The ITartstille Seiitihd in its -last issue says: "The river commenced rising rapidly on weunesaay morniiur, and Thursday morning the backwater was out over all the bottom lands. The rise of backwater is considered by old residenters to be the most rapid that has occurred foraereat number of years. During the whole. of yesieruay it rose at the rate of about four inchea to the hour. This morning the rise was about three inches to the hour, but not keeping it up.

A few hours more and the river will be ont of the banks, submerging miles of our best fanning lauds and doing a vast amount 01 damage." The Acw Uniform for Onr Police Force. It was stated in these columns a few days since that a new uniform, to be worn by tue ponce lorce and consisting of a Pana ma hat, white vest, ditto trousers and woolen blouse, had been adopted by the Police Committee. It seems that in this statement we erred, and that even a more airy and picturesque costume was adopted by said committee, aided and abetted by the Mayor, if the following communication to the Captian of the "Police from the I'oiice Committee amounts to anything: XAsnviLLE, April 1S7-1. Capt. W.

H. Y'ater, Chief of Police. Dear Sir: The following is a copy of resolutions adopted by the Police Committee, in conjunction with the Mayor, on the Cth of April, Jbi4, there beius present Messrs Cullom, chairman, Reddick, Hailey, and Adams: "At a meet in" of the Mayor and Citv Committee on Police, this day had, the following uniform was unanimously adopted by the same for the use of the officers and police force from the 1st of May next to the 1st 01 October next, to-wiu "Each officer and man to wear a Panama hat, and each number on each liat to be encircled with a silver wreath; also, each officer and patrolman are to wear blouse coat, except the Captain, who lias the discretion to wear either a blouse or frock coat." Removal of Man's Jaw. Last Monday a very difficult surgical operation was performed in this city by Dr. Paul F.

Eve, assisted by Drs. Lindsley and Duncan Eve. Fifteen years ago the man upon whom the operation was performed liad his left jaw affected by a decaying tooth, and from this the entire jaw-bone became diseased. The part began to swell and continued to grow worse until the unfortunate man, who is a resident of Kutli-er'brd county, became convinced that he would die if the diseased part were not removed, and so made up his mind to the terrible risk. After consulting the doctors, he came to Xashvilie last week, attended by two brothers, and the operation was begun at half-past ten a.

Monday. The flesh was laid oien on the left cheek, the bone several at the joint near the ear, the stomacn tooth on the rmht side of the chin pulled out, and the jaw-bone sawed into at that point and entirely removed. The operation lasted an hour, and was performed in the presence of a number of medical students. Just before beini: put under the influence of ether, the patient exclaimed that he wanted to see his wife and children once more, to which one of the physicians replied tliat his only chance to do so was to bear up bravely. He did bear the terrible pain with remarkable fortitude and was resting easily yesterday.

High Water. The rise in the Cumberland continued all day yesterday, and the river is now much higher than it has been lor many years heretofore. Hundreds of our citi zens visited the river yesterday to see the immense expanse ot water which is back ing up into all the low ground bordering on the river. The flat between the city proper and Xorth Xashvilie inundated to such an extent that several houses are submerged, and if the waters do not subside to-day, it will become necessary to give the pupils of the Belleview School a short vacation, as the building will be inaccessible except by means of skiffs and canoes. The merchants doins business near the river fear that it will be necessary to re move the goods from their cellars, and, indeed, some of them have taken this precaution.

On South Market street below Broad, the water has entered the cellar of Rannie's confectionery, and in the wine cellar of II. V. F. Baker, adjoining, the water com menced running in last evening. In this cellar is a large stock of fine wines in pipes, and to attempt to handle which would be attended with considerable labor and diffi culty.

The cellar of the cotton warehouse of bpurlock, Hoke College street, below Broad, is threatened, and if the rise continues the cotton will have to be removed to-day. On the 7th inst. the depth of water in the channel was twenty feet, and a rise five feet was indicated tiiat day, since which date the rise has continued at the following rate: April seven feet eight inches; 0, ten feet four inches; 10, three feet; 11, one foot; 12, one foot; la, one foot; 14, one foot, making the depth in the channel yesterday fifty feet. The water was still rising at 10 clock last night, and will no doubt continue during to-day, as the heavy rain of Monday night passed off toward the head of the Cumberland. The plank sidewalk on Xorth College street, across Lick Branch, where the water is at least twenty feet deep, is a very dangerous condition.

In Edgefield the waters arc spreading out rapidly. Communication between the bucket factory and terra finna is nearly cut off, and in all probability the watchman who was making his rounds at that establishment last night alone ill lc required to press a boat into service this morning in to get out. The back stretch of the race-course is inundated, and the horses were removed from their stables last evening and brought to the city. Senator Hughes who came in from Mc-MiimvHIe yesterday, says that the rainfall in that section of country Monday night, was very heavy; tliat Collins' river, and Caney Fork are higher than they have been before since 1S50, "and tliat an immense volume of water from those streams will probably reach Xashvilie to-day. nc reports all the low land Imlween McMinn-ville and Tullahoma, inundated.
