CITY COUHCIL. There wss called meeting of this body held lsst evening. We are obliged to condeiue our report. Commissioners of election for the different wards, to take the poll oa subsciibing to the Danville Railroad on the 2d December next, were appointed, as follows: For Madison Price, Burton, Valentine. For Monroe Thomas, Rutherford, Goddin.

For Jefferson. Ward Carrington, Crane, Mangum. gOn motion, $200 were appropriated, to add a new story to the kitchen of Seabrook's Warehouse. A report of the Commissioners of streets generally, providing for the opening of a street through the Armory grouuds, in accordants with the report of the commissioners of the 20th May, ISSO, and the plan approved by the executive of the Commonwealth of Virginia, including an appropriation of $1200 for grading, was then taken up and considered. Mr.

Giles was permitted to speak in opposition to the opening of the street, in behalf of the Messrs. Harvie, owners of property affected by ssid opening. Potatoes Bragg's red Mercers, noticed by us a few day since, have occasioned quite a sensation among the potatoes of the "West which opened their eyes in amazement. They had no idea that their fe.low citizens at the other end of the city could grow so was impossible said they, that a country such as they grew in could produce anything the kind. They even doubted the Dispatch, and not to be msaly mouthed, they declared that they had no idea that any such "common tatera" as came from that part of the world of Henrico, could make any pretentions whatever, to greatness Further more, thfy sneered at what Mr.

Curry theEldtr said, that the land at the Eastern side of Richmond, was better and more productive than that at the Western. We do not know to what length the haughty members of the potatoe race at the west end may not carry their are sure they will be taking off their jackets at dinner time with unwonted alacrity to prove their claim to superiority; for their Irish is fairly up. Now we do not mean to take sides in the quarrel, but we give all concerned, fair notice that the contestants may have a fair trial every day in the week, at our table, and will our opinion be earnestly desired, give an impartial and truthful decision. But we wish it distinctly understood, that we do not desire to have any "small potatoes," which we are informed on reliable authority are to be found in both the western and eastern ends of the city I The Stabbing mooring Frederick Belvin was brought before his Honor on the charge of stabbing Lafayette Butler Sunday ing last, at the boarding bouse of Mrs. eorner of Franklin and Governor streets.

As we stated in yesterday's paper, Belvin first shot at Butler and then cut him with a knife. Dr. Little, who was first examined as to the character of the wound, stated that it was merely a flesh wound on the upper part of the left arm, about two inches long and half an inch deep. There was no danger of any serious result. It was such a wound as would be received ii the arm was raised up to ward off a blow.

We saw the knife, which wu a splendid Jwie, with a six inch blade. The counsel for tbe accused (Mr. August) not appearing by request of Mr. Belvin, the examination was postponed until to-morrow morning. The Robbebt on Bbook call tbe attention of the Police and others to the advertisement of Mr.

Silk Gobds Washington papers state that many Indies in that city have been imposed upon recently, by itinerant venders of goads, representing tnem to be genuine silks, while the chief part of the material is cotton. The fioish is of a character well calculated to dtceivc aoy perstm, except those who have the best pract cal acquaintance with the goods, such as merchants, Sec. The character of the gocds, however, is soon exhibited after being worn. The same tricks, we understand, have lately been practised in this city upon the uninitiated and unsuspecting by these fraudulent and unprincipled venders. There are now in the city, we understand, some of these scamps, and we hope the public and the police will be vigilant in etfertsto put a stop to the unlawful and swindling traffic.
