Tragedy I.N was briefly mentioned yesterday that Philip S- Clawges of firm of Wilmer and Clawget, dry goods merchants, No.

139 Market street, Philadelphia, was shot and mortally wounded Wednesday evening, by Isaac C. Bhnrlock, his principal clerk. The Philadelphia Suci has the following account of the affair: Mr. Clawges was Invited on several occasions by Mr. Shurlock to visit his residence, and a matter of coarse became acquainted with Mra.

S. Availing himself of the opportunity afforded, be poisoned the wife against her hnsband, by telling stories of her husband's infidelity, She listened, and finally yielded to his desires. This was carried on for several weeks. On Toesday evening she made a fail confession of all the facts The husband resolved on vengeance, aud on Wednesday evening he and Clawges, after attending to some business at the Masonic Hall, proceeded down Cbeenut street, turned up Seventh, and at the corner of Lodge Alley, the former made known his complaint. Upon reaching Seventh street, iu front of John Guy's tavern, Shurlock came up to bim and said, "You have foully wronged me; you are the seducer of my wife, and I am going to kill At that instant he levelled a revolving pistol at his breaat and fired.

Three or four of the loads were discharged, all of which took entering the stomach, another the breast, and a third broke bis arm. The reports of the pistol alarmed the neighborhood, and during the momentary excitement Shurlock cried out, "I did I'll cot run He was locked up at Fifth and Cbesnut streets, to await a hearing this morning. The wounded man was conveyed to the hospital. Mr. Shurlock, at the Mayor's office, confessed to having committed the act He appeared perfectly cool and collected, and told the story of his wrongs in a manner which elicited the sympathy of all the officers present.

He said, "I committed the act; I tired the revolver, and I have been most foully wronged. This man took my wife down town, drugged her with wine, and then seduced She told me so. I love my wife as I love myself." The prisoner was searched, and had upon his person a small amount of money aud a daguerreotype of his wife. The Pennsylvanian says: Mr. Clawges has a wife and four children, one of the children, a son, being nineteen years old.

Isaac C. Shurlock is about twenty five years of age He is of fine personal appearance, and is evidently of considerable nerve, inasmuch as he seemed in no wise ruffled when at the Mayor's office, and conversed with perfect freedom. Mr. Clawges was visited by bis wife last evening, at the hospital, but be could not converse with her. The Rev- John Chambers was also with him.

Tournament in Tournament of the Henrico Light Dragoons came off at the Fair Grounds in Petersburg, on Thursday, in fine style- The Democrat has the following ac ooant of The Ilenrico Dragoons, under Major J. L. Davis, were drawn up in single file in front of the Judges' stand; on their right, the Petersburg Greys, Capt. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8.1856. Csst mf the Csstfst. Few people ever think of the expense In cash of a Presidential contest. Yet it is really something enormous. The vast machinery necessary to carry on such a canvass the Bomber of organisations which it amount of printing, of writing, of postage, and of labor of every kind which is brought into service, Is far beyond any estimate usually formed.

Lot ns state a few facts which may aid in forming opinion. There are about 800 counties, and not far from 9,900 towns, in the thirty-one states composing the Union. Every town has one political club of each many towns have many There were undoubtedly during the last canvass over 15,000 organized elabs, belonging to each of tbefpolitical parties within tbe United the number of Fremont clubs may have been five thousand less, since the Republican organization did not extend into the Slave SUtes. Each of these clubs was in active operation for at least three monthg. Each of them required rooms, printing, postage, more or less travelling of their offioers and these, with other incidental expenses, could not have amounted, on the average, to less than $100 a month, or for the canvass.

The labors performed by their secretaries, presidents and committees would certainly amount to tbe steady services of at least thru men each, worth not less than each for the whole three months. No legs than 1,000 persons have been actively engaged, for nearly the whole of the canvass, in making speeches and public travelling from place to place, and always at an expense which must be met by entitled, of course, to have their own services estimated at a fair $500 for each, including their expenses, would not be a low estimate. Then on election day, there are opened in the Lnited States not less than 50,000 which each party not leas than Jiee men, besides the inspectors, policemen and other legal officers, who average, perhaps, Jive mora, making (en in all, whose services are worth at least two dollars MML Let ns sum up the aggregate of all these items: Incidental expenses of 40 000 clnbs at ch Services of three men each, for three months at $100 12,000,000 One thousand speakers three months at $500 500,000 Officers, challengers, at the polls 1,000,000 Total $35,500,000 Here is a total of mora than twenty Jive milliont of dollars expended in the of it the voluntary offering of the people, to secure the choice of such a President as they desire to see elected. The aggregate is much more likely to exceed this estimate than to fall below it does not include the money raised by exactions upon oftiee-holders, or contributed in large sums by candidates, to be used for purposes less legitimate, but more costly than those we have enumerated. Much of it goes into the hands of working laborers, and others, who fairly earn it.

