DECATUR SUNDAY HERALD AND REVIEW 51; Decatur, Illinois, Sunday, September 10, 1976 Community Backs Homestead Restoration Goodee Montgomery Became Stage Success The new Montgomery and Stone were females. Goodee Montgomery teamed up with Dorothy Stone to recreate the team once made famous by Goodee's uncle and Dorothy's father. Decatur Diary The Homestead is currently being used by a Richland Com-munity College class, a needlepoint shop is housed therein, and as work continues to progress will be available for meetings and other community use. Her other film credits included "Charlie Chan Carries On," "Body and Soul" and "Wicked." In the early 1930's Montgomery and Stone were back in business, only this time it was a slightly different version. and then moved to sketches with small parts until she finally rated special lines and was described as a "hit" in many New York papers. New York became Goodee's home although she spent her free weekends and summers at the Fred Stone ranch near Amityville. Stone was her uncle's dancing partner. She played in "The Yankee Prince" and "Pep and Personality" in Chicago in 1926.

Following the production Goodee's mother visited Decatur and reported "Goodee dances several different dances and appeared in extremely clever costumes she was a hit." About this time she joined up with John Brooks and his orchestra, being the only female in a cast with 11 men. They traveled as "specialty acts" and one of their engagements was at the Kit Kat Klub in London, England. In 1930 she came back to Decatur to appear in a play called "Up the River," a prison satire, at the Lincoln Theatre. In 1931 she began her film career in with Will Rogers. Many Decatur residents rushed to the theatre, but Classified Ads Bring Buyers Fast By Paula Buck Virginia Lawhead was not a "typical child." Her father, Rex Lawhead, was manager of the Lincoln Square Theatre, who at the time booked shows much like those seen in Sullivan at the Little Theatre.

Her mother could have been called a "stage mother." And her famous uncle, Dave Montgomery, was a partner in a team known nationwide in vaudeville as "Montgomery and Stone." And then there was Virginia herself, whose talents set her apart from the "typical" classification. It was these talents that attracted the interest of Virginia's grade school principal, Miss Jane MacMillan, when Virginia was a student at Decatur's Gastman School. Miss MacMillan noted that Virginia was talented in art, particularly needlepoint, and foresaw a career in commercial art for her student. But Virginia, who had been taking dancing lessons from Miss Annette Van Dyke at the Decatur Musical College, had other ideas. She chose the stage and with it the name Goodee Montgomery.

Virginia's parents had separated when she was 15 and Montgomery was her mother's maiden name. Goodee was her favorite uncle's pet name for her. In the fall of 1922 Goodee and her mother set off for New York City where Goodee continued her dancing. In December of 1923 Goodee received a notice to appear in the spectacular "Ziegfeld Follies." She started out in the chorus we know of our tremendous increase in social problems such as venereal disease, abortion, illegitimacy and sex crimes indicate a corresponding increase in promiscuous sex as promoted and glorified by pornography in all 'ts forms. With this we like to remind our City Council members to aid our fighting prosecutors and provide this community with a strong civil nuisance ordinance aimed at porno outlets, and be reassured that this community itself has that right and exercises that right through enforcement of obscenity laws.

Therefore we are extremely proud that our state's attorney's office has taken the initiative that will provide the most efficacious solution to the obscenity problem in our community. Such laws are intended to protect the public morality and safeguard the essential ele-' ment of society the family. Congratulations to our state's attorney Basil G. Lorraine Lathrop. Her letter imagining that other people want to regulate her sex life was a masterpiece worthy of a political speechwriter. She threw up a beautiful snowjob. But it was obvious, even with her verbal sleight of hand, that she was trying to distract our attention from the central issue. The point she so gingerly sidestepped with her flimflam about "celibacy, marrying and burning and Russian roulette" is that the issue is not sex at all, it's human life.

Nobody is plotting against her sex life. Nobody much cares about her sex life. She must live with the results of it. It's only when her (or anyone's) sex life results in the in-ception of another human being's life that the antiabor-tion lobby speaks up for that person's rights to live life, to dream dreams and imagine things the way Ms. Lathrop does.

Mary Ward Jo Coleman Open House Chairmen Decatur Inconsistency By Carter To the Editor: I'm beginning to see what people mean when they say Carter is inconsistent if he finds it possible to forgive adultery, but finds it impossible to forgive prejudice.

(For surely one is as unconsciously ingrained in a personality as the other, and Butz' jab-bermouthy is no less nor more of a sin than lust). I'm beginning to worry that Carter's presidency might be marked by politics-of-the-mo-menit it feels right, do and I can see him ending up like the hero-president of the book "Come Ninevah, Come Tyre" who stands at the White House window as bombs rain down on New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and the coastlines saying, "I thought if I was good they would be good." It also proves to me how insulated the Washington crowd and media are from the feelings of average America when they can make so much out of the tattlings of John Dean and a magazine like Rolling Stone. To me John Dean will always be "the dirty little coward who shot Mr. and I can't help thinking it is less evil to do wrong and be called to account for it than to do wrong, tattle about it, and get paid for it. Harvey Decatur We Need Statesmen To the Editor: As I see it, it makes little difference to the working class of people whether Ford or Carter is elected to the presidency in the upcoming election as long as the socialistic trend continues in government, destroying the incentive to work and earn by easily obtained unemploy-ment compensation, food stamps and welfare checks for those who are careful not to acquire any assets or resources. Most of this takes place, as we well know, at the expense of the workers who pay taxes and are self-supporting while hoping in vain for a break for themselves. A government half democratic and half socialist cannot be a success as it will in time destroy itself by its own indebtedness, which seems to be happening to us. We need more dedicated statesmen to vote for, not just mere politicians who seek votes at any cost. Henry W.
