Kennedy called the Nominating Convention to order at the American League Hall ftftet- noon he said: "Fellow delrgat -s to this the first island convention in tne Republic of Hawaii; Pursuant to the cbII of the Central Kxecutive 'ommittee we meet here today in the name of the American Union Party, a party which stands conspicuously for progress, for good government and for the good of all the people, but above all. in fact the very foundation, the solid rock on which we OliOS together as one man, is the politico UHion (if these isIiiiiiIh to the United States of America. "The moBt of us here will remember the 14th to 17th days of January, 1898, when we at the risk of our lives pledged ourselves to the cause of annexation. "Gentlemen, we have stood to our gune nobly since that memorable day. through good and bad reports, and now that the clouds of dust arising from the enemies of annexation huve been swept away, we come up here this afternoon to renew our obligation, pledge ourselves anew, and right here ami now devote our time, talents and money, individually and as a great political body, tj the cause of annexation, declaring that we will not give up until we get there.

Gentlemen, as chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the American Union Party, I now call this Convention to order." The following temporary officer! were then elected: J. A. Kennedy, president: D. L. Naone, vice-president; John EHinger, secretary; Achi K.

Smith, E. F. Bishop. T. P.

Murray. Charles Crozier, James Torhert, II. G. Wooten and John Souza. Order of Business J.

H. Fisher. C. W. Day, E.

C. Winston, Julius Asche, W. H. G. Arnemann, Pahia and D.

P. Kaiana. The committee on credentials reported favorably on the credentials of all of the delegates present. The committee on permanent organisation reported favorably upon the retention of the organization, making its temporary officers permanent with the addition of an interpreter. Mr.

W. L. Wilcox was nominated and unanimously elected to the position of interpreter. The coin-, initteeon cider of business made the I following report: 1. Speeches on behalf of candidates in nomination shall be limited to five minutes, and there shall lie but one speech seconding each nomination.

Before proceeding to ballot all nominees must appear before the Convention and declare their allegiance to the platform and principles of the American Union Party and their sup-port of the ticket. 7. The delegates of the fourth and fifth representative districts shall meet separately and each make their legislative nominations, hich shall he don-firmed by the whole Convention. 8.

The order of business shall he as follows: 1st. Keport of the Committee on Platform, lid. Keport of special committees. 3d. Nomination of senators, 4th.

Speeches hy senatorial nominees. 5th. Balloting for senatorial nominees. Hth. Reports from representative's nominations.

7th. Confirmation of nominees for representatives. 8th. General business. 9th.

Adjournment to meet at the call of the chair. Mr. Towse offered the following amendments AMKNOMKNT8 Allol'TKII. TheBe rules may he suspended or amended only upon the vote of two- thirds of the delegates. Vacancies occurring in the legislative ticket will he filled it a special session of (hi Convention responsible for the nomination.

The amendment! were accepted by Mr. Fithtr, chairman of the Order of Business Committee, and he moved their adoption. Seconded by Mr. Mur ray and carried. The following Committee on I'latfonn and Resolutions was then appointed: First club, T.

We oppose the employment of prison labor in any mechanical pursuit. 5.

We are opposed to the employment of Asiatics upon any public work. 1. We declare against the iiniiorta t'on of labor or material of any kind whatever by the Government. 7. We FCOOtnftienti that the Government at once secure absolute ownership of nil waterfront lands in every harbor throughout the group where the pos-s nsion of such lands hy other parties is detrimental to necessary wharfage facilities.

H. We favor a revision of the tax yttetn, wherohv all property, im proved or unimproved, shall be taxed on an aqUal basis, anil recommend a consideration of the graduated tax system. H. We favor such legislation as will promote the occupancy of all public lands by small holders, and foster the developcment of varied industries, believing it to be of vital importance that "many acres should be lor many men." We ask that Hawaiian have the opportunity to secure homesteads upon more favorable terms than granted to others. 10.

We are in hearty sympathy with the spirit which actuated the Government in its dispatch of a commissioner to search for Kuropeun labor for the In dustties of the Islands; as a further earnest of the intent of the dominant party in these premises we refer to the creation of the Labor Commission by the Councils of the Republic. 11. We pledge all the power and Influence this may possess to ag gressive endeavor to bring about at once the restriction of Asiatic immigration. In this connection we again point to the menace of Asiatic encroachment, and demand legislative protection from these people for Hawaiian, American and European mechanics and tradesmen. 18.

