takes two attendants to give Miss Boyett a bath the only 30 minutes she spends outside the lung each day At times her bath must be broken up into two sessions because her breathing becomes so erratic she must be returned to the lung to stabilize Today there is an even more serious crisis in Miu life Her father Lynn Boyett 67 a retired farmer is critically ill at St Francis Hospital in Memphis with a rare lung disease known Hyman-Reich Syndrome Mrs Giles said It began with a cold and eventually wu diagnosed the rare ailment Yet Boyett never smoked nor did he ever work around dangerous chemicals Her father hu devoted his entire life to his invalid daughter He built their home around her handicap in an effort to make it easier to care for her It still takes an attendant full time in addition to her father to care for Miu Boyett and help is getting Increasingly hard to find With the steadily Increasing minimum wage it also is becoming almost Impossible to afford Her mother Mrs Janie Somers of Dyer who is 62 and in poor health is staying in the home with her daughter while her former husband is hospitalized A nursing home is the obvious answer for Miu Boyett who receives both Medicare and Medicaid But so far family and friends have not found a nursing home facility which will accept an iron lung patient In 1976 Boyett bought his daughter her first Citizen Band radio to try to bring the outside world in to her Today she spends much 16 hours a day talking to her trucker friends under the CB handle "Pony Tail" chosen because that is the way she wears her hair In 1977 Boyett purchased a motor home and rigged up an auxiliary lung which enabled them to leave the house for short periods She loves to talk on the phone and hu a special headset to permit her to talk but she is unable to dial or pick up the receiver Someone hu to push the buttons for her since she is totally paralyzed on the left side and hu only minimal hand and foot movement on the right side 1 Despite her
