The Ladies' Aid Association is to meet next Thursday. and we presume that among the matters to be considered will be preparations for particiption in the entertainment to be given at Phoenix Hall on the 3rd of July for the benefit of Phoenix Fire Company's engine fund. According to the statement rendered by Miss Louise Hanson, Treasurer of the Association, the gross receipted of the entertainments given on the 12th and 13th of May were $55810, expenses $347 77, leaving the handsome and satisfactory sum of $210 33 as net profit. Henry Kane, the colored man taken to the Insane Asglum from here three weeks ago, returned home last week, greatly to the consternation of his Donaldsonville family, who have reported the unexpected arrival to the authorities. Charges of bigamy and assaultand battery were pending against him before the District Court, but were dismissed by nolle pros. after his interdiction. Large lot of ice cream freezers of all kinds and sizes--old, plain style, automatic, Peerless, Maurin's Cheap Grocery Emporium.

Also spoons, flavoring extracts and all necessary ingredients for ice cream. Prices the lowest. Mr. Henry C. Brand of Houmas Store made brief business visits to town last week and yesterday, favoring the Cmnri with a call each time.

It strikes us, by the way, that Mr. Brand ought to be one of the busiest men in the parish, since he is general book-keeper for the Beirne group of plantations in the fifth ward, manager of Houmas Store, member of the Police Jury. Postmaster of Burnside post-office, proprietor of the Brand Stage Line, and part owner of the steam ferryboat Bella Israel. The fact that he fulfills the requirements of all these positions and business relations with efficiency attest the energy, integrity and public spirit which have already made him one of the most prominent and useful citizens of Ascension. More than fifty Sunday dinners served at the Riverside Hotel, at 25 cents each, and it was a bad day for country people to come to town.

The Riverside's dinner takes the cake. Arrangements for the fete champetre and indoor entertainments to be given July 3 and 4, for the benefit of Phcenix Fire Company, are going forward satisfactorily. The ladies of the community are displaying a disposition to do what lies in their power to encourage and assist the preparations and with their active cooperation snccess is well nigh assured in advance. A number of ladies assembled at Phemnix Hall, last Tuesday evening, to confer with the general arrangement committee of which Mr. Hanson is chairman, and it was agreed that the Ladies' Aid Association, represented by its zealous President, Mrs.

J. W. Bailey, should have charge of the entortainment at Phoemix Hall on Saturday, the 3rd of July, and the other ladies, of whom Mrs C. Keating was chosen President, should exercise like control over the hall entertainment of the ensuing day. Tickets for- the entertainments will be issued during the coming week and will no doubt find a large and ready sale.

On Friday a second warrant was signed by the Governor directing that the sentence of death passed upon Sampson Roland be also carried into effect on the 16th of July, between the hours of 12 x. and 8 P. x. Roland killed Benjamin Geredorderi on the Mt.

On the 18th of January, 1886, a death warrant was issued, ordering the execution of the condemned on February 17, but two days before that date a respite was granted by the Governor in order to allow the friends of the deceased to appeal to the Board ofne hPardons for a commutation of his sentence. This etoort has resulted in failure and Roland must expiate his clime with his life. The death warrant was read to him this afternoon and its dread mandate received with calmness. He.

Mr. Calafel had arisen and opened this store about 2 A.

for the purpose of housing some freight just put of at his landing by a passing steamboat. When he had finished this task and was on the point of closing the store again, the two colored men entered and asked for something to eath Mr. Calafel supplied them with some crackers and sausages and turned around to procure a pouainf and of but gar one of the knaves had ordered when he was assaulted and wounded by the miscreants in the manner above indicated. His cries for aid aroused persons sleeping on the premises and in the vicinity, and his assailants were compelled by fear of detection and capture to ran away without accomplishing the robbery which was undoubtedly the prime object of their visit. Mr.

Calafel's wounds are very painful and severe, but are not considered fatal. We hope to report his early recovery and the arrest and punishment of his bloodthirsty assailants.
