title-holders ha'jo been crowned in all eight of the country's major football groups or conferences and the prize award of all, tho national championship, hangs on the New Year's day clash between Tulane and Southern California in the Rose Bowl January 1. Four sectional champions of 1930 repeated this year, either outright or partially, Tulane, which shared the Southern conference crown with Alabama a year ago, finished all alone at the top this year, unbeaten and untied in 11 games. Northwestern and Michigan which tied for the Big Ten title In 1830, gained a third share with Purdue tills season. Utah and Drake again won the Rocky Mountain and Mis- souri Valley conference championships outright. Of the four new champions crowned, Southern MVthodlst replaced Texas in the Southwest; Southern California ousted Washington State on the Pacific Coast, and Nebraska dethroned Kansas in the Big Six.

In the east, where no generally recognized champion can be expected, Bucknell finished with the best record this season. In the slim schedule this week two games stand out. Army and Navy will renew their ancient rivalry in the Yankee Stadium Saturday for the benefit of the unemployed. At Los Angeles, Southern California, making its last stand before the Rose Bowl game, will tackle the powerful Georgia Bulldogs. HOW TO GO CRAZY Figures, of course, do not He- much.

And it was on the basis of figures we had been thinking Southern California would beat Tulane. It seems, however, that Tulane Is 104 points better than the Trojans. Here's how i' works: Tulane beat Vanderbiit by 19 poiii'ls. VandirbiH defeated Ohio Stale by 5 points. Ohio State bested Michigan by 13 points.

Michigan outdid Wisconsin by 16 points Wisconsin was 7 points better than Purdue and Purdue was that many points better than Northwestern. Northwestern beat the University el California at Los Angeles by 19 points. U. C. L.

A. beat St. Mary's by 12 points. Now then, St. Mary's defeated the University of Southern California by 6 points.

Add them up and you get 104 points. Okay, now that's settled. WHOA! But wait! How is that settled? Southern California really ought to beat Tulane, 171 to 0. Certainly! Funny we didn't think of that sooner. And, as a couple of Carolina governors were wont to say, here's how: Southern California beat Oregon by 53 points.

Oregon beat U. C. A. by 7 points. U.

C. L. A. beat Florida 13 points. Florida actually defeated North Carolina State 34 to 0.

North Carolina State amazed the grid world by beating Duke by 14 points. And Duke not to be outdone, beat Kentucky by 7 points. Well, Kentucky turned right around and played the vaunted Tennessee Vols a tie game. Tennessee beat Alabama by 25 paints, Alabama beat Mississippi by 49 points, If you add that up correctly, you get the indisputable fact that Southern California is 202 points better than Mississippi, and It's Just as well that Mississippi isn't playing in the Rose Bowl this year, for that certainly would be one big afternoon, LET'S SEE NOW But Tulane was only 31 better than that same Mississippi team. So I guess you take.31 away from 202 and the result gives you Southern California's margin over scant 171 points.

Now, let's see what we havo here. Tulane should shade Southern California by 104 points and Southern California ought to nose out Tulane, 171-0. There's something wrong with the figures somewhere wonder when: -that mistake comes see now, 104 plus 104 is 208 minus 149 is 59 plus I Where's that other sheet o.f paper? No Upsets While two of the favorites failed to win lost week, their defeats could not be termed startling upsets. Harlingen's victory over Corpus Christl was not looked for, Beaumont's win from the powerful John Reagan team of Houston was a slight jolt.

The most startling football of the week was turned in by Lubbock In District One. Due to a three-way tie at th econcluslon of the regular district schedule, Lubbock had to play two district and one bi-district game last week. The Westerners beat Tampa and Amar- lllo to win the district crown, caught a train for Quanah and Saturday walloped the Indians 20 to 0. The Lubbock "iron men" battle Abilene this week in a fourth hard game in twelve days. The Corsicana Tigers, one of the outstanding favorites of the eight contenders, were impressive beating Tyler.

They meet Austin Saturday at Corsicana. Tills is the only game in which a definite site has been selected. Sites for the following quarter-final bl-district games will be named early this week: Pairings Lutabock (Dist. 1) vs. Abilene (Dist.

3.) Ft. Worth (Dist. 5) vs. Greenville (Dist. 3).

Corsicana (Dist. 9) vs. Austin (Dist. 12) at Corsicana, Beaumont (Dist. 14) vs.

Harlingen (Dist. 16). High school critics who have trailed and observed their teams closely this season, are predicting that Corsicana, now that it has eliminated Tyler, will find smooth sailing into the finals in the lower bracket, but that the upper bracket of Lubbock, Abilene, Port Worth Central and Greenville, all powerful teams, is a tossup. The Lubbock and Abilene game this week is the Abilene has been to the state finals several times and formerly held tr.3 championship. Lubbock's leat of winning three major games last week won many supporters for the Westerners.

The Greenville Lions smashed an old rival Saturday in the Sherman team, 20 to 0. At the same time, Fort Worth Central turned in a powerful running and passing game to smother the Oak Cliff Leopards at Dallas, 21 to 7. That was several years ago, and the Aggies have been getting along quite well, thanks to the former Christian coach. They think so much of him that the other day. A- and M.
