We are informed that on last Monday night an unknown colored woman, who seemed to be of middle age, was run over and killed between Linwood and Mount Houmas plantations by a train on the Mississippi Valley road.

The steamer Charles Morgan laid at the Donaldsonville wharf half an hour yesterday afternoon, discharging freight, and about twenty of her passengers took advantage of the opportunity to stroll through the front portion of town. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Gaskins have departed for their home in North Carolina.

Accompanying them as far as New Orleans, were Mrs. Rosa A. Brown, Miss Jennie Dodge, Miss McRedmond Mr. Lewis Berg and Mr. Albert McRedmond.

Those splendid man's white shirts for $1 each at Kline's Old Reliable Store are the best article for the price ever sold in Donaldsonville. We have no particulars concerning the mask and fancy dress ball given at Grange Hall last Tuesday night, but the names of the young gentlemen under whose patronage was to take place afford ample assurance of its complete and gratifying siccess. The dearth of news can be easily understood from the fact that the hotel arrivals in Donaldsonville through the week have been so few as to keep the proprietors of these places from sending their lists to us. Last week we wanted space; this, we are in need of matter, According to a compilatian from the report of the meteorology of the Ascension Branch of the Sugar Planters' Association the maximum temperature at Donaldsonville for the month of February was about sixty-six degrees and the minimum a little over thirty-one. We learn from a letter to Mr.

Tony Rodrigues that Mr. J. Keating has withdrawn entirely from and terminated his onnection with the Iberville. Democrat, or reasons which will probably be given in to-day's issue of that paper. Mr.

A masquerade ball was given at Blue Bucket Hall, last Tuesday night, under the auspices and for the benefit of the Crescent Brass Band, and the affair proved very successful. The attendance was large and the dancers enjoyed themselves to their full bent, but the fun was not permitted to go beyond the bounds of good order and the festivities were well conducted throughout. We are informed that a uALia son of Jesse Parent, a worthy colored man living on Bayou Lafourche a few miles distant from town, undertook to run away from home during the early part of the week. The father, on learning of the absence of the boy, came up to Donaldsonville and be- sought the police to look him up. Officer Fernandez shortly afterward arrested the lad and sent him home.

The concert and olio entertainment which i was to have been given February 27 and 2a3 at Blue Bucket Hall, for the benefit of the Smoke Bend Consolidated school, was postponed indefinitely, owing to the fact that a number of young ladies who had been counted upon to take part in the affair, were prevented from doing so at the time designated. Due notice will be given of the future date to be fixed for the entertainment It is with pleasure that we announce the advent of a little male stranger into the family of our fellow parishioner, Mr. Eugar Fortier. The little fellow is the firrepresentative of the male sox in his fath-r'r family and his happy parents are proud of his coming. If the mystic tell ers of quaint lore say true, he is born under a lucky star, that which brighteus the the births occurring on a Friday.

We cer taiuly hope this may prove to be the case. A ear-load of Flour- has just been aldded to the stock of Cheap Cruocery Emporium. Now is time to buy -our. UTpcle Harry and Aby know how it is.

Feace! Peacc! Peacel That peer of our iercilants, Cheap Tony, I accompanied by Cheep Tony, and Sidney Vega, has gone to the Crescent City, where he has taken in the Mardi Grea festivities and Firemen's Parade and will purchase an immense stock of Spring and Summer goods to com.piote that he has already received from New York, lioston, Philadelphia Cincinnati, and to obtain a little peace from the cries from cheap and good bargacins. Largo sales, sinall profits and good quality of merchandise will hereafter be seen at his store. On Mardi.Gras evening an accidental shooting affray took place in Smoke Bend two young colored men. DomiY nique LeBlanc donned a fancy costume, cova ered his face with a mask and started out to have fun with the children and scare, the chicken-hearted. To carry out his object more thoroughly he provided himself with a pistol and paraded up and down the public road.

On the levee, however, stood William Hill, who, to show his bravery, rushr ed down, struck the pistol in Butler's hand and, the weapon going off, received the bullet. The wound is by no means serious and as the shot was accidental no arrests were made. Mfapz Gb a reSE say that tbe mauer'n bal i mi Sra last Tuesdq night, under the joint of sFenixFs gompany and "the liidependenf BrassB t4d, was by no means so snccessful' as had been hoped by its projectors. The attendance was small, comprising only about a dozen ladies and scarcely more than that number of gentlemen, hence it is not to be wondered at that the financial result of the affair was very meagre, showing only a slight margin above expenses. It must be taken into consideration, of course, that many of our amusement loving people were absent from home, having gone to New Orleans to view the carnival pageants of Rex and Proteus, but there were more than enough left to have made the ball a brilliant success if the disposition to do so had not been wanting. Why any entertainment given by two such respectable and wtrthy organizations as the Independent Brass Band and Phoenix Fire Company should not be deemed worthy of contenance and patronage by this community, is more than -we can say. The composition of the associations named and of the committes charged with the conduct of the ball were a guaranty that even the most fastidious guest would encounter nothing to cffend the sensibilities.

It has been a cause of unpleasant remark-for several years past that none of the entertainments given by our fire companies are as successful as be, and the tac is a reflectio coimmUi.lty than citizens abir Ienceforth to er.0. cate. In almo- evt-vry other town the pie a. i.t-ay and willing to mti th firemen, ana b.il.s or other fc'tiv by the volutnte, ui-e fighters or benefit are aea it invariably brilliant soCem and pecuniary successes. Eficient firt companies are necessary to the welfare, safet and prosperity of every town or village, bat it is a hard task to maintain such organzations in a community which is prone to give them a cold shoulder, especially when they are in need of assistance and suppori.

Without ilberal aid Phceuix Fire Company has a poor of meeting the payment shortly di i its handsome steam engine, and It would oie a lasting shame to allow tile tii bie taken away from thef town after Itn flourish of trumpets with which its adve.t was greeted. Up to this time the property has not been recovered, but two men suspected of the robbery have been arrested by a member of the New Orleans detective force. Have you had the mumps? The time is near at hand when Cheap Tony will donate another of those splendid Light Running Domestic Sewing Machines to the holder of the lucky number in his grand gift drawing.

Encouraged by the results of past donations, Cheap Tony will continue to give away these famous machines to his patrons, each purchase to the amount of five dollars entitling the customer to one chance in the drawing. It must not be supposed, however, that the prices of goods enhanced to make up for the donation, as investigation will -convince the most skeptical that Cheap Tony's prices are below those of any of his competitors, while his goods will compare favorably in quality with any in the market. His stock is a splendid one, comprising a large array of dry goods, clothing, notions, boots and shoes, hats and caps, groceries Ti tand general merchandise, and affords bar- in gains that cannot fail to suit all tastes and ti purses. In short, Cheap Tony is still to to the front and proposes to stay there. Every purchaser of a bottle of Reed's Gilt Edge 'Ionic at Maurin's Cheap Gro- js cery EEmporium will be entitled to a chance in the drawing of a handsome eight-day clock.
