different from those of last year bnt are abont the same size and shape Bays a writer the Boston Herald The eccentrio shapes are never considered very good form and are only a fad which as a rule most women do not Indulge in Those of this year have sometimes two materials For instance the center part will be of silk or satin then will come an insertion of folds of chiffon then a band of the thick material and a ruffle of the chiffon It is claimed that this fashion of having the center of the thick goods shades tho eyes sufficiently and then that the shadows cast by having alternate stripes of satin and chiffon make them very becoming to the complexion Black and white parasols are exceedingly smart Not the black and white material so much as tho black trimmed with white although qnite a number I of black and white stripes are made up and black and white brocades in fancy designs and trimmed with ruffles ol black lace seem to meet with general favor The black satin with broad designs of coarse white lace and deep ruffles of the same lace are very smart indeed The advantage of this style of parasol is that it can be worn with a gown of any color and look well black and white being permissible with everything The ruffles of lace and chiffon add greatly to the beauty of any parasol but they do prove troublesome fw anything that is in daily use and are of course entirely out of place with a tailor made gown or any walking costume The fancy pompadour silks are mad up into exceedingly dainty parasols These come with blue pink yellow or white ground with the sprays of flowers embroidered on them Sometimes they are made up with lace ruffles but again are perfectly plain The handles are of whitewood and there is a big bow on top They are extremely reasonable in price considering their beauty and can be bought as low as 6 Indeed all parasols are much cheaper this sea here are often good fasnlons growing out of national disasters At the time of the French revolution the style of wearing the hair high on the head was begun and was designated as a la guillotine Apropos of this the fashion of the present has entirely done away with the idea that one must appear in afresh toilet every time one goes to a function of any sort Mrs Cleveland and tho ladies of the cabinet set the admirable example last winter of wearing the same gown as often as the humor dictated At the White House receptions Mrs Olney Mrs Carlisle and indeed all of the cabinet ladies have worn tho came gown more than once and have even resuscitated the toilets of last year and subjected them to some brightening up and alteration which though perhaps not apparent to the ordinary observer has not escaped the eye of those who know tho gowns and the women well It is now qnite allowable for a society writer to state that Mrs Blank en blink wore her most becoming gown and to describe the familiar toilet 3 mop nr tv Washington Capital What a Prominent Insurance JUan I Havs Blossom senior Labor as Much us Flno Frenzy Factor In Its Production There are yet some persons left who fancy that poetry is the product of a fine frenzy that the poet genius awake from a sublimated cataleptic trance to fill page after page with effortless beatitudes A number of manuscript I sheets of Longfellows Excelsior which maybe found in Harvard should not only explode this theory but give hope to many a discouraged amateur As Longfellow first constructed the first verse of this poem it ran The shades of night were railing fast As through an Alpine village passed A youth who as the peasants sung Responded in an unknown tongue Excelsior This was manifestly weak as tto only obvious reason why the Alpine peasants sung was that they might afford a rhyme for the youths response in an unknown tongue A second trial at the verse however not only failed to improve it but arranged it in such form that it is difficult to believe Longfellow guilty of the fault The last two lines of the verse were made to read A youth who bore a pearl of price A banner with the strange device There are not many even among the magazine poets of today who would consent to refer to a banner as a pearl of price But the poet had by this time three lines to his liking and the substitution of a youth who bore mid snow and ice completed the verse as it has been read and spoken throughout the length and breadth of the land all of which goes to show that the genius of the poet is in the conception and that the production of the poem being quite another matter lies solely in the direction of patient labor Chicago Herald Charmed by a Snake Snakes travel a good deal on their reputation They scare birds and small animals so they become helpless Wear know this to be a fact And then when they get in a tight place with a man they try to run a bluff on him A lawyer in our town once met A rattlesnake down in the Ozarks and began to experiment or rather to let tho snake experiment I to see if there was anything in the snake charming theory Fj said that the snakes eyes got brighter and brighter and his scales became glistening and his body seemed to swell up a little thicker and the whole outfit became so engrossing that he finally ran away from the snake in a dead scare and didnt get over it for a good while after He told me that it was his belief that if he had kept company with thai make much longer he would have loss hia wits Fsurest and Stream Dr Prices Cregro Baking Powder Awwfc4 Odd Msd JSUwfat Fair Io Jc THE FATAL THIRTEEN 4 Story Which Dray Not Bo True That Will Be Food For tho Superstitious Thirteen members of the Sprudol fishing club of Buffalo defied the old superstition ono sultry day last August embarked in a yacht belonging to one of the party and made a day of it down