But immense amounts go to fill the pockets of politician gamblers and swindlers, who look upou a Presidential election as the harvest of their Y. Times. Murderous Assault or two Turkish Wo. MAN ON THE CAHOLIC BISHOP OF MOSTAR. correspondent of the Augsburg Allgemine Zeitung writes from Constantinople, Sept 11th: "Tha Catholic Bishop of Mostar and Apostolic Vicar of the province of Herzegowina, Mr.

Barisich, barely escaped with his life on the Ist instant, in his own house Two Turkish woman having been informed that the bishop wished to prevent a Christain girl, named Catharine Ragan, from embracing Islamism, went to his house and requested to see the bishop. They were veiled, but both were armed, one having concealed under her dress a pistol, and the other a large yatagan. No sooner had the bishop entered, when one of them, a certain Kaduna Gioguscha, rushed at him with a knife, directing a blow at his breast, which would have instaqtly killed him, but for bis admirable presence of mind. He retreated rapidly, screaming for help, and soon several servants appeared, who securred the women. Ischak Pasha, the Governor of the province, had them brought before bim, and, having investigated the case, sentenced them to several years' imprisonment, notwithstanding the strenuous efforts of several influential Turks, who wished to convince him that the females were lunatics." Original Edition or London Timss states that another copy of the earliest edition of Hamlet, printed in 1603, has been recently discovered, wanting only the title page, but other wise in very food condition.

It is important, because it is more perfect than the only other known copy extant, that in the matchless Shakesperian library of the Dake of Devonshire. This edition is not a copy of the play of Hamlet as it now reads, but as it was first ritten. It was afterwards elaborated by its illustrious author into its present form. This rare literary relic was purchased by Mr. J.

O. Halliwell for the sum of £120. Flight of a Countrt postmaster of Georgetown, at the present term of the Court of Common Pleas, now sitting at Lawrence, was indicted for dispensing alcoholic liquors without a license. It seems the emoluments of bis office was not sufficient to remunerate him for his services, and he had placed in his bis office a stock of liquors of the R. G.

brand. It was noticed by tbe denizens of that quiet town, that the patrons of the office, on emerging, could not always "keep step to the music of the Union," but evinced a strong tendency towards free soil. Some individual, who was conversant with the laws of gravitation, soon solved the mystery why some bodies could preserve an equilibrium and others could not On the issuing of a capias it was ascertained that the postmaster had disappeared. Elected Editor Rev. T.

Sad Rosenburgb, a citizen of Marshall county, Va, was instantly killed at Welf Run, on Saturday last, by the falling of a huge oak, which also killed his horse. Suffering at has been received at the Department of State at Washington, that the ship Rapid, which sailed from the city ef New York en the 29th day of May last, bound to San Francisco, California, encountered tempestus and intensely cold weather, off Cape Horn, thereby losing ten of her crew, and disabling to a great extent the remainder.

The Chicago Times of the Ist contains soma additional particular, of the loss of the steamer Toiedo in Lake Michigan. The Times says: Several gentlemen connected with the insurance companies of Milwaukie visited Port Washier ton to examine the wrack of the ill-fated nroMllm- Toledo They described the £5Hf For two miles, or mere, the lake shere is lined with fragments of the wreck, piled np in many pieces, severe feet high. The propeller anchors, about 200 yards north and 2o yards outside of the piers, and the tremendona violence of the sea completed the work of destruction in a very few hours. The heavier portions of the bull have come ashore in large pieces, but the upper works are broke up into innumerable fragments. All the dry goods and furniture boxes have been rent asunder by the force their contents riddled by the sand-like sieves, and scattered far and wide along the coast.

