MEMPHIS PRESS-SCIMITAR SATURDAY JULY 20 1974 PAGE 10 SAY AH! By Reamer Keller Acupuncture Is Branded As Worthless BV SCRIPPS-HOWARD NEWSPAPERS WASHINGTON One of the nation's most prestigious organizations of ear nose and throat physicians has branded acupuncture as worthless as a treatment or cure for deafness the illness many acupuncturists claim they can treat successfully above all others In a scathing denunciation of the controversial needle treatments the American Council of Otolaryngology said it has found no evidence acupuncture ever has restored hearing to a deaf person or even significantly improved impaired hearing The council based its conclusions on studies of effect on deafness carried out by New York Washington Boston and Baltimore ear specialists and a survey of 206 ear nose and throat clinics around nation which either tried the needle treatments or checked patients receiving them None reported finding significant improvement in any deaf patient Additionally one of the ear nose and throat physicians studied the results of acupuncture treatments on 66 persons treated by a Washington acupuncture center None showed any significant improvement Dear The doctor said not due to make a mad ruh to the hospital for a month Parents Convicted In Diabetic Death SAN BERNARDINO Calif (AP) just glad I have Jesus Christ to lean on" says Lawrence Parker whose diabetic son died after Parker and his wife withheld insulin from the lad on religious grounds Parker 35 and his 30-year-old wife Alice stand convicted of child abuse and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Wesley Parker 11 A Superior Court jury of 10 women and two men which had deliberated since July 11 returned the verdicts Friday against the Parkers of Barstow Calif Prosecutors charged that Parker and his wife threw away insulin because they believed he would be healed by faith He died three days later on Aug 22 1973 The parents reluctantly allowed their son to be embalmed but refused to attend his funeral saying they believed he would be resurrected Sentencing and hearing of motions for a new trial were set for Sept 3 The maxi-mum sentence for manslaughter is 15 years and for felony child abuse 1 to 10 years Parker an aerospace worker and his wife are members of the First Assembly of God Church in Barstow a Pentecostal sect which believes in divine healing They have three other children The attorneys contended that the couple made an honest mistake based on strong religious beliefs Deputy Dist Atty Lou Glazier told jurors evidence has shown that these parents by their failure to provide insulin killed their son just as surely and certainly as the sun will come up Mid-South Deaths TENNESSEE BOLIVAR Morvln LaCroIx re- VTff cannery employe husband of Mrs Mavis LaCroIx and brother of At en LoCroIx and Mrs Velma Cold-well both Military Airlift Group based at Memphis International Airport expects to receive the first of eight new C130 aircraft within a month Lt Col Ben Cole unit commander said today The four-engine turboprop planes which replace a iike number of larger but slower C124s will be sent to Memphis as part of a mission change for the unit Cole said the unit will be redesignated the 164th Tactical Airlift Group and will be transferred from the Military Airlift Command to the Tactical Airlift Command at Langley Air Force Base Va The change in aircraft and mission Cole said will eventually result in an overall decrease in about 206 Air Guardsmen in the nearly 1000-man unit He said the manpower authorization will be decreased by 218 flight and ground crew members and will be increased to include 12 technicians primarily jet engine mechanics "Some of the 218 people will be absorbed into other ANG organizations and some will retrain for new jobs in our Cole said we expect to lose some personnel through normal attrition be overmanned for a while but we just recruit as Cole said the change in aircraft and mission was "made earlier than originally planned due to the recent unexpected grounding of all but a few Air Guard The groundings were a result of bolt holes in the lower wing he said Although Cole said no aircraft crashes were caused by the metal fatigue in the C124s the ANG considered the problem too widespread and expensive to correct in such old aircraft The mission as a tactical unit will invilve air support of ground combat troops through air drops of cargo and paratroopers for the new mission will begin as soon as we get our first Cole said crewmen will train at Ellington AFB in Houston navigators and loadmasters will train at Little Rock AFB Ark ground crews will go to school in Minneapolis Minn Others will be trained locally in the unit is excited about the C130 he said new mission will give us more of an immediate sense of accomplishment and furnish a spirit of competition with other He explained that the 164th will be periodically involved in competition with other units to see can drop cargo or people at the right point at the right The C130s which are pressurized have an altitude capability of 20000 to 30000 feet and can fly at speeds bf 330 to 350 mph Cole said Truck Driver Fatally Hurt The traffic toll in Memphis for this year has reached 48 with
