Retiring Late in 1973 1 Inveited about $75999 with retirement income as my goal 1 bought eight utility com- mon stock Issues and four bond issues 1 attempted to follow your adlvce and buy only highest quality bonds but fmmd that Impossible even when working through three different brokers Would you recommend any changes? How should I upgrade my stocks which have fallen in price? I plan la retire la a year or so A I understand why you went so heavily into income type issues three years before you intended to draw upon these investments for income I must assume that the interest and dividends you have received have been subject to income taxes at your highest bracket during years you were employed and presumably didn't need more high taxable income I grant you 1973 and 1974 were tough years for all common shares but you certainly have expected high yielding utilities to show you any capital gains to be cashed in after retirement dropped your capital gains tax liability However all water over the dam Since you plan to retire soon you should hold the issues you have The utilities are all good providers and the bonds are good to top quality I'm puzzled by your finding purchase of highest quality bonds New AAA and AA bonds are issued regularly and outstanding AAA and AA bonds are traded every business day If you tell a broker you want AAA or AA grade you have no reason to accept less than that quality any more than you would be expected to accept tin when you asked for sterling silver A broker who bother to list a half dozen AAA or AA bonds for your consideration obviously doesn't want ydur business Go to another broker 4 0 0 TREASURY or A good deal of semantic confusion seems to have been created by paragraphs here to the effect that income on Treasury bills must be treated for tax purposes the same as current interest rather than as a capital pin (either or in the case of bills running six months or longer A reader sends along a Treasury information sheet which contains this paragraph: bills do not bear interest but the difference between their purchase price and the amount received on a later sale or redemption (face value at maturity) is income to be in included in Federal (not state or other) income tax Far be it for me to argue with the US Treasury All I want to point out as clearly as I can is that call it what you will if you buy a bill for $950 and sell it for $980 you have $30 in current taxable income or if you hold it to maturity and redeem it for $1000 you have $50 of taxable income whether you call it or or 0 0 0 I am 29 Interested in buying about $4999 worth of stock and ptting more Interest than the banks pay Presently my money Is In a per cent savinp account A Let's set forth some definitions before we even begin to discuss this question 1) I hope that $4000 is above and beyond a comfortable i savings account 2) Stocks pay dividends not interest 3) A young man of 20 with $4000 to spare we must assume is not desperately in need of further income (If wrong the money should go into a 7-7 per cent savinp account or into 9 per cent corporate bonds) 4) A young investor putting money into the securities market should 9944 per cent of the time aim for long-term capital gain via growth shares which by definition rarely pay as high as 6 per cent and may in fact pay as little as 1 or 2 or 3 per cent Your envelope is bringing you a list of growth stocks Make a choice without regard to amount of dividends paid 0 0 0 I bought some $1199 face value bonds in 1959 for $759 each What are they worth now? A