Some of the hardware, such as cases eamo hora whole, and were 7 the f4r np the beach. Sundry bar 6 but It thought 80,000 will eover the value of all that has thus been saved. Of the forty or fifty persons on board the Propeller when she went down, only three, two deck hands and a steerage passenger, were saved. One of these deck hands, AquiUa Gifford, was on board the steamer Niagara when she took Are and burned to the water's edge, off Port Washington, ou the 24th of September. He is not twenty years of aye, and this was his first trip; His se cood ou ttio Toledo, which foundered very 'he spot where the Niagara was burnt.

When the Propeller settled Gifford sprang into the sea, and struck out for shore. Presently he felt a hand clutching at his neckcloth, and, to save himself, slipped his head out of neckcloth, and saw it go down with the poor fellow who bad caught it In his agony. With the help of a plank Gifford managed to get to the side of the pier; but he had not strength enough left to climb. He, therefore, commenced hallooing for help at the top of hu voice, and presently beard answering shouts from the shore. Before help reached him, coming wave threw him upon the pier, and Ume ia tracks for terra firma.

It is his impression that he will stay ashore awhile this Ume. Lafayette told a campaign anecdote of the revolution one morning at President Monroe's breakfast table, "of such gout," writes Wirt to bis friend Morris, 'that I think Pope ought to have it in his budget Hay asked him if Lord Sterling was really a nobleman by birth, or only a lord bv courtesy. The Marquis said he did not know how that was, but that there never was a lord that was prouder of his title; that no one could say lord' or 'lordship' in his that he thought he was the person spoken of. In proof of which he stated that one of Sterling's soldiers was sentenced to be shot for some offence, and as the poor devil was going to the place of execution, with his hands manacled behind him, he raised his eyes to heaven, and in the agony of his despair exclaimed, 'Lord, have mercy on Says Sterling, with all the importance of Jupiter, with both cheeks puffed with rage, 'I'll be damned if I do, 1 imagining be alone could be the object of the ejaculation It was exceedingly well told, and pro duced a high effect." A steamship City of Richmond, which sprung aleak, as it was supposed, a few days since, while lying at her wharf, was placed upon the dry-dock, and her hull examined, but no leak or injury to her hull could be found. The cause of her filling with water is still a mystery to all connected with her, as the cocks connected with the boiler, and through which the water might have come, were found closed after the water was pumped out.

The only supposition in reference to the matter, is that the coct was turned on by some person, and then closed after the water bad reached a certain Ledger. Testimonial Madame La Grange's bene fit in Boston, Tuesday evening, a deputation of the citizens of Boston, represented by Mr. Barry, presented the fair beneficiary with a magnificent brooch. Yankee Enterprise Boston mechanic named McGowan, has contracted with the Russian government for the removal of the ships of war which were sunk in the harbor of Sebastopol, for the defence of the town. The were made air tight and were supplied with orifices to atUch hose to pump them out. On attempting to raise them in this manner the seams were found to have started to such a degree as to render it impossi hie. They will now be raised by chains and large scows made for the purpose, applied to the ships by men in submarine armor. There are 121 vessels in all, and the price to be paid is said to be in the vicinity of $200,000.

A Monkey's generally think the monkey race are not capable of retaining lasting impressions, but their memory is remarkably tenacious when striking events call it into actieo. A monkey which was permitted te ran free, had frequently seen the man servant in the great country kitchen, with its huge fireplace, take down a powder hem that stood on the cbimnsy-place, and threw a few grains into the fire, to make Jemima and the rest of the maids jump and icream, which tbey always d'd on such occasions very prettily. Fug watched his opportunity, and when all was still, and he had the kitchen to himself, he clambered up, got possession of the well tilled powder horn, perched himself very gingerly on one of the horizontal wheels placed for the support of sauce-pans, right ever the warm ashes of an almost extinct wood fire, screwed off the top of the horn and reversed it over the grate. The explosion tent him half way up the chimney. Before he was blown up he was a snug, trim, well-sonditioned monkey as you would wish to see on a summer came down a carbonated "nigger" in miniature, in an avalsnche of burning soot.

The weight with which he pitched upon the het ashes, in the midst of the general flare-up, aroused him to a sense of his condition. He was missed for days. Hunger at last drove him forth; he sneaked into the bouse close singed, begrimmed, and looked scared and ugly. He recovered with care; and like some great personages, he never got over the sadden elevation and fall, but became a sadder if not a wiser monkey. If ever Fug forgot himself and was troublesome, you had only to take down a powder horn in presence, and he was off to his like a shot, screaming and chattering his jawa like a pair of castanets.
