sight of the measure of the man Frank Lloyd Wright was as one of his biographers Peter Blake has said probably the last of the true Americans" No one to be sure denies his considerable influence on the modernist revolutionaries in Europe where in the 1920s he was much in vogue before Americans deigned to recognize his genius But when In the 19 50s the architectural revolution finally came to America Frank Lloyd Wright was less than jubilant This was not what he had In mind The new glass cubes on stilts had to him he said smell of the dissecting room" He pledged himself to destruction of the And his own architecture in reaction moved fron the earthy simplicity of his houses and the Thoreauean closeness to nature of Water" (a house that is cantilvered over a secluded waterfall)' to the defiant Guggenheim Museum in New York Gty and the bizarre psychodelically molded and colored Creek Orthodox church at Wauwatosa near Milwaukee But the box is still with us What deviations there are seem more inspired by the Swiss-French Le Corbusier who but twice and briefly set foot on American soil than by the American messiah from Taliesin If wc really and truly admire him so much why was Wright not once in the 70 years of his incredibly fertile practice asked to desip a public building In the nation's capital?
