Ay 1oF i Says jj CUPID LEAVES THE CONVENTION WILCOX FACTION BREAKS FAITH WITH REFORMERS AND THEY SPLIT THE PARTY. WILCOX RE-ELECTED FOR DELEGATE BY HIS FOLLOWING. Women Delegates and Impassioned old Men Stampede tho Meeting and Force The Split. The Home Rule convention came to an end yesterday afternoon Wilcox being re-nomlnated unanimously for delegate by the elemakules or the old folk whom he Is so fond of praising and has so often mentioned In his letters. The younger element who through the convention, headed by Prince Jonah Kalanlnnaole had been working for In dividual representation of the electorate through the establishment of precinct clubs and dlstilct committees, left the convention and split the Home Rule party In the middle of the afternoon, their leader in matter of fact fashion charging Kalauokalanl with breaking his pledged word ratified by a shake of the hand and declaring that he was once and forever through with the Home Rule party.

After Wilcox's speech of Wednesday In which he threatened to clear the convention and choose his own delegates a compromise was effected between the Reform party and the Wilcox faction by which the former was to secure their reformed constitution and the latter retain their olllclals of tne executive committee. This was ratified yesterday noon. Kalauokalanl and Cupid shook hands over the pledge and agreed to work along those lines for the unity of the party. In yesterdays' convention however the women delegates from Lale followed by several of the old men Insisted on postponing the amended cpnstltutlon and Kalauokalanl made no effort to stay them. Cupid then charged him with bad faith and left with his following.

Wil cox made two speeches later apologizing to Emmeluth for his words of the day before and stating that the battle was now on and all must fight. Another convention was announced for September. About forty went out with Prince Cupid, among them being John Wise, Cnrlos Long, Kanuha, and Meheula. The Home Rule convention closed yesterday afternoon, considerably lessened in size from the disruption which occurred when Kalauokalanl, accused of breaking his word allowed the agree ment arrived at with tne leauers or the reform nartv to be smashed with out protest on his part. Prince Jonah Kalanlanaole, after a dignified reserve ilui'lntr the debate of old men and ex cited women, dramatically made a short sneech charging the venerable chairman with direct treachery and the breaking of his word and left the convention, followed Immediately by forty of the delegates.

It was a dramatic exit made without apparent heat after one speech ot moderation followed uy silence wnue the older element and four women delecates were yelling, three or four at a time, for abandonment of the now movement for an amended constitution which it was claimed would rear the Home Rule party on a solid foun dation of precinct clubs and. district committees, through which the electorate could be taught the true value of their privileges and the real equality of all American citizens. That Wilcox was not entirely at ease was effectively demonstrated by the profuse apologies that he twice made before the convention to Enime- luth author of the proposed amend ments to the constitution and by-laws which had been vigorously thrown down. on Wednesday Wilcox denounced Emmeluth ns a man who had contributed nothing to party funds In the sending of a delegate and generally villified him. Yesterday after the reformers had left, he twice made apology to Emmeluth, who was not present at the convention, apparently afraid that the man whom he Had denounced as an evil to the party the day before would also desert him.

The women seemed largely responsible for feeding the Unities. They constantly interrupted delegate John Wise In his speech for unity. One Morman gentleman with wild gesture said that he wanted to get home to his wives and therefore could not entertain the Idea of reform or amendments and others of the Wilcox faction, who bad asked previously for twenty live million dollars of green backs rose against the reform party and clamored for a revival of the monarchy. Evidence was freely offered that these elemakules or old folk, who put up their money for Wilcox's first trip as delegate and were always mentioned affectionately In -his mainland let-ters had been given some assurance that the Queen was to be restored again. The question has kept cropping up all through the convention and Wllcpx has constantly had to coin-bat It with honeyed words and promises of crown lands and money.

The Wilcox faction is pre-eminently composed of the older element. They keep asking the delegate to explain what municipal government is. George Markham and some politicians of the Aklna, Mahoe and Prendergast type who think that Wilcox Is the best man to hang to. The walking out It Is said was not planned beforehand and Cupid's exit left Kanuha on his feet In Indignant protest. As the rest of his associates Pictures Anv Size That's what you can do wit hthe "Al Vista." If your subject doesn't Justify taking a panoramic p'Icturo you can take it half size, quarter size, or three-quarter size as you prefer.