We urge the enactment at once of ja law that ill cause the Asiatics brought I to these Islands for plantation labor to continue in that service, or return to their homes. 13. We demand such a revision of the Mr. Naone said: It gives me grea' Tariff as will prohibit competition with pleasure to acknow ledge the honor you American products and manufactures, have conferred iu placing my name in protection to which America is justly nomination for the Senate. After it had been read in Hawaiian. Wright moved the adoption of the platform. Seconded hy Mr. Smith and carried. THE NOMINATIONS.

The Convention was then thrown open tor nomination! to the Senate. Mr. Lansing arose and said: "I desire to place in nomination for flic Senate the name oi Ptter Ctuhman Jones. Henry. Mr. Fisher then rose to place in nomina- lion a man who had always betn with the party of annexation. He had spent several yean of his life in keeping the Unit, Stales together, and he would be tt good man to add to the bounds of that country when opportunity offers. Mr.

A city paper says 'there is a nigger in the fence in the annexation movement. Yes, there is, and we are watchii.g that Behind the cants of annexation stands the American Union Party you and and behind these stand our rilles at home. I will pledge myself to this platform and if 1 cannot carry out its prin ciples I will tender my resignation to the American Union Party." Mil. Ni witiiiur. Mr.

Wright was next eaMcd and said: "My acts are my principles. I am for annexation and have been from the start. I Support every article in this platform. Schmidt took the greatist delight in announcing his cordial sup port of the platform. He had read it carefully and endorsed it at a whole. He dil not seek the nomination, but be llieves it U) he the duty of every citizen to give his service to the public. He had been an annexationist from the very first, as his acts demonstrate. To SCI ept the nomination would probably necessitate his giving up a consulate under his charge, but be' would do it.

Any sacrifice would he worth the pleasure of seeinx the Htars and snips floating over i tne Government buildings. r. NAONE. uawaiiane will leel proud to see one 01 their number in the Senate. However, if you prefer some one else and I am defeated, I will not feel hurt.

I have 1 been an annexationist since 18S7 and will continue to be. mk. John EMMELOTB. Jhn Emmeluth Said he WSi willing to ii stand by the platform in future as he had stood by its spirit in the past. He could see nothing in the future of this country which wus more pronounced than annexation.

ll.llKll. Mr. Wilder, the only nominee not heard from, had been sent for and adjournment was taken until he should arrive. When Mr. Wilder took the stand he said in substance: "I beg your pardon, gentlemen, for keeping you wailing.

Winston. Mr. Kuinu-luth renominated D. L. Naone.

Nominal ions then closed on motion of Mr. Bishop. Mr. Naone rose, and in a few remarks resigned in favor of Mr. Me- Oandltasi Mr.

Btnmeluut then moved suspension of the rules and that the secretary cast the ballot of the convention for Mr. McCandtess, This motion having carried the chairman declared the nominee unanimously elected. Mr. Jones asked for a word more and "I wish now to renew iny pledge to the American Union Party." This remark WSJ received with great applause. NOMINATIONS foil IIKI'HKSKNT ATI KM.

The house was then divided for the nomination of Representative! and reported Fourth District C. Winston. Carter, and L. Naone: Fifth District James Da vies, J. C.

Cluney and L. I lanlualani. Some of the candidates being absent it was agreed, on suggestion of Mr. Towse and motion by Mr. Smith, to receive their endorsement of the platform by loiter addressed to the American Union Party.

Captain Cluney and Mr. Ilaulualani being present made remarks endorsing i annexation. (n motion of Mr. Lansing the candl-dates recommended for the Fifth District were accepted and endorsed by the Convention, after which Mr. Naone and themselves to the Mr.

Winston pledged platform. I i i tnol ion of Mr. Fisher the nominees recommended for the Fourth District were endorsed. On motion of Mr. Smith both of the tickets, iu full, were adopted.

On motion of Mr. Towse the thanks' of the convention were extended to Mr. i P. C. Jones for his assistance, Mr.

McCandlest favored a ratification meeting of the electorate, but Mr. Sims; thought it was the duty of the Executive Committee td call such a men ing On motion of Mr. Murray a vote of thnnks was tendered the officers of thei Convention. Mr. Fisher then moved to adjourn, 1 which was carried.

Owing to ho many counter attractions listed for the afternoon, the crowd was not us large as had been expected, though the grand stand was comfortably filled. The medals were gold and silver and wi re very handsome. Some of them were dis ulbutad on the grounds and the otbeie today. Messrs. Spencer, Frein and Crosier acted as judges, Crane as starter, Corbstt and Wright as timekeepers and Andrade as announcer.
