we returned to the US the romantic novel genre was undergoing an explosion and I was very lucky I wrote Golden and Popular Library bought it and my next book as well That first novel was not very good and I be as El Paso was just a whistle stop for the 20th Century" judging from the half-filled Civic Center Theater Wednesday It was a mixed bag of onlookers but comments overheard on leaving indicated that most of them enjoyed the touring musical whether they were old loyal fans of Imogene Coca and Frank Gorshin or younger supporters of the Sunturian project Since there aren't any big hit songs to remember from the Broadway show that copped a Tony back in 1978 and the story is pretty thin it's the costumes the clever sets and the inspired choreography that keep this production on track It might even be asked why bring a relatively unfamiliar musical to this traditionally tough theatrical climate By taking the 20th the Sunturians will be allowed to have in about a year and a half when it is released for short runs across the country The performance lasted until almost 11 pm Part of the length was due to a 15-minute delay in starting because one of the stars Judy Kaye was ill and her understudy Alexana Ryer took over the role of Lily Garland a reigning stage star Although some were disappointed at not seeing Kaye the luscious Ryer filled out the role and the 1930s gowns
