The friends of Postmaster Rene Braud, of Darrow, will regret to learn that he is suffering from quite a seVere-attack of illness. Rene Braud, of Darrow, announces the engagement of his daughter, Lena, to Rene Serre, son of Clement.Serre, a wellknown farmer of Darrow. The marriage will take place at the Catholic church in this city on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Messrs. Vega, Taylor, Caleb and Harry Weber and others are enjoying a quail hunt today and will spend tomorrow also in the field with dog and gun. The printing plant of the erstwhile Donaldsonville Progress was sold recently to a company composed of Messrs. J. P.

Bourgeois, J. F. Arceneaux and other well-known citizens of the seventh ward, and has been transported to St. Amant, where the equipment has been installed in the printing office conducted at that place by Mr. Bourgeois.

Mrs. L. M. Turner went to St. James yesterday afternoon to be present at the marriage of her niece, Miss Mabel Thibodaux, to Robert Reed, a successful young business man of Lutcher, the ceremony being solemnized early this morning at the residence of the bride's mother, Mrs.

Blanche Thibodaux. Mrs. Turner returned home on the 9:51 a. m. T.

Pouchereau and R. N. Slator, and Miss Ritta Comeanu Corn Club Boy Made Good Student. Sibley LeBlanc, a member of, the boys' corn club of the Dutehtown high school, who was awarded the beneficiary scholarship to-the farmers' short course at the Louisiana State University donated by the enterprising firm of B. Lemann of this city, gave a good account of himself at the conference and proved a most diligent and attentive student, according to a letter received by Supt.

J. L. Rusca from V. L. Roy, special agent of the boys' demonstration work.

Mr. Roy writes as follows: "I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you and through you to thank the firm of B. Lemann Bro. for sending Sibley LeBlanc to the farmers' short course. We have not had a more attentive or diligent farmer in attendance than Sibley has proved to be.

He is a clever fellow and is giving a good account of himself. I can conceive of no better sort.of premium to award than the one so generously offered by the Messrs. Lemann. We have another corn club boy here from East Baton Rouge parish. Next year we hope to have forty or fifty." Good Returns from Truck Shipments.

The Donaldsonville Truck Growers' Association is making regular weekly express shipments of choice vegetables to' Chicago, Cincinnati and other northern markets, and is obtaining very fair results from the consignments. The -excellent price of $14 a barrel for parsley, $8 a barrel for spinach and $6 a barrel for shallots was realized from a shipment of these vegetables which reached Chicago Jan. 9, just after the recent severe cold snap. The members of the association who have participated in the shipments of the past several weeks have netted to date something like $400. Later on, when the farmers become more experienced in packing their produce and the shipments are mfade in larger quantities, or by freight in carload lots, the returns will be very materially increased and the truck growing industry will become an important and profitable adjunct to the community's varied commercial resources.

Attractions at the Gondran. Manager W. F. Nolan announces as the attraction at the Gondran Theatre tomorrow night "The Rosary," which comes to Donaldsonville direct from a successful week's engagement at the Crescent Theatre in New Orleans. The criticisms of this production in the Crescent City papers were of a most favorable nature, and the attraction is recommended as being entirely worthy of patronage.

The Brody Comedy Company will be seen at the Gondran next Wednesday and Thursday night, fbe I and 2, presenting playlets and specialties, with an entire change of bill each night. The company is composed of seven people, and the performance extends thro'" two hours and a reels of special -i tuig will be shown during the intermissions. A very delightful affair of the week was the bridge party given' on Thursday afternoon by Mrs. J. D.

Hanson at her lovely home in Lessard street. The three dainty prizes offered were captured by Mesdames S. V. Vega, Clerville Himel and J. S.

Thibaut. Mrs. Hanson's guests included Mesdames W. J. Harrison, August Thibaut, Walter Lemann, Clerville Himel, Lynn Himel, Paul Leche, R.

