both to the members and invited guests The smoker was in the new club rooms at the corner of Intendencia and Bay len streets where spacious apartments have been secured About sixty members and fully forty invited guests were presentand it was past midnight before the crowd left for their home Lunches suitable refreshments and cigars were passed around and thoroughly enjoyed while those present listened to some splendid music rendered by the orchestra under the leadership of Prof Ehlers of the navy yard The violin solo by Prof Heygster formerly of Gimores band was excellent as was also the selection by Carl Heinrich on the Xylophone The comic selection of the master of the German steamer Prodentia was greatly enjoyed President Morris Dannheisser delivered the welcome address and Jas Landrum made an address Addresses were also delivered by Mr Alberts Guss Riss Teo Weber and Rolfs Willie Vokamp was in charge of the refreshments and was very popular with the members and guests The event was a most enjoyable one and the Germania Club which has already reached a high standard proposes continuing these entertainments CITY COUNCIL fAllEa TO MEET No Session Held Last Night As No Quorum Was PresentS The council meeting scheduled for last evening failed from lack of a quorum and adjournment was ordered till II a JTQ today when it is expected the city ticket will be completed and arrangements made for holding the election such as naming clerks inspectors etc The republicans have decided to put out a candidate for mayor one member of the Board of Public Works and for buildin Inspector RIx Robinson whl stand for mayor Bingham for member of the Board of Public Works and JasF Stearns for building inspector The republican candidates have decided to waive the right to Springs May HProf Charles Lane preached at the Southern Methodist church Sunday both morning and evening Monday night he gave a splendid lecture at the auditorium which was well atteuded The proceeds high school last week BOCAS DEL TORO FIRE WAS INCENDIARY By Associated Press Mobile May Information received here says that the fire at Bocas Del Toro which destroyed three blocks of store buildings COMMISSIONER 15 ARRESTED But Not in Connection With Any Affairs Connected With Board In the Criminal Court yesterday afternoon Solicitor Loftin filed an information against A Wiggins a former member of the Board of County Commissioners and Bard Tucker Both were in the court room during the day and surrendered to the sheriff The information is not in connection with any affairs of the board during Mr Wiggins tenure of office officThere There Is but one information against both parties but it contains four counts The first charged them with conspiracy to commit an assault upon one Chas Liscoe The second count charges carrying concealed weapons the third exhibiting a weapon in a threatening manner and the fourth with conspiracy to impersonate a deputy sheriff The bonds of the two were placed at 250 each which were furnished during the afternoon It is alleged that the crimes charged were committed several months since when Mr Wiggins was a member of the board Other Cases Alice Dugo was found guilty of petit larceny and sentenced to serve six months In jail Jake Pryor was found guilty of maliciously injuring a dwelling house and was fined 15 and costs or to serve 60 days Harry Mason was found guilty of aggravated assault and fined 50 and costs or four months in jail Joe Williams was sentenced to pay a fine of 50 or serve four months in jail for petit larceny and Ed Adams for assault and battery 25 or serve three months The two latter pleaded guilty CONVICTED OF RAISING A BIll I Negro Who Made 2 Certificate Look Like 20 is Found Guilty Fred Nobles a negro who has the appearance of being an artist in raining money or rather increasing the amount of a silver certificate was arraigned in the United States court yesterday and convicted upon the charge of having raised a 2 silver certificate until it had the appearance of a 20 certificate The bad money was in evidence in court and showed that whoever did the work had a knowledge of that class of workman hin necessary to Increase the purchasing power of silver certificates Nobles was arrested in the city several months ago He was employed as a laborer on a building under construction and was practically stranger here Going into a saloon on Tarragona street it is alleged that he presented the 20 raised certificate and after making a small purchase secured the change and left The bartender remembered him however and when it was discovered that the certificate had been raised from 2 to 20 he was located and arrested Other Cases Browneil charged with illicit distilling Holmes county was tried and acquitted Bird Little pleaded guilty to conducting an aillicit still in Holmes county and was fined 25 Peter Finch colored pleaded guilty to the same charge only he operated In Jackson county and was fined 25 The grand jury investigated a number of cases during the day and returned six indictments 2 KILLED IN WATER TANK EXPLOSION Haverhill Mass May 1tB ar explosion of the water tank at the bottling works if Smith this afternoon two men were killed and a third was seriously injured CUUNCll HELD A SPECIAL SESSION At Noon Yesterday and Took Steps Regarding the City Deposits A special meeting of the City Council was held yesterday at noon with Mayor Pro Tem Maura presiding The meeting was for the purpose of considering the bill introduced in the legislature providing for the placing of city money in whatever bank that might give the highest rate of interest for these deposits The council objected to some of the provisions of this measure and it was the consensus of opinion that it would be a detriment to the city The bill was published in The Journal Sunday morning and it was the first time that the councilmen became acquainted with all its provisions After some discussion a bill was presented which was more satisfactory and this was adopted with the request that it be taken to Tallahassee by Alderman Yonge and the representatives there requested to substitute it for the one now before the legislature Alderman Yonge left yesterday afternoon for Tallahassee carrying with him the proposed measure and also a copy of tae proceedings of the council The Other Meeting Owing to the fact that the Republican party was not prepared to submit the names of its nominees for the various city offices to be voted on June 4 the council agreed to meet again CREATING A CD 1 CoiJRT Pensacola Bar Association Believes Measure to be a Good One At a meeting of the Pensacola Bar Association held yesterday afternoon in the office of President John Avery the bill which has been introduced in the legislature to create what is to be known as a county court in Escambia county was approved and the representatives from this county will be asked to support the same It provides that a court having jurisdiction to hear suits not exceeding 500 shall be established in this county to relieve the docket of the circuit court Three terms each year uo to be held It names the county I judge as cxofficio judge of the court and the clerk of the criminal court as exofficio clerk As the measure is purely a local one and has the endorsement of the Pensacola bar it is probable that it will become a law SEELY WILL BE AN INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE Seely a carpenter is authority for the statement that he will boa i candidate for the position of building inspector running independent against the nominees of the Democratic and Republican parties He is circulating a petition securing the requisite number of signatures to have his name placed upon the ticket to he voted WOMAN IN ulsi COURT FOR DISTilliNG Pleaded Guilty to the Charge and Was Fined One Cent Martha Gilmore an aged white woman from Washington county was arraigned in the United States court yesterday morning upon the charge of illicit distilling or in other words making what is commonly called moonshine whiskey The woman when she appeared before the court entered a plea of guilty to the charge and told a pitiful story She appeared to be about 65 years of age and said she was the sole support of an aged mother and a number of small children and her only means of support for this family was by hard labor The woman asked for mercy at the hands of the court and said she acknowledged having made the moonshine and was guilty of the charge brought against her Judge Swayne after hearing the story admonished the woman regarding illicit distilling and told her it was against the laws to do so and for her not to return again to the court upon the charge She was then fined one cent and allowed to stopping at Milton on route where he will spend a short time with his constituents in that county Mr Lamar came to Pensacola upon invitation and delivered an address at the annual Ferry Pass picnic
