Page ZSght EL PASO HERALD-POST Saturday May 11 1963- Great-Grandmother of Eight Feted as 'Mother of the Year Mrs Fairley Pioneer Receives Annual Honor El Paso Herald-Post Mrs Callie Fairley mother of two grandmother of five and great grandmother of eight today was named of jOe Year' by the Junior Women's Qrii of El Paso The honor was accorded die 82-yea roki El Pasoan known to a host of friends throughout the City simply as Callie at the Junior Woman's annual Mothers Day luncheon and Installation held in the Coronado Country Club Mother of die Year selection Is made from nominations submitted by El Paso clubs and organizations and tha El Paso Junior Chib in cooperation with the White House which co-sponsors the event names the honoree Alert and bright-eyed Callie gives little thought to her 82 years and continues church dub and community work with a zest envied by many a younger woman She is a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church when she often helps serve tha Sunday night supper A past president and active member of the Pilot Club of El Paso she is serving again this year as most exeeHent chief of Mathias Temple 31 Pythian Sisters an once she has held three times before She enjoys traveling especially by Jet and her hobbies include record collecting and reading For many years she has made her homo with two friends Mr and Mrs Flunk Madland of SOT Coffin avenue Callie's daughters are Mrs Stowe of El Paso and Mrs Nobles of Ruidoso and her grandchildren are Mrs Dorothy Stowe Fisher of Cupertino Calif an a i a Jim Palmer of Albuquerque a graduate in Journalism from Texas Western College Mrs Irma Stowe Korniloff a member of the Mac Dowell Club of the Club of El Paso and tha El Paso Symphony Orchestra Walter Stowe who is with Schuster and Skipworth Insurance Agency end is president of the East El Paso Lions Club Gerald Stowe 1962 recipient of a Distinguished Sates Award by die El Paso Sates Executive Club and who is a teacher with tin Ysteta School District Her eight grandchildren are Amy Ann Linda and Cynthia Stcwe Lydia Paul and Kathryn Korniloff and Carl Fisher Callie was born on Jan 15 1881 in Leadville Colo where her father Tom Griffin was in the freighting business Her mother Mary Emily Jones Griffin daughter of pioneers making tin trek bom Illinois to Colorado carried lifelong scars as the result of an Indian a mbuah during the Journey west The third oldest of nine children Callie was tinea when her father bougit land and became a farmer in New Mexico The children attended schools in Santa Fe and Alamogordo and their lives were centered in the activities of home and the Methodist Church to which they belonged The virtues if hard work and honesty were stressed in her upbringing and stood her in good stead when she came to El Paso a widow with two email children In those days when opportunities for women were limited Callie opened a dining room in a roaming house which catered to convalescents With the help of only a single maid she cooked and served three meals a day for 27 people Her home-cooked food became so- famous that soon people from outside were coming to eat there lice department She was a certified city detective the first and only woman to hold such a post with tiw El Fean Police Dept She became head of tiw Vice Squad working closely with government and armed forces agencies during World War IL During her years with the police department Callie was respected and fdmirad for her integrity as well as for her executive ability Her years as a nursa and welfare worker enabled her to give understanding and practical help to young women who needed such aid far more than they needed punishment She found homes and work for many of them and more thin once dug into her own pocket for money to return a girl to her home end family For the many who came to her hungry end penniless Callie arranged with the old Quality Cafe that they be fed at her expense Callie was 78 when she retired from the police department but she has never retired from an active challenging life When tiw Pilot Home was begun and faced a critical shortage of help Callie volunteered She was as old and older than some of the guests but she did most of tiw cooking and had tiw homo running smoothly by tiw time permanent help was found Of that time CaUie has said "You know it was quite a spell before I got to thinking that I was older than a lot of the old people I was Such a statement is typical of Mother of tiw Year who has stated Just been too busy to get end adds with a sly smile Course lately I have been guilty of steeping till a quarter of eight A serious illness which could have permanently disabled a lass determined woman provided indomitable Callie with an opportunity to batter herself She was tiw patient of Dr Richmond who when Callie began to recover began to train her in practical nursing Callie soon became one of the best-loved and most in demand practical nurses in the City It was a hardship for her that her daughters had to stay with relatives whan she was 'on prolonged duty but between nursing Jobs she kept the girls with her and always made their clothes as she did her own In 1616 Callie married Lester Fairley a steel construction foreman he was a wonderful man a wonderful Callie has stated and recalls how both loved to dance and wa both liked so many of the same For tiw first time in many years Callie was able to stop working and make a real home for her family Following the United States entrance into World War Mr Fairley moved his family to Alabama where he worked on the Mussd-Shoels Project During the flu epidemic of 1918 Callie- served as a volunteer nurse until her husband contracted the disease himself Mr Fairley suffered permanent damage to his lungs and despite a tang heartbreaking struggle for health he re-mained an invalid for nine peers until hie death in 1928 During thie time Callie wee the aria support of tiw family She returned to practical nursing end then Johwd the County Welfare Agency After only a year with the agency the was asked to join the po and a half and Kathryn Korniloff who is three At rear with Mrs Fairley are Lydia Korniloff nine years old Linda Stowe nine years old and Paul Korniloff who is five Mother or the Year's other great grandchild is Carl Fisher 23 who is serving with the US Marine Corps MOTHER OF