Honolulu Photo FORT followed their leader he determined to do the same and left with ills first sentence yet uncompleted. The split wns Imminent from the early part of the afternoon's proceedings and many looked to a wordy warfare between the parties. Words there were in plenty but all from the one side Knlanlanaole, Kanuha, Wise, Long and the rest of the leaders of tho reform party lipid themselves In restraint ended by Cupid's speech which rang through tho hall in the following sentences, addressed directly to Kalauokalanl. The convention was bubbling at the time but quiet soon reigned nnd the young alii waited for absolute silence before delivering himself In nn Impressive manner.

"At midnight Inst night you extended to me your lmnd as pledge of faith and said that there was to be no more 111 feeling. We arrived at a conclusion ns to our differences of opinion regarding the new constitution nnd mutually pledged ourselves that all II) feeling was to be at nn end between us. Now you bring up this trouble once more. To the old men I want to say that we are proud of our old folk and do not wish to rob them of any of the honors which they have won for themselves by tlielr labors. "From now on, nnd I say this explicitly, I cut loose from your side.

I resign from the Home Rule party never more to be connected with It. I have been laboring for the benefit of tho people that they may have their rights and privileges, their power as voters, In their own hands." Prince Cupid states that he has finally severed himself from a party that will not give the elctorate the proper education. "The people, my people," he said, "are not being educated to take up the duties of American citizenship nor shown the privileges by the Home Rule party as at present governed, neither are Its leaders at present capable of good faith. The people are being kept in ignorance that they may be the easier led and are told stories of conditions which we younger element know do not and cannot exist but which the old folk, long accustomed to chief guidance and unposted on tho modern status of affairs, believe. I have not made any decision as to my course." During the noon hour yesterday an auxiliary conference to the one held the night night previous wns held, the caucus agreeing once more to all unite to elect Wilcox on the understanding that the amended constitution should be adopted, but that as an offset, the present olllclals were to be allowed to remain In their present positions unless convicted of bad faith or other fit cause for removal.

The executive committee of thirty members was the outcome of a charge made by Emmeluth in calling for a change of by-laws that of the sixty live members in the former campaign, there were never more than thirty present and many of them never appeared at all. The thirty was the outcome of a desire for unanimity of action nnd power to move quickly. The reading of the minutes was the first thing taken up. Then Ewaliko read the amended constitution with the added change that the present officers were available for olllee until 1904. Its reading was frequently interrupted.

Kalola was the first to move Its being passed over to the executive committee. Palau wanted more than thirty members, evidently fearing that all of the many "leaders" of the party would not bo able to get on the executive commlttc. One of the women delegates Kalaupalaoa, spoke for the present constitution. Manuka thought It was best to do nothing. Logan of Laie another Mormon delegate who found his feeling too ardent to allow him to remain In his seat wanted to go homo to his "wives" and stated somewhat Irrelevantly, that none needed thej haole's dlrtv money.

Many others followed and finally John Wise managed to catch the chairman's eye. He revived the agreement made between the leaders and pointed out that there must always be mutual concessions In party politics. Ho stated that the heat of the day previous had been cooled but there was a spark left apparently and that spark should be put out not fanned Into a flame again, "iet us be united." he concluded, "and follow our delegate to victory. I will ask the delegate to explain to you the conditions under which the agreement concerning the revision of the constitution was made." Wilcox made a speech advising the delegates to be good and saylrtg that the making of a constitution was a lengthy and matter. Kalauokalanl then followed with the serious argument saying the breaking of the constitution under the queen's regime was responsible for the loss of the country.

Cries for the motion of the women delegates to lay the constitution as amended on the table were now heard. Wise made another attempt to put out the flame of discussion nnd Edward Caypless offered an amendment which was lost In the confusion. Palau attempted to usurp the mantle of the late ICaulIa and made a "snake speech" saying that the amended constitution was offered by a lot of "kelkis" (kids) and that in Its folds a snake was concealed. Mrs. Anakou of Lale asked for tho motion to lay aside and Kaohl commended her saying that the constitution of 1900 was good enough for all of them and could hold water while the new one could not.

The reformers meanwhile made no objections but awaited the outcome. The motion was then rushed through and the constitution swept aside with a wave of tho chairman's hand. Prince Cupid then made his charge and resolve and his following left the theater and ithe neighborhood ot the convention. Kalauokalanl shouted, "Let them go if they want to, we do not neekl them anyhow. Let us stick together.
