the nation to give President Nixon another four years in the White House but in most other races Democrats held the lead Ben John Tower And Maurice Angly candidate for State Treasurer were the exceptions Democrat Dolph Briscoe candidate for governor held a lead of about 3806 votes over hisRepublican opponent Henry Grover but there were stHl absentee votes from the machines and the mail to be counted These totaled around 9000 1 EXHAUSTED election workers were stilt at work after midnight and voting lines were stHl in progress around 11 pm in the Ysleta area The last vote was cast at 9:30 pm last night at Precinct 29 St Hall 1810 Elm street Part of the delay was due to machine breakdown Probably the only reason candidates and voters learned today who the winners were is due to the races was Sheriff Mike Sullivan who totaled up 50844 votes to his Republican 18572 Sullivan was opposed by one of his former deputies Gary Hetrick a political novice Voters in El Paso along with the rest of the state returned Republican Senator John Tower to his Senate seat by a margin of about 5000 votes a lead which may be swelled by absentee counts Democrat Barefoot Sanders got 30969 votes to 35826 PRESIDENT lead over Sen George McGovern totaled a comfortable 13000 votes with the Nixon total set at 43078 to 30853 In the race El Paso gave Briscoe 31607 to Grover's 27739 Ramsey Muniz the candidate for La' Raza Uni da garnered 12240 votes and Deborah Leonard of the Socialist Workers Party got 410 In El Paso County Angly topped his opponent State Treasurer Jesse James the incumbent with voting was especially heavy among traditional Democratic voters in the South in the industrial cities of the North among Catholics Jews and nationality groups IN 22 STATES majorities of voters elected Democratic senators or governors at the same time they were voting overwhelmingly for Nixon or againsf McGovern The Democratic Party took a knock on the head but it was left standing Nixon had asked by Clinton Anderson who stepped down because of poor health The Texas race for the US Senate saw incumbent Republican Seq John Tower defeat Barefoot Sanders Tower an U-year veteran owed his victory to his strength in rural Texas In New Mexico with 97 per ceqtof the precincts counted today Domenici had 196175 votes or 54 per cent and Daniels had 189476 or 46 per cent support of atomic energy and space programs contributed to location of valuable research programs in New Mexico at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory Sandia Laboratories and White Sands Missile Range MUST make sure that the for Nixon and generally Republican in the US Senate and Texas race Both large and small precincts from the state race on down went predominately Democratic In a check of eight precincts in the various sections of El Paso Nixon won in the Northwest Northeast and the Airport areas ag areas with large precincts Republicans Tower and Grover also won in those areas The southside with a large Modcan-Amextean vote went heavily for McGovern and Democratic candidates for governor and UB Senate THE LARGER precincts registered turnouts of wed over half while the smaller inner city precincts missed the 50 par cent mark or just reached it Precinct 74 with 4718 voters registered the largest of the 88 precincts recorded 2881 votes more than half of its voters Located at Eastwood Knolls