About $1900 plus depending upon the month of purchase 0 0 0 Should I sell out some convertible debentures at a loss? retired and need more income A I figure your convertibles selling around 75 are yielding about 6 per cent You could get 9 per cent on the money by switching to non-convertible bonds 0 0 0 Please send me a list of stocks which may be bought at the rate of $49 a month A Clip any NY Stock Exchange market list from your Union In 1141 1247 UNITED FUNDS: Accum 521 4 41 Bnd Fd X4-49 733 Contow 9 05 993 Confine 4 34 903 Incam 10X 11 Selene 514 573 Varied 533 543 UldSvcF 447 NL USAACa 4X NL US GvtS 947 941 USLIFE FUNDS: Aaex 401 4X BaIFnd 7 27 790 Com Stk 1113 1214 VALUE LINE FDS: ValLne 515 673 Val Inc 443 444 Lev Glh 727 795 Val Sac 335 544 VANCE SANDERS: Invest 445 7J5 VS Cam 535 543 Seed 579 743 Vndrbtt 277 NL VANGUARD GRP- NEW YORK (UPI) The 10 most active stocks traded an the OTC market Monday as supplied by NASD Grwth 1119 NL Incom 941 NL Nw Era 1151 NL Nw Hor 769 NL Pro Fd 507 NL ProvdGt 7 59 5X PrudSIP 9J4 944 PUTNAM FUNDS: Canver 1034 1119 Eaulty 1005 1094 Georg 1259 1374 Grwth 1514 1110 Incom 709 775 Invest 774 444 Vista 1054 11 54 Vovag 1144 13X Reserv 100 NL RevereF 495 541 Sake Eg 7J4 4X SatoceG 514 575 SCUDOERFDS: Intr Inv 1391 NL Mat Res 1002 NL Balanc I3J3NL Com 564 NL Specal 22 45 NL Sbd Lev 4n 517 SECURITYFDS: Eaulty 354 344 Invest 404 544 Ultra 405 443 Sentinel 940 1023 Sentry 1234 1344 SHAREHLD GRP Comil 477 521 JOLIET IN (UPI) Livestock Monday: Cattig 45K trade active an teen Haw on helteri lteen Heady to cants higher helteri steady In limited trading High choke and prime steers 55 choke and prime 53 50-54 choke 4900-53 50 goad and choke 4500- X00 standard and good Halstolns 3SOO-39J0 choke Helton 4035-4950 Hags 1200 Irad active barrows and guts cents to 100 lower No 1-2 300-230 lb S700-57X No 1-3 200-350 lb 5425-5700 No 2 3 250-270 lb 55 00-5635 Tuesday's estimated receipts IX cattle IJOOhogs Stock Adatoh Coots PennOffsGos DorcheslerGas PennioilLatex AmExpress PabsIBrew NuclearDvnam Penn Lite MestckCp CHICAGO (UPI) FeNewtng or prices on the Midwest Stock Exchange: Sales Nit Ihds) High Lew Last Chg AncherCupl 5 I0' 10 10 A they Prod I to Canon PSct 14 (4ta llto IStalto ConlH Carp 30 43to 43 43to Grain Belt I 4 4' 4' Grkt Bros 3 14 14 14 Hellemn 44 1400 llto IP 11' to Hein wernr I 5M 5to SM 145900 177400 121 43 JK 543K 5 54300 39to 54300 llto 513X 40 JX lto 40300 33 121 5 Bid Asked CM 34' I 110 12'e S' 40'- W- Mto 1 I' i 1-14 14' 9 to 44' i RsEqty 352 344 Bra Inc 4 44 972 FkILfEq 964 10X Bro US 944 10 to FdMIdo 430 NL IMASSCO: FUNDS INCP Freem 709 777 GROUP IndpF 723 791 Comm -452 931 Mass 944 1041 ImpdC 709 775 MASSFNCL: BonkamerlcaCp 44 IX 44' MIT 1030 1117 MIG 1031 1112 MID 1243 1340 MFD 13101305 MCD 1304 14J4 Mates Iv 155 NL Mather 1043 Fund 390 435 Mid Am 475 519 Grwth 500 554 Money 100 NL Incom 713 7 79 ManyFd 9491059 Hart Gtti 1039 NL MSB Fd 1347 NL 974 1035 549 NL 444 NL Cons Inv CnHnew ConMtln Expler I vest Moran Trust Wetsly I llll' 19 351115 101 475 1014 1145 9X 1045 1045 1164 9X 1031 911 994 117 157 NL 543 July ttH75 Dow Jones Average 30 INDUSTRIALS Wslmn Wmdsr Varied I VlkngGr WallS' or Amcoo 503 5X AmMut' 431 904 Bnd FA 14J3 1533 Gth Am 453 4 94 Inc Am 1344 1495 Inv Am 1343 14 01 Nw Prs 1422 1773 WoshM 13031314 AmGrlh 474 LX Amlnsln 471 515 Am Invst AmNIGr ANCHOR GROUP: Dally In 100 NL Grwth 479 744 514 NL 334 254 900 Decat Detor Delta deVegh DrectCp DodgCx Or Burh NL 43 347 795 96 5 43 1043 Enfrpr 511 511 Flel Fd 4JS 501 Harbr 7X lM Legal 557 711 PaceFd 10!
