New College Coaches Manage Only 75-97-6 Record in 1958 NEW YORK There were more frowns than smiles today Jis 19 college football coaches sat back and recollected over the season just ended. This group represented the major coaching changes after the 1957 season. Many of the changes were filled with controversy, speculation as to timeliness and warnings of "too late to do any good in 1958." Matter of Personnel The latter charge seemed to stand up. The 19 new coaches managed an over-all record of only 75-97-6 as compared to a neat 101-79-6 mark by the men they succeeded. The sudden shift in success certainly is no reflection on the coaching ability of the men concerned.

In many cases it was a matter of personnel lost and better personnel of opponents. Take Texas A M. Paul (Bear) Bryant led the Aggies to an 8-2 regular season record in 1957 and was beaten by Tennessee 3-0 in the Gator Bowl. But he had All-America and Heisman Trophy winner John Crow as the mainstay of his backfield, plus tackle Charley Krueger to anchor a big line. Those two graduated last and Jim Myers, who Cleveland Needs Assist from Detroit Lions Today Michigan Grid Stars Visit Canadian Club HAMILTON, Ont.

Michigan football stars Bob Ptacek and Gary Prahst arrived here Saturday for contract talks with coach Jim Trimble of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Big Four Union. Prahst, a 6-3, 220-pound end, was picked by the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League in the preliminary draft last Monday. Ptacek, a 6-1, 205-pound halfback, was one of the Big Ten's leading passers. (By The As.soclatcil Press) The Cleveland Browns can win their customary title shot today, but they need an assist from Detroit's lame duck Lions to pull it off. The Browns are at Philadelphia and the Lions entertain New York in the top battles on a five-game NFL card.

If the Browns whip the Eagles, and the Lions turn back the Giants, the Dec. 28 title game will match the Browns and Colts in Cleveland. Decide Next Sunday But "the book" says the eastern conference winner won't be decided until next Sunday, when New York is host to Cleveland on the final day of the pro season. The Browns are favored by seven points today, and the Giants get the nod by three. The New York team, however, is the most unpredictable in the game.

The Giants on successive Sundays handed the Colts and Browns their first Strikes and Spares Here's How to Relax While Bowling As you've probably noticed, I Relieve quite strongly In relaxed bowling. I think relaxing not only helps you enjoy the game more, but also helps you score better. I've been bowling for many years and I don't think there is any sort of pressure in bowling that I haven't felt in tournament, match or league play. And yet, I always try to relax before stepping up on the approach. My secret for relaxing, is simple.

I chew gum. I find chomping away on several sticks of gum is more relaxing than anything else I've tried. Other bowlers will smoke a cigarette to let off tension bowling. Some, like Walter. Ward or Johnny King will chew on a cigar.

This helps them to relax. When you're out on the ap- stop, and take a deep taking your dtj If this, too, doesn't defeats, but lost three other games in which they were fa vored. Detroit (4-5-1), already stripped of its western conference crown and thereby denied championship spot, was never in the running in the west. But the Lions are the only team besides the Giants to beat the Browns. Steelers Have Chance Pittsburgh still has a mathematical chance for the eastern title.

But the Steelers (6-4) have to win both remaining games, including today's at Washington, while the Browns (8-2) dropped two and the Giants (7-3) lost to the Lions, to even tie for the crown. Other games today are Chicago Cards (2-7-1) at the Chicago Bears (6-4) in an intra- city, inter-conference rivalry and Green Bay (1-8-1) at San Francisco (4-6). Pittsburgh is a three-poin favorite, the Bears seven and the 49ers 10. help relax you. Basketball players do it before shooting a free throw.

You may have methods of relaxing different from those I've mentioned, but by all means find some way to cut down the tension. You'll bowl better, and you'll enjoy the game more, Lions Will Hold Lou Creekmur Day DETROIT will be "Lou Creekmur Day" at Briggs Stadium Sunday afternoon when the Detroit Lions meet the New York Giants. President General Manager Edwin J. Anderson of the Lions said the board of directors will present a gift to Creekmur, who has not missed a single game since he joined the Lions In 1950. His consecutive game streak will go to 168 if he can play the last two games against the Giants and the Chicago Bears.

Creekmur has announced he will retire after the season. came from Iowa State to sue ceed Bryant, had to build a new single wing offense around Charley Milstead and only average linemen. The result was a fair 4-5 record. Has 5-3-1 Record Bryant took over for J. B.

Whitworth at Alabama and generated a 5-3-1 record after the Crimson Tide was 2-7-1 in 1957. It would be hard to argue with the job turned in by Ben Martin at the Air rc Academy. Martin, who succeeded Buck Shaw, led the Falcons to a 9-0-1 record and berth in the Cotton Bowl against Texas Christian New Year's Day. The Falcons, finishing No. 6 the final Associated Press poll, were 3-6-1 in 1957.

When they tied Iowa 13-13 Oct. 4, heads were turned and the Falcons emerged the Cinderella team of the year. What Is Answer? What is the answer? Who can say? Martin had a mediocre 3-6-1 record at Virginia last year, with senior fullback Jim Bahktiar and soph quarterback Reece Whitley to head a backfield that had little up front. Martin's succsesor, Dick Voris, had Whitley for only part of the season because of injuries and finished with a 19 mark. Seven of the new coaches had winning records.

Twelve of their predecessors finished as winners in 1957 and one broke even. Specifically the Packers seek a much needed victory in their new desperate bid to avoid their worst season in 40 years In the NFL. Green Bay is last in the Western Conference with a 1 -8 -1 record. Possibly at stake as well are the jobs of Coach Scooter McLean and general manager Vern Lewellen. McLean is completing his first season as head coach. Hank Gremminger, veteran defensive back of the Packers will be out of action for the rest of the season.

He suffered a hairline fracture of the left leg just below the knee in the Packers Thanksgiving Day game against the Lions at Detroit. The Packers traditionally end their season with the junket to the West Coast. A meeting with the Rams at Los Angeles a week from Sunday will close the season. Moore is defending his crown for the first time since he knocked out New York's Tony Anthony, the No. 1 contender, in the seventh round at Los Angeles, Sept. 20, 1957. It's been a long time between championship fights for Archie but he already has beaten most of the deserving contenders on the elite top ten. Durelle is ranked third behind Anthony and Harold Johnson of Philadelphia.

Johnson was disposed of via the kayo route by Archie three year.s ago. Anthony is the last man to beat Durelle, The New Yorker stopped the husky fighting fisherman in the seventh round in New York, last March 14.