The People's Bank is now located in its handsome new quarters at the corner of Railroad avenue and Mississippi street, having removed from its former location in the Masonic Temple last Saturday. The facilities of the bank, already of. an unusually comprehensive and adequate character, have been greatly increased by the acquisition of larger and more modern quarters, and it is safe to assume that the splendid growth which the popular young institution has made in recent years will be maintained and materially enhanced in the future. Public Exhibit Car of Louisiana Board of -Health Arrives-City Inspected by Health Officials--Illustrated Lecture Well Attended -Meeting for Colored People Tonight. The health exhibit train of the Louisiana State Board of Health arrived here on schedule time at 8 o'clock last Wednesday morning, and was met at the T.

and P. depot by a delegation of prominent citizens and physicians, who extended the party a cordial welcome to Donaldsonville. The officials in charge of the train were received by a committee of physicians headed by Dr. D. C.

Brumfield, of Darrow, president of the parish board of health; Dr. W. M. McGalliard, president of the city board of health; Dr. Paul T.

Thibodaux, coroner, and Dr. E. K. Sims, member of the committee on arrangements, and were placed in automobiles and shown over the city. Dr.

Oscar Dowling, president-of the Louisiana Board of Health, accompainied by Coroner Thibodaux, inspected the courthouse and jail, and Dr. Sidney Porter, chief medical inspector' of the state health board, accompanied by. Brumfield, inspected the and fruit-stands. At 9 o'clock the pupils of the Donaldsonville high school and other public schools in this section of the parish marched to the depot in a body and were shown through the train: The pupils assembled at the high school building and paraded one or two of the principal streets of the city before proceeding to the depot, making a most'creditable: display which elicited favorable comments from the. visiting officials and the general public.

Each grade was in charge of its teachers, and at the-head of the various classes marched students bearing banners with appropriate devices and The train left here at noon Wednesday via the Napoleonville branch of the T. and P. Railroad- for 1Napoleonville, from whence it proceeded morning to Paincourtville, returning to Donaldsoilville 'Thursday afternoon. At 8 o'clock Thursday night au.jllusti'ated lecture was giveih'in the auditorium of the DonaldsonviJle high school. and was attended by a large and representative audience.

'The speakers were Drs Dqowling and Porter, and Miss Agnes Morris, and. interesting moving pictures of flies, the hook worm, a model dairy and other subjects were shown in connection with the lectures. The speakers were introduced by Dr. E. K.

Sims, and others on the platform were Revs. J. M. T. Massatdier and J.

B. Delepine of the Cathohc church, Mayor Charles Maurin, and Drs. Brumfield and Thibodaux. The program was interspersed with several vocal selections by the young ladies comprising the, high school glee club, and the exercises throughout were of a most interestiAg nature. At 12:20 o'clock yesterday alternoon the train left for Thibodaux, and on the return trip visited Labadieville and Plattenville, arriving -here this afternoon.

The program for tod includes a lecture for ladies at 5 o'clock p. m. by Miss Agnes Morris, at the high school auditorium, and an illustrated lecture for colored people at the True Friends' Hall at 8. o'clock p. m.

Tomorrow the train will be open for public inspection, the period between 8 and 10 o'clock a. m. being allotted to the colored people. Everybody who visits the train will be shown through the cars and the many interesting exhibits which they contain will be demonstrated and explained. Yesterday forenoon the visiting physicians made an inspection of the lunch counters, dairies, slaughter houses, livery stables, market houses, drug stores and other places and utilities of a public or semi-public character.

Beyond a few remarks of a cursory nature, nothing definite has been obtained concerning the results of. the various Dr. Dowling states that his report will be compiled in official form and made public later, and The Chief hopes to secure a copy of the document for publication in its next issue. The officials in charge of the health train are: Dr. Oscar Dowling, president State Board of Health; Dr.

m. and returning at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The piece de resistance of the feast was a delicious courtbouillon prepared by Chief Joe Gouaux, and the initiated-that is, all whp have partaken of any of the numerous Epicurean dishes which Mr. Gouaux knows so well how to concoct-need not be told thaf the courtbouillon was a most tempting one and was greatly relished by those who partook of it. The fish entering into the composition of the toothsome dish were of various varieties, and were caught with a seine when the levee was cut so as to permit the water held between the old and new embankments at that point to to the river.
