfish ends of any one or any set of men, just that soon its power as an organization for general good is lost.

And it is clear that that would bo the result. Men who fight the political battles of any community want to do it on principles and not to promote the interest of some self appointed ofllceseeker. The good work of clubs Is recognized and it can bo noted that the good work always declines when some one goes to work to use it to promote, his own interest, or tho interest of some special favorite. For this reason one of the cardinal ptin-ciplcs every club should be to expel-any member who is trying to use it for such purposes. Where a club is organized to promote the political interests of a presidential or guber natorial candidate It is of course, different, as in such case that is the particular object sought, but where the club is for the good of the whole party, then it is deatli to it to sub vert its real purpose, to the promotion of some particular ofllceseeker.

These suggestions are prompted by the fact that the campaign will soon be on and clubs must be organized if we intend to make any kind of a light for our rights. If clubs are organized all over this state with but a single object, and that to dethrone the democratic party the result will surprise the democrats and even the republicans. Wc want to sec clubs organized every where and wc want to keep them in tho right path in order to enable thcin to do tho good that within them lies.
