Authorities launched an arson investigation later in the day. Neighbors reported hearing an explosion and saw smoke and flames pouring from the two-story frame house. Firefighters reached the scene two minutes after receiving the alarm at 8:31 a.m., but the structure was already engulfed by flames, said Battalion Chief Mike Flynn of the Springfield Fire Department.
